If previews are enabled, inspect the exact page’s initial HTML for an absolute og:image URL and confirm WhatsApp’s crawler can fetch that image. Then paste the page URL into a WhatsApp composer and wait for the card to load. Preview generation is best effort, so even valid metadata cannot guarantee a preview.
1. Check the sender’s WhatsApp privacy setting
WhatsApp has a sender-side setting that suppresses previews on links that person sends. Check Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Disable link previews. If it is enabled, turn it off and try the link again. WhatsApp says the setting is off by default and is an optional privacy measure related to protecting the sender’s IP address. It applies to previews on links the sender sends; WhatsApp says receiving previews does not affect the receiver’s IP address. WhatsApp Help Center

If the same sender gets no preview for multiple unrelated links, this setting is a useful first check. If other links show cards but one page does not, continue with that page’s HTML and image.

2. Inspect the exact page’s initial HTML
For a site you control, inspect the raw response or page source for the exact URL being shared. The initial HTML head should include nonempty Open Graph values for the page title, description, canonical URL and image. The og:image value should be an absolute URL, including the scheme and hostname.

Why “it looks right in my browser” is not enough
A browser can run JavaScript that inserts metadata after the initial page response. That does not show that a crawler receives those tags in the original HTML. Check the returned source itself, not only the browser’s final DOM. Also verify that the tags belong to the precise URL you sent; a different route, redirect destination or canonical page may have different metadata.

3. Verify the image URL and file
Open the exact URL in og:image in a private browser window or another context without your site’s login. It should return the intended image directly, without an expired signed link, authentication requirement, hotlink restriction, firewall block or other access barrier. A browser screenshot of the page does not establish that the separate image URL is publicly fetchable.

- Use an absolute image URL, not a relative path such as
/images/share.jpg. - Check the downloaded image file itself. The WhatsApp developer guidance reproduced by ChatArchitect specifies a file smaller than 600 KB, at least 300 pixels wide, and a width-to-height ratio no greater than 4:1.
- Confirm the URL still works after publishing and does not redirect to a login, error page or different asset.
A separate third-party troubleshooting guide also flags relative or inaccessible image URLs and unsuitable image dimensions as possible causes; its additional format advice should not be read as a WhatsApp guarantee. Social Champ’s guide

4. Retest the published URL in WhatsApp
- Publish the metadata and image-access changes.
- Copy the exact HTTPS page URL you intend to share.
- Paste it into a WhatsApp message composer and wait for the preview to appear before sending.
- Check that the card shows the expected image, title, description and destination.
This is a practical check, not a promise that all recipients will see the same card. The reproduced developer guidance describes previews as best effort and says requirements may be relaxed or a smaller preview may be used; it does not guarantee previews will work or continue working.
If WhatsApp keeps showing an old or image-less card
Fix and verify the page response and image first. The documentation consulted does not specify a cache lifetime or provide a guaranteed cache-reset control. Adding a query string to the URL is mentioned as an unofficial workaround in third-party advice, but it is not an established or dependable WhatsApp refresh method. Do not promise that changing the URL will update every user’s card.

5. If you do not own the website
You cannot repair another site’s Open Graph tags or image hosting from your WhatsApp account. Send the site owner or maintainer the exact URL and describe what is missing. They can check the page’s initial HTML and whether its image is publicly retrievable.
