A black screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The quickest way to find the cause is to check where the picture first disappears: in your encoder, in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, on the public watch page, or only on one viewer’s device. Each points to a different part of the streaming chain.
Find where the picture first goes black
Check the same stream at each point in its path: the video source or scene, the encoder’s output, YouTube’s preview, and the viewer-facing watch page. Note whether the problem affects one viewer or people on different devices and networks. These comparisons narrow the possibilities, but none proves a cause on its own.

| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The encoder picture is black | The selected video source or scene, routing into the encoder, and encoder health. |
| The encoder looks right, but Live Control Room is black or has no preview | Stream delivery, encoder status, and YouTube’s stream setup and preview. |
| The preview looks right, but the public stream is black | The watch page, stream status, content notices in Studio, and whether the issue affects multiple viewers. |
| Only one viewer sees black | That viewer’s browser or app, device, and connection. |
If the encoder output is black
If the image is already missing before it reaches YouTube, start with the source path rather than buying replacement equipment. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance suggests checking whether the correct audio or video sources are routed to the encoder, looking for encoder errors and high CPU load, and inspecting a local recording if one is being made.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open the encoder’s preview or output monitor. Confirm that the intended video is visible there, not just in a separate player window.
- Check that the scene or source containing the relaxation video is selected, enabled, and routed to the stream output. If you use multiple scenes or sources, make sure the live scene is the one with the video.
- Look at the encoder’s live dashboard for errors and check whether CPU load is unusually high. If you are recording locally at the same time, inspect that file to see whether it contains the picture.
- Update the encoder software and test again. If the source routing, software, and encoder status appear healthy but the output remains black, YouTube suggests trying another encoder as a diagnostic step.
These checks help locate the fault; they do not establish that a particular computer, cable, capture device, or other piece of hardware is defective.

If the encoder looks right but YouTube’s preview is black
A healthy encoder image shifts attention to the connection, stream delivery, and YouTube’s stream status. YouTube’s setup guidance says to wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room before going live. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder for its setup instructions.
- In Live Control Room, check whether the stream is being received and whether the preview appears. If the intended picture never appears there, do not assume viewers will receive it correctly.
- Check the encoder’s stream status and errors, then inspect the public watch page from a separate device or browser.
- Test your outbound internet speed and reliability. YouTube recommends leaving upload-bandwidth headroom: the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth, with 20% room recommended. This is general guidance, not a statistic about how often black screens occur. Details are in YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Compare reports from viewers on different devices and independent internet connections. If several viewers see the same problem, investigate stream delivery and the encoder; if only one does, check that viewer’s playback setup. Either pattern is a clue, not proof.
Check YouTube Studio for content notices
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its copyright guidance for live streams says that when third-party content is identified, a placeholder image may replace the stream; a stream that continues to include that content may be interrupted or terminated. If your relaxation stream uses music or visuals you did not create, check Studio for notices and make sure you have the relevant rights and permissions.

These viewer-side checks are less likely to explain a black picture already visible in the creator’s encoder or Live Control Room preview.
Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| Black in the encoder and on YouTube | Verify the active scene and source routing; review encoder errors, CPU load, and any local archive. |
| Correct in the encoder, missing in preview | Check the encoder’s stream status and connection, then wait for Live Control Room’s preview before going live. |
| Correct in preview, black on the watch page | Check Studio for content notices and compare the watch page on another device or network. |
| One viewer reports black; others do not | Have the affected viewer reopen playback, try another supported device or browser, and test another network. |
| Multiple viewers on different connections report black | Use the encoder dashboard and YouTube’s stream status to investigate delivery and encoder issues; the reports are a clue, not a definitive diagnosis. |
