Warm air while it is set to Cool is a different problem: on a heat pump, Google lists an incorrectly selected O/B orientation as one possible cause. Start by checking whether the thermostat is actually calling for heat, then use the mode and equipment type to narrow the issue.
First, identify what the thermostat is doing
“Heating in Off” and “blowing warm air in Cool” are not the same symptom. In Off mode, Nest disables ordinary heating and cooling schedules but retains Safety Temperature protection. In Cool mode, warm air may point to a heat-pump configuration issue, among other possibilities.

Look at the thermostat’s displayed mode and whether it shows a heat call. If it is actively calling for heat, check settings first. If it is not calling but the equipment continues to heat, settings alone do not explain the behavior; an HVAC professional should diagnose the system.

Five checks that can explain unexpected heating
1. Heat Safety Temperature is triggering in Off mode
Off does not disconnect power to the thermostat or HVAC equipment. Nest retains Safety Temperatures in Off mode, and the heating Safety Temperature is on by default to help prevent freezing. If the indoor temperature reaches the configured threshold, the thermostat can call for heat even though its mode is Off. See Google’s explanation of Nest thermostat Off mode and Safety Temperatures.

- ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat for home that helps you save energy and stay comfortable.Product note: You can also check your system’s compatibility before purchasing a Nest thermostat with our online Nest Compatibility Checker on the Google Nest support page.Connectivity Protocol : Wi-Fi.Connectivity Protocol : Wi-Fi
- The Nest Thermostat is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, but for some systems, including heating only, cooling only, zone controlled, and heat pump systems, you’ll need a C wire or other compatible power accessory. Lock feature: No
- Nest Thermostat turns itself down when you leave, so you don’t waste energy heating or cooling an empty home; easily program an energy efficient schedule in the Google home app on your Android or iPhone
- Remote control lets family members change the thermostat temperature from anywhere on a phone, laptop, or tablet[1]
- Savings Finder looks for more ways your thermostat can help you save, and suggests tweaks to your schedule in the app; check with your energy provider to learn more about rebates and more ways to save on a Nest thermostat
To prevent this kind of call, Safety Temperatures can be turned off, but that removes protection against dangerous temperature extremes and possible property damage. Consider the risk to the home before changing the setting.
2. Eco or presence behavior changed the active setting
Eco can maintain a heating setpoint, and presence-based Away behavior can switch a thermostat to Eco when nobody is home. When someone returns or motion is detected, the thermostat may resume heating or cooling. Check the current mode and Eco settings in the app used by your thermostat. Eco Heat set to Off does not disable Safety Temperature protection. Google describes these behaviors in its Eco Temperatures and presence settings guidance.

Ordinary schedules do not override Off mode: Google says they are disabled when the thermostat is Off. If the display says Off but the thermostat appears to be heating, check whether Safety Temperature protection is active before attributing the call to a schedule.
3. A heat pump’s O/B orientation may be wrong in Cool mode
If your system is a heat pump and it blows warm air while Nest is set to Cool, Google identifies an incorrectly configured heat-pump O/B orientation as a possible cause. O/B controls the reversing valve that switches a heat pump between heating and cooling. The correction is to change the selected O/B setting according to the instructions for your exact Nest model; the app or device steps vary by generation. Follow Google’s model-specific reversed heating and cooling troubleshooting.

This is a heat-pump check, not a universal fix for every heating system. Confirm the equipment type before changing the setting, and do not move wires based only on their colors or a generic diagram.
4. Auxiliary heat is operating on a heat pump
Some heat pumps use auxiliary (AUX) heat as backup. Google says AUX heat can turn on when it is very cold outside or when the heat pump needs to defrost. Heat Pump Balance affects AUX use on compatible systems; it does not mean that AUX heat should run in Cool mode. Google explains the feature in its Heat Pump Balance guidance.

- Beautiful design: With a 60% larger display[11] and Dynamic Farsight, you can see info from across the room[1]; choose the design, like a clock or the weather; it automatically adjusts brightness for the best readability or you can adjust manually
Emergency Heat is different: it is a separate feature that must be turned on manually. If you see Emergency Heat selected unexpectedly, check the mode and consult Google’s Emergency Heat guidance for your system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. A wiring or equipment fault needs professional diagnosis
If Nest is not calling for heat but the HVAC system keeps heating, the official troubleshooting guidance does not identify one specific failed part as the explanation. Wiring, thermostat configuration, and equipment issues require diagnosis rather than an assumed fix or a thermostat replacement. Google provides Nest thermostat help-code troubleshooting and guidance for undetected or unconfigured wires. For uncertain wiring or continued heating without a thermostat call, contact a qualified HVAC professional.

Use the symptom to choose the next step
| What you see | Likely check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Mode is Off and Nest shows a heat call | Heat Safety Temperature threshold | Review the Safety Temperature setting and the indoor temperature. |
| Mode is Eco or changes when people leave or return | Eco setpoint and presence behavior | Check the active mode and Eco settings in the relevant app. |
| Mode is Cool, warm air comes from a heat pump | O/B orientation | Confirm the system is a heat pump and follow the instructions for your Nest generation. |
| Heat pump uses backup heat in cold weather or during defrost | AUX heat and Heat Pump Balance | Review the compatible system’s balance settings; distinguish AUX from Emergency Heat. |
| HVAC heats while Nest is not calling for heat | Wiring or equipment fault | Arrange qualified HVAC diagnosis rather than guessing at a component. |
Check the instructions for your Nest generation
Settings and steps differ by model. Google’s current guidance uses Google Home app paths for the Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) for some settings. Nest Thermostat E and earlier Nest Learning Thermostats may use different device paths or the Nest app. Confirm your thermostat model before following tap-by-tap instructions in the relevant Google support article.
