For discussion, start with an interactive meeting workflow; for a one-to-many lecture, consider a controlled broadcast to an internal audience or a platform such as YouTube. Before choosing software, confirm your school’s edition and administrator settings, how viewers will access the class, and what should happen to recordings afterward.
Choose the class format before choosing the software
Interactive classes
For seminars, tutoring, and lessons where students need to ask questions or contribute, use a meeting workflow that supports participation and instructor controls. Google Meet documents in-organization livestreaming for uses such as academic information and staff training, but confirm that the viewing mode gives students the interaction your lesson requires. A stream designed mainly for viewing is not automatically equivalent to a two-way class.

Lecture broadcasts
For a large lecture with a small number of presenters, a broadcast can simplify presenter control and reach viewers outside the meeting tool. Google Meet documents streaming a meeting to YouTube for eligible editions. Zoom documents custom streaming to destinations that include YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook, subject to account and host requirements. These are documented options, not evidence that one platform delivers better teaching outcomes.
Compare the workflows against your school’s needs
| Need | Documented starting point | Verify before scheduling |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive class within an organization | Google Meet supports in-organization livestreaming. | Workspace edition, administrator enablement, audience capacity, and whether viewers can interact sufficiently for the lesson. |
| Broadcast a meeting to YouTube | Google Meet documents YouTube streaming for listed editions including Education Plus and Teaching and Learning Upgrade. | Channel approval and connection, host permissions, computer-based start, privacy, caption language, and replay handling. |
| Stream a Zoom meeting or webinar to a public destination or custom site | Zoom documents custom streaming with account, host-license, administrator, and desktop-client requirements. | Current account entitlement, destination requirements such as public URLs, and whether the event needs a webinar license. |
| Large Microsoft event | Microsoft recommends town halls or the unified Teams events experience following Teams live events retirement. | Availability and licensing in your tenant; do not assume the replacement has feature parity with the retired workflow. |
Evaluate options by interaction and presenter roles, audience scale and access controls, existing school contracts, destinations and privacy, captions and recording, LMS and identity-management needs, and setup complexity. The cited vendor documentation does not establish a comparable current-price table; check your school’s contract and the vendor’s current terms.

How to stream a Google Meet class to YouTube
Google documents this workflow for eligible editions, including Education Plus and Teaching and Learning Upgrade. Availability can depend on administrator settings and host-management configuration. Use a computer to start the stream.
- Confirm eligibility. Ask your Workspace administrator to verify the school’s edition and enable the feature if required. Confirm which host or co-host is permitted to start the stream.
- Prepare the YouTube channel. The channel must be approved for live streaming and connected to the meeting. Google says approval can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until class time. The person starting the stream needs access to the channel.
- Set audience and access. Decide whether the class is for an in-organization audience or a YouTube audience, and check the relevant privacy and permissions. Google’s host documentation describes view-only guests and cross-domain streaming as possible configurations, subject to edition and administrator settings.
- Start from the Meet session. Use Meet’s live-stream-to-YouTube option and follow the prompts for the connected channel. The stream is started from a computer; test the host and co-host roles in advance.
- End deliberately and manage the replay. A Meet-launched YouTube stream cannot be paused. If you need to stop and resume later, end it and create another stream. The video may remain available on YouTube afterward; the channel owner can delete it if necessary.
Zoom custom streaming: check the account conditions first
Zoom custom-site streaming is not a universal switch. Its documented setup depends on an eligible account, the appropriate licensed host, administrator enablement, and supported desktop software; HD video may also need to be enabled. Zoom lists YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook among streaming destinations.

- Confirm that the host has the required license and supported desktop app.
- Check the selected destination’s requirements, including whether it needs public URLs, and confirm whether the class format requires a webinar license.
- Run a test with the intended host, destination, and audience-access settings rather than assuming another Zoom account’s configuration will match.
Microsoft Teams: do not schedule a new class as a live event
Microsoft Learn’s Live events in Microsoft Teams overview, accessed October 3, 2026, states: “Teams live events retired on June 30, 2026.” Microsoft directs users to town halls or the unified Teams events experience instead. Events scheduled before June 30, 2026 are supported through February 28, 2027. For a new event, check your tenant’s current availability and licensing for the replacement experience; the retirement guidance does not establish that every former live-event feature is equivalent.
Plan recording, accessibility, privacy, and the room setup
Recordings and course access
Decide before class whether a recording is wanted, who can access it, where it will be stored, and when it should be removed. A Meet-to-YouTube video may remain available after the live session, so check channel visibility and replay handling against the class’s privacy expectations. Zoom’s education materials describe video libraries and LMS transfer; verify exact availability in the plan and contract your institution has.

Captions, transcripts, and language support
Confirm which captions, transcripts, and translation options are included in the institution’s specific service and configuration. Zoom’s education materials discuss these capabilities, but that does not establish their availability on every account or plan. Test the required caption language and accessibility workflow before relying on it for a lesson.
Identity, administration, and analytics
For school use, include LMS integration, single sign-on, identity management, permissions, and analytics in procurement and setup checks. Zoom describes these as elements of its education offerings; confirm which are covered by the school’s actual agreement and whether administrator setup is needed.

Audio and video equipment
A clear microphone and a webcam can help students follow a teacher, but equipment is optional and needs depend on the room and lesson. Zoom’s education materials point to virtual-learning hardware setups without endorsing a particular device or suggesting that every teacher must buy one. Test the existing microphone, camera, lighting, and network before purchasing anything.

Rehearse and troubleshoot before class
For a high-production event, Microsoft advises planning and rehearsal and notes that additional hardware or software may be appropriate. Ordinary classes do not necessarily need a production crew, but a short rehearsal can catch permission, audio, and replay mistakes while they are still easy to fix.
