Most “no sound” problems on a Samsung TV come from a wrong audio output setting, a muted or low volume, a connected device, or an HDMI ARC/eARC mismatch. They are not usually a failed speaker. Work through the checks below in order. The sequence tells you whether the fault is in the TV, in a source such as a cable box or console, or in a soundbar or receiver. Menu names differ by model year, region and software version, so treat the paths here as examples. If yours differ, check your model’s manual on Samsung’s support site.
1. Check volume and the sound output destination
Confirm the TV is not muted and the volume is turned up. Then open the Sound menu, for example Settings > Sound > Sound Output. Some models call it Speaker Settings.

- To test the built-in speakers, select TV Speaker.
- If you use a soundbar, receiver, Bluetooth speaker or optical device on purpose, select that device instead.
Selecting an external speaker can disable some TV remote volume and mute controls. If the TV is sending sound to a device, check that device’s power and volume as well.
2. Run the TV’s Sound Test
The Sound Test is the best way to separate a TV problem from a source problem. On many models it is under Support > Self Diagnosis. Newer menu layouts may place Device Care before Self Diagnosis. Start the test and follow the on-screen prompts.

- The test is silent or reports a problem: continue with the settings and software steps below. If the problem persists, contact service.
A failed test points toward the TV, but it does not identify which internal part is at fault.
3. If only one HDMI source has no sound
- Check that the HDMI plug is fully seated and that the TV is on the correct input.
- Restart the connected device and the TV.
- Inspect the cable for damage. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance suggests testing with a short HDMI cable.
Samsung notes that a low-quality cable can be associated with missing or intermittent audio. Replace a cable only if it is damaged, unsuitable for the equipment, or implicated by your testing. A new cable is not a universal fix.

4. If you use a soundbar or receiver over HDMI ARC/eARC
Connect the right ports
Use the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC. Connect it to the soundbar’s port labeled HDMI TO TV (ARC/eARC). Both devices must be powered on.
Match the input and the output
Set the soundbar to the input that receives the TV’s return audio. Depending on the product, this is often TV ARC/eARC or D.IN. On the TV, choose the soundbar or receiver in Sound Output.

Check Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC)
Some setups require Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) to be enabled. Its location depends on the TV generation.
For eARC hardware, check mode and format
If both devices support eARC, check HDMI-eARC Mode and the digital audio output format. A format mismatch can cause silence. Samsung’s 2024-and-later troubleshooting page lists source selection, eARC mode and format mismatch as possible causes. Samsung’s Canadian eARC guidance recommends eARC-compatible cabling. That page applies to products sold in Canada.

5. Restart, update and reset sound settings
Restart the TV and all connected devices, then check for a TV software update. If sound is still missing, use Reset Sound in the Sound settings. This restores audio settings to defaults and is different from a full factory reset. A factory reset erases your apps, accounts and setup. Samsung’s material does not present it as a universal first step for audio problems, so try it only if your model’s guidance recommends it.
6. Choosing how to route sound
| Route | What to check |
|---|---|
| Built-in TV speakers | Sound Output set to TV Speaker; not muted |
| HDMI ARC/eARC soundbar or receiver | Labeled ports on both ends, correct soundbar input, Anynet+, eARC mode, audio format |
| Optical | Optical output selected on the TV; the external device’s input and volume |
| Bluetooth speaker | Paired and selected as output; the speaker’s own volume |
These are options, not interchangeable fixes. Availability varies by TV and peripheral.
7. When to contact Samsung support
