Best Streaming Software for Gaming Consoles: PS5, Xbox and PC Options

The best console streaming software depends on your console and how much production control you need: start with PS5 Broadcast, consider Streamlabs Console on Xbox, or route console video into OBS on a PC.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the easiest console broadcast, use the PS5’s built-in Broadcast feature. For Xbox overlays or multistreaming without a PC, consider Streamlabs Console. Choose OBS Studio when you want more production control and can send your console’s video to a computer through a capture device or a supported app or Remote Play workflow. A capture card is not required for every console stream; the right choice depends on your console, destinations and how much control you need.

Which streaming software fits your console?

Option Best fit What you need to know
PS5 Broadcast PS5 owners who want to start quickly Broadcast directly from the console to a linked service, with selected audio, camera and overlay controls.
Streamlabs Console Xbox owners seeking scenes, overlays, widgets or multistreaming without a PC Browser-configured and Xbox-only. Its documented multistream workflow requires Twitch as the base destination.
OBS Studio Streamers who want PC-based production control OBS needs console video supplied through a capture device or supported app/Remote Play capture. The latter depends on a fast network connection.

These are different workflows, not interchangeable apps: PS5 Broadcast is native to the console; Streamlabs Console is a web-based Xbox workflow; OBS is PC software that receives the console’s picture and sound. Platform and service availability can change, so verify current compatibility before buying equipment or subscribing.

PS5: use the built-in Broadcast feature

For a straightforward PS5 stream, the native Broadcast workflow avoids setting up a computer or capture card. Sony’s current support instructions cover linking a service such as YouTube or Twitch, choosing broadcast details and going live. The exact available resolution and frame-rate options vary by service. Sony’s PS5 broadcast guide has the current console steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Link your streaming service in the PS5 settings. Some services may require two-factor authentication.
  2. Open the game you want to broadcast, press the Create button, then select Broadcast.
  3. Choose the linked service and enter the broadcast information shown on screen, such as the stream title and any service-specific details.
  4. Review Broadcast Options before going live. Set available resolution and frame rate, microphone and party audio, camera presentation, and supported overlays or chat-to-speech options.
  5. Start the broadcast and check the stream from a separate viewer device if possible, especially the picture, game audio and microphone balance.

PS5 visibility and party-audio checks

  • The broadcast shares the game screen and audio; it does not show every console screen. Some game scenes may also be blocked from broadcast.
  • Camera video and party audio are optional broadcast settings. Tell party members when their voices will be included and get their agreement before streaming them.
  • Viewer-comment and activity overlays, as well as chat-to-speech, depend on the available service and settings; do not assume every service exposes every option.

Native broadcasting is the simplest route, but its console-level controls are not the broad scene-composition toolkit available in a computer-based OBS setup.

Xbox: use Streamlabs Console for browser-configured scenes

Streamlabs describes Console as a web-based broadcasting studio available only to Xbox users. Its FAQ says a PC and capture card are not required. You configure scenes in a browser on a phone, tablet or computer, then select Streamlabs as the Xbox broadcast destination. Available features described by Streamlabs include overlays, alerts, widgets and webcam options; its FAQ names Chat Box, Event List and Stream Labels among supported widgets. Streamlabs Console FAQ.

Important limits and destination rules

  • The workflow is for Xbox, not PS5 or Nintendo Switch.
  • According to the FAQ, it supports a headset microphone connected through the controller; separate external microphones are not supported.
  • Streamlabs’ guide for multistreaming from Xbox documents Twitch as required. YouTube, TikTok and Kick are offered only as additional destinations alongside Twitch, not as individual destinations in that workflow. YouTube live streaming may require account verification, which can take up to 24 hours.
  • The FAQ published September 5, 2025 lists a seven-day trial, then $11 USD monthly or $79.99 USD annually. These are the vendor’s published terms on that dated page, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability.

For the browser setup and destination flow, follow the vendor’s Xbox multistream setup guide. Check its current steps and terms before relying on a particular destination combination.

OBS Studio: bring console video into a computer

OBS Studio can produce a console stream when the computer receives the console’s video and audio. OBS documents two broad routes: a game capture device, or capturing PS Remote Play or the Xbox app in a window. The app/Remote Play route relies on a sufficiently fast console-to-PC network connection for good quality. OBS’s FAQ is dated October 7, 2022, so confirm current compatibility for your console, operating system, app and OBS version before building a setup. OBS Project’s console game-capture FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Route A: capture device

  1. Check the exact console, capture device, computer ports and operating system compatibility before purchasing. A capture device is one route into OBS, not a universal requirement.
  2. Connect the console’s video output to the capture device and connect the device to the computer as its manufacturer specifies. If you want to play on a separate display, confirm the device supports the passthrough arrangement you need.
  3. Open OBS and add the capture device as a video source. Select the device’s supported resolution and frame rate, then configure its audio so game sound reaches the OBS mix.
  4. Add the other production elements you need—such as microphone, camera, overlays or additional scenes—and check that the game capture is not obscured or duplicated.
  5. Configure the streaming destination in OBS using that service’s current instructions, then make a short private or otherwise low-risk test before a public stream.

For macOS and Linux, OBS recommends capture devices supporting USB Video Class (UVC) for best operating-system compatibility. That recommendation does not establish compatibility for every model or console combination.

Route B: PS Remote Play or the Xbox app

  1. Install and configure the console’s supported Remote Play or Xbox app workflow on the PC, following the platform’s current instructions.
  2. Connect the console and PC over a fast, stable network. OBS notes that network speed between them affects the ability to maintain optimal quality.
  3. In OBS, capture the app window and verify that both game picture and audio are included. Check for window visibility, latency and network interruptions before streaming.

This avoids a capture device, but it makes the stream depend on the app and network path. If that path cannot deliver a stable picture, use a compatible capture device instead.

Switch and Switch Lite compatibility

OBS describes capture-device use with Nintendo Switch family consoles while docked. Switch Lite cannot be docked, so it is not compatible with that docked capture-device route. Check the precise console model and connection method rather than assuming the Switch guidance applies to Switch Lite.

Do you need a capture card?

No. PS5 owners can use native Broadcast, and Xbox owners can use Streamlabs Console without a PC or capture card. OBS can also capture a supported PS Remote Play or Xbox app window. A capture device is useful when you want to feed console video directly into a PC production setup or when network-based app capture is not suitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an OBS setup, Elgato Game Capture 4K S is one possible device to investigate, not a required purchase. In its July 22, 2025 launch announcement, Corsair/Elgato described 4K60 real-time capture, zero-latency passthrough, preview delay as low as 30 ms, capture up to 1440p120 and 1080p240, HDR10 passthrough up to 4K60, HDR10 capture up to 1080p60, and UVC compatibility with OBS and other applications. Those are manufacturer-published specifications. The announcement’s $159.99 figure was a 2025 launch price, not current retail pricing. Confirm the exact console, computer, resolution and feature compatibility, and check current availability and price, before buying. Corsair/Elgato’s product announcement.

Check these details before going live

  • Service access: Link the account or destination in advance and check whether verification or two-factor authentication is required. YouTube live streaming verification may take up to 24 hours, according to Streamlabs’ Xbox multistream guide.
  • Audio: Test game, microphone and party audio separately. Make sure you have permission to broadcast other players’ voices.
  • Scene visibility: Know what the audience can see. PS5 broadcasting does not expose every screen, and some game scenes may be unavailable.
  • Network: For OBS app/Remote Play capture, test the console-to-PC connection under the conditions you expect to stream in.
  • Copyright and platform rules: Use game, music and other content only when you have the rights or permission needed, and follow the destination platform’s live-stream rules. Platform enforcement can affect audio, visibility or whether a stream remains available.
  • Hardware fit: For a capture device, check the model’s supported inputs, passthrough, capture modes, operating-system support and console compatibility rather than relying on a resolution headline alone.

Common problems and what to check

The console will not start the broadcast

Check that the streaming service is linked, the account is eligible to go live, and any requested two-factor authentication or verification is complete. If using YouTube through the documented Streamlabs multistream workflow, allow for possible account verification time.

Viewers cannot hear the microphone or party

Review the console’s broadcast audio options, the selected microphone and party-audio controls, and the headset connection. On Streamlabs Console, the FAQ specifies a controller-connected headset microphone and says separate external microphones are unsupported. Confirm party members know their voices are included.

OBS shows a black screen or no console picture

Confirm that the capture device or app window is the selected OBS source, the device is connected and recognized, and its input matches the console’s output. For app capture, verify the app is actually displaying the game. Recheck the exact device/console/OS combination against current manufacturer and OBS support information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The OBS picture stutters or loses quality

If you are capturing Remote Play or the Xbox app, inspect the network between console and PC first; OBS identifies that connection as a quality dependency. For capture hardware, check whether the selected mode is supported by the device and computer. Reduce the selected output mode if the setup cannot sustain it reliably.

A scene, game screen or chat overlay is missing

Check whether the console or game permits that content to be broadcast and whether the relevant overlay option is enabled and supported by the destination. PS5 does not share non-game screens, and some in-game scenes may be blocked.

Or let it run in the cloud
