A pixelated stream can be caused by the viewer’s playback settings or connection, the video source, encoder performance, or an unstable upload connection. Find where the picture first turns blurry before changing settings: compare the encoder preview and a local recording with what viewers see, then work through the checks below.
First, find where the picture gets blurry
Compare what you see in the encoder preview or a local recording with reports from viewers. This separates a problem in the video being sent from one that occurs during delivery or playback. YouTube advises that a problem affecting one viewer is probably on that viewer’s device or internet connection; reports from viewers on different connections may point to the encoder. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend checking CPU load and the quality of sources routed to the encoder.

- Preview or recording is blurry: inspect the camera or other source, encoder settings, and computer performance.
- Preview and recording look clean, but some viewers see blur: have those viewers check playback quality, device, and connection.
- Many viewers on separate connections see blur or interruptions: check stream health, dropped frames, and whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate.
Check the viewer’s YouTube playback quality
YouTube adjusts playback quality to viewing conditions, including connection speed, player size, the quality of the original video, and browser support. A viewer can also choose an available quality manually. Ask them to open the player’s Settings → Quality and select a higher available resolution. Then compare on another device or network if the picture remains blurry. Higher playback quality uses more data and may take longer to start or buffer more. It cannot make a stream sharper than the source you sent. YouTube explains playback quality settings here.

| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | H.264 minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
YouTube’s recommended figures differ for AV1/H.265: 1080p30 is 10 Mbps, 1080p60 is 12 Mbps, and 720p30 or 720p60 is 6 Mbps. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for its full guidance before changing a live setup. The appropriate setting depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, available hardware, and what the connection can sustain.
Leave upload headroom
Test upload speed, not only download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused, and notes that other people or devices sharing the network can reduce what is available to the stream even when a speed test looks fast. If using primary and backup encoders, budget for both plus that 20% headroom. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.

- Run an upload speed test under the network conditions you expect during the stream.
- Compare stable upload capacity with the total configured stream bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% unused.
- If the connection cannot sustain the bitrate, lower bitrate or output resolution and rehearse before the event.
- Monitor stream health during a private or unlisted test that includes audio and movement similar to the real stream.
Check for dropped frames and network instability
In OBS, dropped frames indicate that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS recommends lowering bitrate based on stable upload speed and using a wired connection when streaming over Wi-Fi. Try Ethernet as a diagnostic if Wi-Fi instability is suspected; it will not fix a blurry camera source, unsuitable encoder settings, or viewer-side playback limits. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide is dated September 30, 2024.

- Pause other heavy uploads or downloads on the shared network and test again.
- Try a wired connection to isolate Wi-Fi issues.
- Lower bitrate if dropped frames persist, then verify stream health in a rehearsal.
- If using a cable, router, or network adapter that may be faulty, test with a known-working replacement rather than assuming bitrate is the only cause.
Inspect the source, encoder, and rendering load
If the preview or local recording is already degraded, changing YouTube playback quality will not repair it. Check that the camera or other video source is producing a sharp image and that the encoder is not reporting errors. OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes; GPU overload or complex scenes can cause choppy or laggy output. Its guide recommends freeing GPU capacity, limiting a game’s frame rate, reducing output settings, or simplifying scenes before considering a computer upgrade. OBS’s encoding performance guide is dated June 12, 2021.

Use a deliberate YouTube encoder test
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder instructions support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommend constant bitrate (CBR), and recommend a two-second keyframe interval, not more than four seconds. Exact compatible choices depend on the encoder and hardware. Test with movement and audio representative of the actual stream, then watch stream health and dashboard messages. Consult YouTube’s encoder setup page for current instructions.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Only one viewer reports blur | That viewer’s device, network, or selected playback quality | Raise playback quality in Settings → Quality if available; compare another network or device. |
| Preview or local recording is already soft or pixelated | Video source, encoder, or rendering performance | Check source clarity, encoder errors, CPU/GPU load, and scene complexity. |
| Many viewers on different connections report poor quality | Encoder output, source, or stream health | Check source quality and dashboard messages; test with representative movement and audio. |
| OBS reports dropped frames | Unstable connection or bitrate beyond sustainable upload | Measure upload, leave headroom, lower bitrate if necessary, and test Ethernet if on Wi-Fi. |
| Picture buffers after a viewer selects higher quality | Viewer bandwidth or device playback capacity | Try a lower available playback quality or a more capable network/device. |
