If Facebook still shows an old thumbnail, first make sure the public page serves the new og:image, then use Meta’s Sharing Debugger to scrape the exact URL people share again. If the debugger sees the new image URL but still displays old pixels, publish the replacement image at a new, versioned URL, update og:image, and scrape again. Check an already-published post separately; refreshing a preview in the debugger does not guarantee that an existing post attachment will change.
Why is Facebook still showing the old image after I changed it?
Changing an image on your site does not by itself show that Facebook has fetched the revised preview. The stale preview can come from several different places:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- The page still serves old metadata. The public HTML may still point to the previous image, even if the page looks updated in your browser.
- Facebook has not fetched the corrected page yet. Requesting a new scrape asks Facebook’s crawler to revisit the URL.
- The image URL has not changed. If you replaced the file in place, Facebook may still be serving a cached copy associated with that URL.
- The crawler cannot fetch the page or image. Errors, redirects, or access restrictions can prevent it from seeing the intended content.
- You are looking at an older post. A refreshed debugger preview and the attachment on an already-published post are separate things to check.
There is no verified fixed cache lifetime or guaranteed refresh delay to rely on here. Use what the debugger actually fetched to decide what to fix next.

Publish and verify the corrected metadata
Deploy the change before asking Facebook to scrape the page. Confirm that the public page’s initial HTML response contains the intended Open Graph tags and that
og:imagepoints to the new image. A browser-rendered page can differ from its initial HTML if scripts add or change metadata after load, so do not rely only on what you see in the rendered page.#1 Best Overall

Check that the page and image are reachable
Make sure the exact page URL and image URL are publicly accessible to a crawler. Check whether either URL redirects or returns an error, and confirm that the image URL leads to the intended file. Keep any warnings or errors shown by the debugger in view as you diagnose the result.
-
Scrape the exact URL people share
Open Meta’s Facebook Sharing Debugger, enter the precise URL that people share, inspect the fetched information, and use the available control to scrape the page again. Meta/Facebook for Business guidance describes the debugger as a way to prompt a crawler update after Open Graph metadata changes. The interface and its wording can change.

Check the fetched image URL and pixels
Look at the
og:imagevalue Facebook reports, then compare it with the image you intended to publish. If the URL is new and the debugger shows the intended image, the page metadata is being picked up. If the URL is new but the displayed pixels are still old, change the image URL as described below.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Inspect the existing post separately
If the debugger shows the corrected preview but an older live post still has the wrong attachment, inspect that post directly. Do not assume that scraping the page again automatically edits attachments on posts already published.

Why does the debugger still show my old og:image?
If the debugger reports the old image URL, focus on the page and the URL being scraped—not on replacing the image again. Verify that you submitted the exact shared URL, that it does not redirect somewhere unexpected, and that the HTML Facebook receives contains the new tag. Look for duplicate or conditional Open Graph tags, and check whether the updated metadata exists in the initial HTML rather than only after client-side scripts run.
The debugger shows the new URL, but the thumbnail still has old pixels
If you overwrote an image without changing its URL, publish the replacement at a distinct URL, such as a versioned filename. Update the page’s og:image to that new URL, deploy the change, and request another scrape of the page. This is a practical troubleshooting step, not a guarantee of a particular cache lifetime or refresh speed.

The debugger cannot fetch the page or image
Check the page and image URLs for errors, redirects, or restrictions, and confirm that each is publicly reachable and returns the intended content. If the page loads correctly in your browser but not in the debugger, inspect the initial HTML response and the debugger’s reported errors rather than assuming the crawler receives the same result as your browser.
Or skip the browser setup
A screenshot can help you visually check what a page looks like, but it does not replace the Sharing Debugger for checking which Open Graph image Facebook fetched. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its screenshots can be useful for a separate visual check of the page. For Facebook’s preview, use the debugger and inspect its fetched metadata.
