To add custom alerts to a YouTube live stream, set up an alert box with a provider such as Streamlabs or StreamElements, then show it in your streaming software. In OBS Studio, add the provider’s widget URL as a Browser Source. Customize the alerts you want, test them, and confirm they appear in the scene you plan to use.
What you need
You need a YouTube-connected alert provider and streaming software that can display its widget or overlay. No controller, webcam, microphone, green screen, or other physical purchase is required just to add alerts.

- Choose the event types you want viewers to see, such as subscribers, members, or Super Chats.
- Set the alert’s visual appearance and message where the provider offers those controls.
- Connect the alert to your broadcast scene with an integrated widget or a Browser Source.
- Use the provider’s test function and check the final scene before going live.
Set up YouTube alerts with Streamlabs and OBS
- Select YouTube in Streamlabs. Sign in and choose YouTube as the platform or account context. Open Streamlabs’ YouTube alert guide if you need the provider’s setup walkthrough. The YouTube Alert Box view offers platform-related alert types such as subscribers, members, and Super Chats. Available types and controls depend on the selected platform and account.
- Customize the Alert Box. Open Alert Box and adjust the event alerts you want to use. Streamlabs describes controls for alert appearance and behavior; general settings may include message templates and text-to-speech. Don’t assume every control applies to every alert type or account. See Streamlabs’ general alert settings guide for the provider’s current instructions.
- Add the alert to your streaming software. In Streamlabs Desktop, add the Alert Box widget from Sources. In OBS Studio without the Streamlabs plugin, copy the widget URL and add it as a Browser Source. OBS explains the third-party overlay approach in its guide to adding alerts.
- Place and test it. Put the source in the scene you intend to use, make sure it is visible and not covered by other elements, then run the provider’s test alert. Check the alert in the finished scene rather than only in the provider’s dashboard.
Use StreamElements instead
StreamElements lets you build an alert box in its Elements or Overlay editor, using existing elements or a custom alert box. You can control visual assets and dynamic text, then add the supplied widget URL to OBS as an overlay. Follow StreamElements’ alert editor instructions and its overlay getting-started guide.

Choose based on which provider you already use, which interface feels easier to manage, and the text, sound, animation, or assets you want to customize. Streamlabs documents a direct YouTube Alert Box flow; StreamElements documents configurable overlay-based alerts. Both connect provider-created alerts to your broadcast scene, and neither is universally best for every creator.

What to customize and check
- Event types: Select the YouTube interactions you want to acknowledge. The available list can depend on the platform selected in the provider.
- Message and visual treatment: Edit the message and visual assets where those options are available. Provider controls can differ by event type.
- Sound and speech: Check the provider’s alert settings for sound or text-to-speech options; don’t assume every option is supported for every event.
- Scene placement: Make sure the alert source is enabled in the live scene and positioned where it won’t obscure important content.
- Test: Trigger a test alert before going live and confirm it renders correctly in the intended scene.
Troubleshoot an alert that does not appear
- The provider’s test alert does not work: Check the alert configuration in the provider first. Verify that you selected YouTube and the intended alert type, then retry the provider’s test function.
- The test works in the provider but not in OBS: Confirm the correct widget URL or overlay was added and that the Browser Source is in the scene currently being previewed or streamed. Check that the source is visible and not hidden behind another scene element.
- The source exists but is missing from the broadcast layout: Inspect the active scene and its source visibility. A Browser Source added to a different scene will not necessarily appear in the one currently on air.
- Only some event types are available: Recheck the selected platform and account context. Provider controls and supported alert types can depend on that selection.
These checks follow the documented setup paths; they are not a complete diagnosis for every account or provider issue. The official setup instructions cited here do not establish a universal cause or fix for event delays, permission errors, or YouTube API problems.
Or let it run in the cloud
Custom alerts are displayed in your broadcast scene, but a cloud service can keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without leaving your computer on. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and playlists, not camera broadcasts. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
