For smooth PS5 gameplay, choose a monitor that is confirmed to accept the resolution and refresh rate you want over its HDMI connection—not one whose headline refresh-rate number simply looks high. The PS5 supports up to 120Hz for games, including 4K at 120Hz when the game, monitor, settings, and connection all support it. Here are five options grouped by use: premium 4K image quality, a premium alternative, a mid-range 4K all-rounder, a value-oriented 4K screen, and a budget 1440p choice.
What to check before choosing a PS5 120Hz monitor
A monitor advertised at 144Hz or 240Hz does not make the PS5 output at that rate. The console’s maximum for games is 120Hz; higher monitor refresh ceilings mainly benefit PC users. More importantly, the monitor must accept the PS5’s signal at the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.

- For 4K at 120Hz: Look for HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and confirm compatibility for the exact monitor model and HDMI input. Sony documents PS5 output up to 4K at 120Hz over HDMI 2.1, subject to display and game support. Sony’s 4K resolution guidance also advises checking the display port, firmware, settings, and cable if the mode does not appear.
- For 1440p at 120Hz: PS5 supports 1440p output, but not every monitor’s HDMI input accepts the desired signal. Use Sony’s built-in test rather than assuming a PC specification guarantees compatibility.
- For VRR: Check that the monitor supports VRR over HDMI and that PS5 compatibility is confirmed. Sony notes that results vary by display and game.
- For image quality: Compare contrast, brightness, HDR capability, motion handling, input lag, screen size, and desk fit. A fast refresh label alone does not establish how a monitor performs in these areas.
A 4K HDMI 2.1 monitor is the more straightforward route to 4K 120Hz. A compatible 1440p monitor can be a lower-cost way to get 120Hz, provided its PS5 signal support is verified.
Five 120Hz monitor picks for PS5
The models below appear in RTINGS’ PS5 and PS5 Pro buying guide, updated September 2, 2026. The categories and order here are practical distinctions, not a universal ranking: value, availability, and exact model specifications vary by region and can change.
#1 Best Overall

1. ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM: premium 4K image quality
RTINGS lists this 27-inch 4K QD-OLED with HDMI 2.1 and PS5 4K 120Hz support. Its maximum refresh rate is 240Hz, but that ceiling does not raise the PS5’s 120Hz limit. It is the premium choice for someone prioritizing a 4K OLED picture and who also wants a high-refresh display for a PC. Check the exact regional model and current availability before buying. RTINGS’ PS5 monitor guide
2. Dell Alienware AW2725Q: premium 4K QD-OLED alternative
RTINGS describes this as a premium alternative with similar picture quality to the ASUS and HDMI 2.1 bandwidth for PS5 and PS5 Pro. Compare local price, warranty, and exact input specifications against the ASUS rather than assuming the two are identical in every detail. RTINGS’ PS5 monitor guide

3. Acer Nitro XV275K P5biipruzx: mid-range 4K all-rounder
RTINGS reports 4K resolution, HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, and support for PS5 signal modes. It highlights higher brightness as an advantage in bright rooms, while noting weaker dark-room contrast than OLED. This makes it a sensible category to consider if room brightness matters more than OLED-level dark-scene performance. Confirm the model suffix and regional availability before purchase. RTINGS’ PS5 monitor guide
4. Dell S2725QS: value-oriented 4K 120Hz option
In its PS5 Pro discussion, RTINGS identifies this as a budget-leaning 4K option with HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz. It also notes weaker motion handling and HDR limitations, so it should not be treated as a gaming-performance leader simply because it offers 4K at 120Hz. Check the price and exact input capabilities for your region. RTINGS’ PS5 monitor guide

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
5. KOORUI S2721PM: budget 1440p 120Hz choice
RTINGS reports that this 1440p monitor supports PS5 120Hz and VRR, but lacks the HDMI 2.1 bandwidth needed for 4K 120Hz. It fits buyers who are willing to choose 1440p rather than pay for a 4K HDMI 2.1 setup. Before ordering, verify that the listing is for the precise model and that its HDMI input supports the PS5 modes you need. RTINGS’ PS5 monitor guide
Can PS5 run 120Hz on a 1440p monitor?
Yes, if the monitor accepts a 1440p 120Hz signal from PS5 and the game supports 120Hz. Sony provides a 1440p output test that checks SDR and HDR at 60Hz and 120Hz, as well as VRR when the display supports those modes. This is the most useful compatibility check for a 1440p screen: a monitor’s PC refresh-rate specification alone does not prove its PS5 HDMI input will accept 1440p at 120Hz.

Do you need HDMI 2.1 for 120Hz on PS5?
No—not for every 120Hz setup. HDMI 2.1 bandwidth is the straightforward requirement for 4K at 120Hz, but compatible monitors can support PS5 at 1440p 120Hz without the bandwidth needed for 4K 120Hz. Choose based on the resolution you actually want, then verify that the specific monitor input is tested or confirmed for that PS5 signal. VRR is a separate compatibility question: confirm HDMI VRR support for both the monitor and the games you play.

- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, then enable 120Hz Output. Game support and in-game settings also affect whether a title runs at 120Hz.
- For a 1440p monitor, choose Test 1440p Output in the video output settings. Review whether the display passes the desired 60Hz or 120Hz SDR/HDR modes and VRR, if applicable.
- If 4K 120Hz is unavailable, confirm you are using the monitor’s correct HDMI port, install any relevant monitor firmware update, review the monitor and console video settings, and check the cable. Sony recommends the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120Hz.
- If a game presents video-output problems, Sony’s support guidance says to turn off 120Hz Output for that situation. See Sony’s PS5 4K and 120Hz troubleshooting guidance.
Which type should you choose?
- Choose 4K HDMI 2.1 if your priority is the clearest path to 4K 120Hz.
- Choose 1440p if a lower-cost monitor is more important and you have confirmed PS5 1440p 120Hz compatibility.
- Choose OLED if dark-scene contrast and premium image quality are priorities; consider a brighter LCD option for a bright room.
- Do not pay extra for a PC refresh ceiling alone. A 144Hz or 240Hz monitor can be useful with a PC, but PS5 games top out at 120Hz output.
