There is no single deletion switch for a connected car. To prepare a vehicle for sale—or to protect your privacy—you may need to erase data stored in the car, remove its VIN from every manufacturer account, cancel or transfer subscriptions, change data-sharing settings, and separately request deletion of information held by the manufacturer. A factory reset alone may not do all of that, and deleting the phone app is not a reliable substitute.
Exact steps depend on the make, model year, equipment, connected service, and country. Use the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s current support and privacy pages for your specific vehicle.

First, know which data and access you are trying to remove
Connected-car information can live in more than one place. The infotainment system may retain contacts, paired-device names, map destinations, profiles, preferences, or Wi-Fi details. A manufacturer account may still link your VIN to remote services. The manufacturer may also hold information already transmitted by the vehicle.

|---|---|---|
| In-car reset or delete-personal-data command | Information stored locally in the vehicle, depending on the model and reset scope | Deletion of data already transmitted to the manufacturer |
| Remove vehicle or VIN from an account | The account’s association with the vehicle and, depending on the maker, remote access or data transmission | Erasure of every local or manufacturer-held record |
| Cancel or transfer a subscription | Connected-service access and billing status | Deletion of account data |
| Privacy or account-deletion request | Personal information held outside the vehicle, subject to the maker’s process and applicable rules | Erasure of information the maker is permitted or required to retain |
| Uninstall the phone app | The app on that phone | Vehicle unlinking, data deletion, or cessation of data sharing |
Manufacturers describe these actions differently, and their effects are not interchangeable. Lucid says an infotainment reset deletes only vehicle data stored in the vehicle, not vehicle data stored outside it, including data already sent to Lucid (Lucid Motors legal and privacy page). Kia’s UK FAQ likewise distinguishes removing connected-vehicle data or resetting Kia Connect from deleting personal data linked to a Kia Account (Kia Connect UK legal FAQ).

Before you sell or transfer the car
1. Identify the exact vehicle and market
Record the make, model, model year, and country or market where the car is registered. Find that vehicle’s owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s current connected-services instructions. Do not assume another model year uses the same menu labels or that a reset has the same scope. General Motors directs owners to the owner’s manual for deleting in-car personal information or restoring factory settings (GM U.S. Consumer Privacy Statement).
2. Save records you may need
Download account documents, receipts, statements, or service records before closing an account if you want to keep them. Tesla warns that account deletion can remove access to account documents and services (Tesla Support: account data and deletion).

3. Erase personal information stored in the car
Follow the manual’s procedure for a factory or master reset, system reset, or delete-personal-data function. The precise menu and what it erases vary by vehicle. Ford says its master or factory reset removes imported personal information such as contact lists, paired-device names, and connected Wi-Fi network names (Ford U.S. Privacy Notice). GM warns that personal information left in a vehicle may be accessible to future users (GM U.S. Consumer Privacy Statement).

4. Remove the vehicle from every manufacturer account
In each relevant app or web account, remove the vehicle or VIN from the garage. Check secondary or shared accounts as well as the primary owner’s account. Ford says removing a vehicle from all associated accounts is needed to remove remote access and stop related information transmission; for some vehicles with a Connectivity Device, VIN removal is specifically required (Ford U.S. Privacy Notice). Toyota Canada tells sellers to use “Remove Vehicle” in the Toyota app (Toyota Canada Connected Services Help Centre).

5. Check subscriptions and service transfers
Look at each connected service in the account and confirm whether it is canceled, transferable, or still active after the vehicle is removed or reset. The outcome differs by manufacturer: Toyota Canada says removing the vehicle stops active subscriptions, while Volkswagen says its factory-reset process cancels connected-service subscriptions and vehicle pairing to the myVW account (Toyota Canada Connected Services Help Centre; Volkswagen: disconnect remote vehicle access). Check the account for the actual status rather than assuming cancellation or a refund.
6. Close the online account separately, if that is your goal
Removing a VIN is not necessarily the same as deleting an account. Use the manufacturer’s account-deletion flow or privacy-request channel if you want to close the entire account or request deletion of personal information. Kia’s UK FAQ says deleting personal data linked to a Kia Account requires an account-portal deletion request. Tesla says active Tesla products must be removed before an account-deletion request; deletion ends sign-in and access to associated services and documents (Kia Connect UK legal FAQ; Tesla Support: account data and deletion).
Rank #4
7. Review location and other data-sharing controls
Check both in-car privacy settings and the manufacturer account for controls covering location or connected-vehicle data. If you want the manufacturer to stop receiving covered vehicle data, use its documented privacy or transmission-deactivation process. Stellantis describes a “Cancel for Privacy Reasons” request to deactivate transmission of covered data, but says most connected features will stop as a result (Stellantis Connected Services privacy policy). A setting that limits future sharing should not be treated as deletion of information already collected.

- Confirm the VIN no longer appears in each relevant account.
- Check that remote commands no longer work from the former owner’s account.
- Confirm the expected subscription status.
- Verify that the in-car reset completed.
- Keep confirmation of any account or privacy request.
Uninstalling the app alone does not complete these checks. Ford explicitly says removing its app without also performing a master or factory reset will not disable data sharing (Ford U.S. Privacy Notice).

If you bought a used car that is still linked to someone else
Use the owner’s manual to erase vehicle-resident information, then contact the manufacturer or dealer if the previous owner’s account still controls access. You may not be able to delete information from the previous owner’s online account yourself; the former account holder or manufacturer support may need to handle that account-side step. Treat the old profile in the car and the old account association as separate problems.
Volkswagen cautions that its factory reset cancels subscriptions and vehicle pairing and is best used when the owner can maintain physical access to the vehicle (Volkswagen: disconnect remote vehicle access). Follow the process for your exact vehicle and make sure you can still complete any required account or service setup afterward.
What a reset or deletion request cannot promise
A reset can erase local data without removing information already sent to the manufacturer. Removing an account link or disabling future transmission does not, by itself, prove that past records were erased. Do not assume every copy, backup, business record, or legally retained item will be deleted: retention rules and privacy rights depend on the company and jurisdiction. Check the manufacturer’s privacy notice and request process for the applicable country, and ask for confirmation when available.
