An ad blocker can reduce intrusive ads and some tracking, but its effects depend on the tool and its settings. Before installing one, weigh four practical tradeoffs: stronger blocking can disrupt site features, ad-funded sites may lose a source of support, counterfeit extensions can be dangerous, and privacy or effectiveness claims vary by product.
1. Can an ad blocker break websites or make features stop working?
It can, particularly when blocking is aggressive. Ad blockers suppress or modify page elements and network requests; if a site depends on a blocked request for a feature, that feature may not work as intended.

Brave’s published policy illustrates the distinction between blocking modes: its standard mode does not network-filter first-party requests by default, while its aggressive mode blocks both first-party and third-party requests. Brave says blocking first-party advertising or tracking scripts raises the risk of website breakage. That is Brave’s account of its own browser, not a rule that applies to every blocker. Brave’s blocking policy was edited June 16, 2026.

If a trusted site stops working, try allowing ads or changing the blocker setting for that site rather than disabling protection everywhere. In Chrome, open the site, select the site information icon beside the address, then open Site settings and adjust the ads setting. Google says Chrome removes ads from websites that violate the Better Ads Standards, including experiences such as excessive ads, flashing graphics, autoplaying audio, or ad walls before content. Chrome’s built-in intervention is distinct from the behavior of a third-party extension. Google Chrome Help explains how to visit a site by turning off Chrome’s ad blocker.

2. Does installing an ad blocker affect websites that rely on advertising?
It may prevent some ads from displaying, which can remove one source of support for a publisher. The scale of any effect on a particular site is not established by the available figures, so it would be misleading to infer that one installation will cause a publisher to fail.
Some sites offer a choice: Google AdSense documents recovery messages that can ask visitors to allow ads or support the site another way, such as through a subscription. Pinterest’s 2025 quarterly filing for the period ended June 30, 2025, said substantially all of the company’s revenue came from advertising and identified ad-blocking technology as a risk because it can prevent some ads from displaying. That is Pinterest’s company-specific disclosure, not a measure of the effect on all websites. Google AdSense describes ad blocking recovery messages; Pinterest’s filing sets out its revenue disclosure.
You can decide that an ad is too intrusive to accept while also considering whether a site offers a workable alternative, such as a paid subscription. The choice is yours; the important point is that advertising can be part of how some sites fund their content and services.
3. Can an ad-blocking extension itself be unsafe?
A counterfeit or untrusted extension can be. AdBlock’s help center warns that fake extensions imitating its name have been used to spread adware or malware. That warning concerns impersonators; it does not establish that legitimate ad blockers as a category are malicious. AdBlock’s help center explains the counterfeit-extension concern.
Before installing an extension:
- Check the developer name and the extension’s listing in your browser’s official extension store.
- Confirm the listing through the developer’s official website when possible.
- Avoid lookalike search ads and third-party download sites that may distribute a different or modified extension.
4. Are all ad blockers equally effective, and have browser-extension changes made them ineffective?
No single label tells you exactly what a blocker does. Blocking rules, supported browsers, settings, and treatment of first-party requests can differ. Check the tool’s documented behavior and site-specific controls instead of assuming every product blocks the same things.

Browser extension changes have also prompted claims that ad blockers became ineffective, but a 2026 study offers a more limited finding. Karlo Lukic and Lazaros Papadopoulos compared Manifest V3 (MV3) and Manifest V2 (MV2) versions of four widely used blockers across ad-supported websites. In that study, the tested MV3 blockers showed no statistically significant reduction in ad-blocking effectiveness compared with their MV2 counterparts; the MV3 group blocked about 1.8 more trackers per website on average. These results apply to the tested blockers, sites, and experimental setup—not every extension, browser version, or future update. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does an ad blocker also stop tracking and protect privacy?
It can block some tracking, but the level of protection depends on the blocker and its settings. Brave, for example, says its default settings block third-party advertising and associated tracking; its stronger mode can also affect first-party requests. This describes Brave’s implementation, not a universal promise made by all ad blockers. A blocking tool should not be treated as a guarantee that all tracking stops.
