Why Is RAM Getting More Expensive, and What Can You Do About It?

Server demand is tightening DRAM supply, but contract-price forecasts are not retail guarantees. Here’s how to decide whether to buy compatible RAM now or wait.

RAM prices are under pressure because memory supply is tight while demand from server and AI-related markets is strong. Suppliers are prioritizing advanced production capacity for high-performance server memory, leaving less flexibility to serve other buyers. TrendForce’s latest outlook, published September 30, 2026, forecast another rise in conventional DRAM contract prices in the fourth quarter—but that is an upstream forecast, not a guarantee that a particular retail kit will cost more by a specific amount. If you need an upgrade, buy for a real workload and verify compatibility; if it is optional, waiting is reasonable, but no source here establishes when retail prices will fall.

Why are RAM prices rising?

Server demand is competing for constrained capacity

DRAM makers have limited production flexibility, and suppliers are directing advanced-process capacity toward high-performance server products. TrendForce said on September 30, 2026, that this prioritization was keeping the overall market undersupplied. It also reported that improving server CPU availability led cloud service providers and server manufacturers to increase memory procurement, adding pressure on supply.

The constraints extend beyond wafer production: TrendForce also identified packaging and testing capacity as factors limiting how quickly supply can meet demand. Earlier in 2026, the firm described capacity being shifted toward server and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) products amid AI-server demand, limiting availability for other markets.

PC buyers feel the effects, even though they are not the only source of demand

PC memory is affected by where suppliers allocate capacity. TrendForce said PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027 as more capacity shifts to server applications. It also reported that PC makers continued procuring memory because they expected supply to remain tight, while higher component costs weighed on notebook inventories and end-market sales.

This does not mean every consumer is buying more RAM. TrendForce’s July and September 2026 outlooks described affordability limits, cautious consumer demand, and pressure on sales. Those factors may restrain how quickly prices rise, even while supply remains constrained.

What do the latest price forecasts actually say?

TrendForce’s figures are forecasts for conventional DRAM contract prices, not measurements of retail prices for consumer kits. The outlook changed over the year:

Outlook date Forecast period Forecast change How to interpret it
January 5, 2026 1Q26 55–60% quarter over quarter TrendForce’s forecast at that time; historical context, not the latest outlook.
July 3, 2026 3Q26 13–18% quarter over quarter TrendForce’s forecast at that time, with weaker consumer demand and a high base moderating expected gains.
September 30, 2026 4Q26 10–15% quarter over quarter TrendForce’s latest retrieved forecast for conventional DRAM contract prices; it projected further increases at a slower pace.

These percentages should not be applied directly to a kit’s shelf price. Retail prices vary by country, seller, capacity, brand, configuration, and stock, and the cited outlooks do not provide a country-level retail price series or a forecast for any particular product.

Could shortages last beyond 2026?

There is reason to treat tight supply as a longer-term risk, but not as a certainty about what a consumer will pay. Tom’s Hardware reported on October 2, 2026, that Micron CEO and chairperson Sanjay Mehrotra expected demand to exceed supply in calendar years 2027 and 2028, with tighter conditions than in 2026. He also said Micron did not have line of sight to when supply and demand would return to balance. This is an executive’s company outlook from an earnings call, not a guaranteed industry outcome or a timetable for retail prices.

Should you buy RAM now or wait?

Make the decision around the computer and work you actually have, rather than trying to time the market. A forecast for rising contract prices does not show whether a compatible kit in your local market is currently good value.

Option It makes sense when What to check
Buy a compatible kit now Your current memory is limiting a real task, and an upgrade is a practical fix. Supported generation, form factor, capacity, configuration, maker guidance, and the full local price.
Delay the upgrade The upgrade is optional and current prices do not suit your budget. Whether your workload remains usable; no cited source establishes when retail prices will decline.
Replace the computer instead The machine is near the end of its useful life or memory is not the only limiting component. Total replacement cost and expected useful life compared with upgrading the existing system.

How to check whether a RAM upgrade will work

  1. Identify the bottleneck. Note which task is slow or constrained and whether memory use is the cause. Do not buy extra RAM simply because market prices may rise.
  2. Check the memory generation. Confirm the exact DDR generation supported by your computer or motherboard. The label “DDR5” alone does not establish compatibility.
  3. Check form factor and capacity. Desktops commonly use DIMMs and many laptops use SO-DIMMs, but confirm the system maker’s specification. Check supported total capacity and any per-slot limits.
  4. Follow the device maker’s requirements. Consult the computer or motherboard manual and its supported memory guidance before choosing a kit; do not assume that a physically similar module will work.
  5. Compare equivalent kits locally. Compare the same generation, form factor, total capacity, and configuration, and check the complete price at purchase time. No particular seller, kit, stock level, or current retail price has been verified here.

What could change the outlook?

The price path depends on the balance between memory demand and available production, including how much capacity suppliers allocate to server products and how effectively production and packaging constraints ease. Consumer affordability also matters: weaker buying can temper demand even when supply is tight. TrendForce’s September 2026 release summarized the near-term supply issue this way: “DRAM suppliers continue to prioritize advanced-process capacity for high-performance server products in 4Q26, keeping the overall market undersupplied.” Neither that statement nor the forecasts identify a date when retail prices will fall.
