Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can run Playwright screenshot tests in GitHub Actions without paying for runner time when the repository is public and you use a standard GitHub-hosted runner. For a private repository, “free” depends on your account’s included minutes and storage; usage beyond those allowances can be billed. The setup below runs tests on pushes and pull requests, then saves the Playwright report as a workflow artifact so you can inspect failures.
What “free” means for GitHub Actions
GitHub-hosted standard runner usage is free for public repositories. Private repositories use minutes and storage included with the account’s plan, and excess usage is billed. Self-hosted runners do not incur GitHub Actions minute charges, but you provide and operate the machine. Before relying on a no-cost workflow, check the repository’s visibility, runner type, account allowance, actual minutes and artifact storage in GitHub’s Actions billing documentation and account billing settings.
Prepare the Playwright test suite
The workflow runs tests; it does not create a visual assertion by itself. Add Playwright to the JavaScript project and write screenshot assertions in its test suite. Configure Playwright to produce a report in playwright-report/ if you want that folder uploaded. Use the same browser and operating-system environment when generating or updating screenshot baselines and when checking them in CI. Playwright’s CI documentation describes containers as one way to isolate dependencies and keep screenshot or visual-regression environments consistent; it also documents using a single worker in CI when stability is a concern.
Add a GitHub Actions workflow
Create .github/workflows/playwright.yml in the repository. This JavaScript example follows the Playwright guide’s GitHub Actions configuration: it checks out the code, sets up Node, installs locked dependencies and browser/system dependencies, runs tests, and uploads the report even when a test fails, unless the workflow is cancelled.

This assumes Playwright is already declared in the project dependencies, package-lock.json is committed for npm ci, and tests/reporting are configured as expected. The action versions and 30-day retention period are those shown in Playwright’s example configuration, not a universal or permanent GitHub retention rule. Check the current Playwright CI guide when adopting or updating the workflow; replace main if your target branch differs.
Inspect the report after a run
- Push a commit or open/update a pull request targeting the configured branch.
- Open the repository’s Actions tab and select the workflow run.
- When the job finishes, download the
playwright-reportartifact from the run’s artifacts section. - Open the downloaded report locally to review failed tests and their diagnostics. If the artifact is missing, check that the report folder was generated and that the job was not cancelled.
Keep screenshot results dependable
- Control the environment: browser version, operating system, fonts, viewport and device scale can affect rendered pixels. Keep baseline generation and CI as alike as practical.
- Install the browser in CI:
npx playwright install --with-depsinstalls the required browser and operating-system dependencies on the runner. - Reduce concurrency if needed: a single worker can help with CI stability, though it can make the suite take longer.
- Use a container when consistency matters: Playwright documents containers as an option for isolating dependencies; select a compatible Playwright image and keep its browser version aligned with the project.
Estimate whether the workflow will cost anything
There is no single free-minute figure that applies to every private repository. Cost depends on the repository’s public or private visibility, whether it uses a standard GitHub-hosted or self-hosted runner, the account’s included allowance, the minutes consumed and artifact/storage use. A self-hosted machine avoids GitHub Actions minute charges but still has operating costs borne by you. For private repositories, verify the current plan allowance and overage terms in GitHub billing rather than assuming the workflow is free.

Troubleshoot common failures
npm cifails: ensure the repository includes a lockfile consistent withpackage.jsonand that the workflow runs from the project directory.- Browser executable or dependency errors: confirm the install step runs before tests and use
npx playwright install --with-depson the Linux runner. - Screenshot differs only in CI: compare browser and OS versions, fonts, viewport, device scale and other rendering inputs with the environment used to create the baseline. A container can reduce dependency differences.
- Report artifact is absent: verify tests are configured to create
playwright-report/, that the artifact path matches the output directory, and that the job was not cancelled. - Private workflow incurs charges: check the account’s included minutes and storage, actual run consumption and artifact retention; reduce unnecessary runs or storage use, or use a self-hosted runner if operating one makes sense.

If you need a clean page capture rather than an in-repository visual-regression suite, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the example below saves a WebP screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each of those steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot, page-info and PDF-capture tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
