How to Play Local Video Files on a YouTube Live Stream

A local video reaches YouTube Live through an encoder. Learn how to connect it, choose stream settings, check rights, preview the feed, and fix common problems.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play a local video file on YouTube Live, add it to an encoder’s outgoing program, connect the encoder to a YouTube stream with the stream URL and key, check the preview, and start the encoder. YouTube receives the encoder’s feed; it does not play a file from your computer by itself. The exact steps for adding and looping a file depend on the encoder you choose.

Before you start

  • Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or open the event you intend to use.
  • Choose an encoder that can put a local video file into its outgoing program and send that program to YouTube.
  • Confirm that you have the rights needed to livestream the video and its audio, and to leave an archive available if one is created.

YouTube’s encoder workflow supports computer-produced video and advanced productions. Its connection and preview process is documented in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

How to stream a local video file

  1. Prepare the file in your encoder. Add the local video as a media or video source, then place it in the scene or program that will be sent to YouTube. Check that the intended file is selected, that its audio is routed to the stream, and what happens at the end of playback. Depending on the encoder, playback may stop or the file may be able to loop. Consult that encoder’s current documentation for its exact controls; they are not universal.
  2. Get the YouTube connection details. In the event’s Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not share it or show it on screen.
  3. Connect the encoder. Either select the encoder’s YouTube integration or enter YouTube’s stream URL in its server/service field and the key in its stream-key field. Use a fresh key if you believe the existing one has been exposed.
  4. Set the output and protocol. YouTube generally recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP. Select a supported video codec—H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1—and AAC or MP3 audio when sending RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s encoder guidance allows up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use constant bitrate encoding and choose a bitrate suited to your resolution, frame rate, codec, and stable upload capacity. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for resolution-specific recommendations.
  5. Test and inspect the preview. Start sending the encoder feed before making the event public, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Test with audio and motion similar to the real program. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Check the event from the channel or watch page as appropriate, and verify both picture and sound.
  6. Start and end the broadcast deliberately. Once the preview is correct, start the event as intended in YouTube Studio. When finished, stop the encoder and confirm in Studio that the event has ended. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the current guidance before relying on an archive for a longer stream.

Choose settings that fit your connection

There is no single safe bitrate for every file. A higher resolution or frame rate generally needs more upload capacity, and the encoder must send a stable feed—not merely match the video’s file bitrate. Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific table, then make sure your available upload bandwidth can sustain the chosen setting with the recommended headroom. If the connection fluctuates, lower the output setting rather than risking dropped frames or interruptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ordinary RTMPS delivery, keep the recommended two-second keyframe interval and do not exceed four seconds. Use constant bitrate encoding, a supported video codec, and AAC or MP3 audio. The source file’s settings do not automatically determine the encoder’s outgoing settings: confirm what the encoder is actually sending in its status display and YouTube’s stream-health feedback.

RTMPS or HLS?

RTMPS is YouTube’s general recommendation for encoder streams. HLS is an alternative for compatible encoders and specialized needs, including certain HDR or codec workflows, but it is not a drop-in choice for every setup. HLS sends video in segments, which results in higher latency than continuous RTMP-style delivery. YouTube’s HLS setup requirements include TS segments of 1–4 seconds, rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. Use HLS only if the encoder supports YouTube’s requirements and the workflow calls for it; see YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Copyright and livestream rights

Having a video file on your computer does not grant permission to retransmit it. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” That responsibility applies to the live content and any archive. Check the licenses that apply to the video, music, film, sports, or other third-party material in your particular stream; possession of a recording alone is not enough to establish those rights.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is using the correct stream URL and key, that the event is open in Live Control Room, and that your network permits the encoder’s connection. Re-enter the key privately if you suspect a typo or exposure.
  • The preview is black or shows the wrong content: Confirm the local file is loaded and selected in the outgoing scene or program. Check the encoder’s preview and make sure the media source is visible and playing.
  • The picture works but there is no sound: Check the file’s audio track, the encoder’s source/audio routing, and the outgoing audio meter. Then confirm audio in YouTube’s preview before going live.
  • Playback stops at the end: The encoder may not loop media by default. Set its media source to loop if that is the intended behavior, using the encoder’s own documentation, or prepare a playlist supported by that encoder.
  • The stream is unstable or reports health warnings: Compare the encoder’s selected bitrate with your sustained upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed. Test again with representative motion and sound.
  • There is more delay than expected: HLS has higher latency because it delivers segmented video. If low latency matters and the encoder supports it, use the appropriate RTMPS workflow instead.
