The best setup for most YouTube charity fundraisers is a scheduled livestream with YouTube Giving attached, a computer webcam or suitable camera, clear audio, and a reliable upload connection. Start with the simplest setup that can deliver the event well; use an encoder if you need overlays, multiple video sources, or more production control. Check YouTube Giving eligibility before planning around its Donate button.
Check YouTube Giving eligibility before choosing equipment
YouTube Giving generally requires a channel to be in a supported location, have at least 10,000 subscribers, be in the YouTube Partner Program, and not be designated as made for kids. Availability varies by region, and some channels outside those general criteria may still see access. Check the channel’s Giving tab in YouTube Studio rather than assuming eligibility. YouTube’s Giving FAQs explain the current requirements.

The nonprofit must also be available in the fundraiser setup tool. YouTube’s supported nonprofit requirements include US 501(c)(3) public-charity status, participation in Google for Nonprofits, and opting into online fundraising via GuideStar. Google for Nonprofits’ setup instructions describe how to create a fundraiser.
Choose a setup that fits the event

YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. For a straightforward fundraiser, do not buy equipment simply because the event is charitable: YouTube says creators can use what they have. Prioritize speech that viewers can understand and an upload connection that can sustain the stream. A separate microphone is optional, not a YouTube requirement. Set up the fundraiser and scheduled stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Earn > Giving and create a fundraiser.
- Choose an available nonprofit and enter the campaign details.
- Attach the scheduled livestream to the fundraiser and publish it.
- Check the public watch page after the fundraiser’s start time to confirm that the Donate button appears.
The Donate button appears once the fundraiser has started. For Live Chat Donations, verify that live chat is enabled. If the button is missing, check the fundraiser’s start date, the live-chat setting when using chat donations, and whether the channel or video is designated as made for kids. Prepare the stream so viewers can follow and donate
Test the complete viewer path
- Set up at least two hours before the event, as YouTube recommends.
- Preview the stream in Live Control Room, then open the public watch page and check it on a phone as well as a computer.
- Listen for clear speech and check that the picture is stable before inviting viewers.
- If using a backup encoder, test the handoff and verify that the player rolls over to it.
Leave upload bandwidth headroom
YouTube recommends roughly 20% spare upload capacity beyond the stream bitrate. Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to an individual stream, so avoid relying on a connection that is already near capacity. If you use an encoder, YouTube recommends starting it at least 15 minutes before the event; this gives you time to confirm that it connects and the stream appears as expected. Explain the donation controls accurately
Tell viewers where to find the on-screen Donate control and which nonprofit the fundraiser supports. YouTube says it pays transaction fees so 100% of a contribution goes to the nonprofit through its donation partner, Network for Good. YouTube also says donations are non-refundable. Do not promise a particular tax treatment or refund beyond the platform’s stated terms. YouTube Giving FAQs cover these details.
Be aware of feature trade-offs: Live Chat Donations disable Super Chat and Super Stickers on that stream, and Super Thanks is unavailable on videos with donations.

If your channel cannot use YouTube Giving
Google for Nonprofits says creators who cannot use YouTube Giving can link an external fundraiser through an end screen; it gives GoFundMe and JustGiving as examples. Check that the chosen service and charity are currently suitable for your location and campaign. Make the destination clear to viewers before the event, and do not imply that an external link is YouTube’s own Donate button. Google’s nonprofit fundraising guidance describes this alternative.
