To check whether a studio name is available in the United States, search it separately in federal trademark records, your state’s business-entity registry, your state’s trademark resources, domain registration data, and the social platforms you plan to use. A result in one place does not clear the name in the others. These checks can identify conflicts, but a preliminary search cannot guarantee legal clearance.
What “available” means for a studio name
There is no single database that answers every version of the question “Is this studio name available?” A state may accept a business entity name while a similar trademark is already in use; a domain may be unregistered while the name presents a trademark concern; and a social handle may be unavailable even when the other checks look favorable.

- Business-entity name: whether your state registry will accept the name for the business form and jurisdiction you choose.
- Trademark: whether your intended use could conflict with existing rights, including similar names used for related goods or services.
- Domain: whether registration data indicates that the domain you want is registered.
- Social handle: whether the exact handle can be claimed on each platform relevant to your studio.
These are separate checks. None alone establishes that you can safely use the name for every purpose.

1. Record the name and likely variations
Write down the exact candidate, then list reasonable variants to search: different spacing or punctuation, singular and plural forms, abbreviations, likely misspellings, and similar-sounding wording. For trademark research, include names used for services or goods related to what your studio will actually offer. This broadens the search; it does not determine whether any particular variation is legally safe. The USPTO Trademark Search help and search resources explain searching for similar marks and clearance.

2. Search federal trademark records
Use the USPTO Trademark Search system to look for the exact name and the variations you recorded. The USPTO says its database includes registered and applied-for marks. Review close results rather than stopping at an exact match: note the mark’s status, owner, and listed goods or services, and consider how those services relate to your studio’s planned work.
A quiet result for the exact wording is not a guarantee of clearance. The USPTO describes searching as an important part of clearance before applying, but a database search is preliminary and is not a legal opinion about your proposed use.
3. Check the relevant state’s business and trademark records
Identify the state where you plan to form and operate the business. Search that state’s official business-entity registry and consult its naming rules for your business form. Separately, check the state-level trademark information available from the relevant state office. The USPTO provides a list of state trademark offices and notes that state trademark applications go to the specific state office.

Without knowing your state and business form, no particular filing rule or registry result can be determined here.

4. Check the domain you want
Search the domain version you hope to use with ICANN Lookup or check registration options with a registrar. ICANN Lookup uses RDAP to retrieve current domain registration data; if data is unavailable through RDAP for a query, the lookup may redirect to a registry or registrar WHOIS service.
This is a domain-registration-data check, not a trademark clearance or state business-name search. A domain result does not resolve whether the studio name is available for your services or acceptable to your state.

5. Check each important social platform directly
Search for the exact handle or attempt to claim it on every platform you expect to use. Availability is specific to each service and can change. Do not infer that a handle is available because the matching domain is unregistered, or that you have rights to the name because a state registry accepts it.

Compare the names you found with the studio’s actual services—such as design, recording, or photography—and look closely at similar marks associated with related services. If the search surfaces close matches, or the name will carry substantial commercial value, consider asking a qualified trademark professional to review it. A preliminary search is not equivalent to comprehensive clearance advice.

How to compare multiple candidate names
When you have two or more finalists, compare each against the same checks rather than letting one convenient result decide the choice:
| Comparison | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Federal trademark records | Similar active or pending marks, especially for related services or goods; review status, owner, and listed offerings in the USPTO database. |
| State business and trademark records | Results and applicable naming requirements for the state where you intend to form and operate; consult that state’s registry and trademark office. |
| Domain | Whether registration data indicates that the preferred domain is registered; verify registration options separately with a registrar. |
| Social handles | Whether the exact handle can be claimed on each platform that matters to your studio. |
| Practical branding | Whether people can spell, distinguish, and recognize the name in the market for your actual services. This is a branding consideration, not legal clearance. |
What a search can—and cannot—tell you
The USPTO’s official search help states, “Our database includes every mark that’s been registered or applied for.” That describes the federal database’s coverage of registered and applied-for marks; it does not mean that a clean search proves a name is free of every possible conflict or establishes state, domain, or social availability.
ICANN Lookup answers a different question by providing domain registration data. State business registries and state trademark offices address their own records and rules, while platform searches address handle availability on those services. A favorable result in one category should not be treated as a substitute for another.
