A toaster oven may smoke because it is new, because grease or food residue is burning, or because something is wrong with the appliance. A small amount of smoke or odor during initial use can be normal for some models, but it is not a blanket reason to keep using a smoking oven. Check your model’s manual, and stop using the appliance if smoke is heavy, persistent, recurring, or accompanied by an error or visible damage.
First, identify when the smoke appears
When did the smoke start, and what was the oven doing? These checks help narrow down the cause without treating every smoking toaster oven as harmless.

- First use: Look up the appliance’s exact first-use instructions. Some manufacturers describe limited initial smoke or odor; others specify an empty-heating procedure.
- During cooking or broiling: Check for grease, oil, sauce, or food dripping onto a hot heating element, as well as residue on the rack, tray, crumb tray, or oven interior.
- When empty, or after cleaning: If the oven still produces heavy or recurring smoke with no apparent residue, discontinue use and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Common causes and what to do
Smoke during the first use
Some toaster ovens may produce a slight odor or a little smoke during initial use. The Oster manual says this may happen initially and should not recur after a few uses. Iris Ohyama’s guidance attributes first-use smoke to protective oil and points users to its initial empty-heating instructions. Those directions are not interchangeable: follow the manual for your exact model rather than applying another brand’s temperature or timing.
Grease or food contacting the heating element
Fat from food can smoke if it drips or splatters onto a hot element. This can be more noticeable while broiling: GE and Panasonic both flag fat on the heater as a possible cause. Check the food and cookware placement, avoid overcooking, and, where appropriate for the recipe and appliance, reduce the temperature. Do not reach into a hot oven to remove grease or food.

Crumbs, spills, or baked-on residue
Crumbs and food buildup on the crumb tray or inside the oven can burn and cause smoke or a burnt smell. Before cleaning, switch the oven off, unplug it, and let it cool fully. Follow the manual for the interior and removable parts; do not assume every surface or part can be washed the same way.
For the Oster model covered by its manual, specified parts can be cleaned with mild soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge. The manual also says not to immerse the oven body and recommends emptying the crumb tray frequently. Do not touch or scrub a heating element unless your own model’s instructions explicitly allow it.

Keep the oven clear of fire hazards
Use the clearances and placement instructions in your model’s manual. The cited Oster manual warns that fire may occur if its countertop oven is covered or touches or sits near flammable materials, including curtains, towels, and walls. It also says to keep the appliance clear of walls and not to store items on top while it is operating.

- Do not put paper, cardboard, or plastic in the oven.
- Do not cover the oven or crumb tray with foil; the Oster manual warns this can cause overheating.
- Empty and clean the crumb tray as directed for your model.
When to stop using it and get help
Turn the oven off and stop using it if smoke is heavy, continues after the appliance is cool and clean, recurs during later use, or appears alongside an error or visible damage. Do not keep running it to see whether the smoke clears. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider and provide the model number and any displayed error code. GE directs users to service for specified codes, but that guidance is not a universal diagnosis for every smoking toaster oven.
