To ping a server, open a terminal or Command Prompt and run ping -c 4 example.com on Linux or ping /n 4 example.com on Windows. Swap in the server’s IP address to test by address instead of name. You get a reply line with a round-trip time for each request. That tells you the server’s network address answers ICMP and how long the round trip takes from your connection. It doesn’t tell you whether the website or application works.
What a ping test actually measures
Ping sends ICMP Echo Request packets and listens for Echo Replies. The iputils manual describes it this way: “ping uses the ICMP protocol’s mandatory ECHO_REQUEST datagram to elicit an ICMP ECHO_RESPONSE from a host or gateway” (Linux ping(8) manual). The time shown is round-trip time (RTT): from your machine to the destination and back. Microsoft’s documentation describes the Windows command the same way (Microsoft Learn: ping).

Ping does not load a web page, log in, or query a database. Application-level response time (for example, how long an HTTP request takes) is a separate measurement.

Linux (iputils)
ping -c 4 example.com sends four requests and stops. Without -c, Linux pings until you press Ctrl+C. The manual also documents -4 and -6 to force IPv4 or IPv6, and -I to bind to an interface, plus timeout and deadline options (ping(8)).

Windows
ping /n 4 example.com sends four requests. Microsoft documents /n <count> and says the target can be a computer name or an IP address (Microsoft Learn). Without /n, Windows sends a default number of requests.
Don’t treat the switches as interchangeable. -c and /n belong to different implementations, and other systems may differ again.

Ping by IP address vs. by domain
Both forms are valid destinations (RFC 2151). A domain name must first be resolved to an address, so a name test involves DNS and an IP test doesn’t. Running both helps isolate problems:

- IP answers, name fails: suspect DNS or name resolution.
- Neither answers: check your own connectivity and routing. Also consider that the server or a firewall may simply not reply to ICMP.
- Both answer: the server’s address is reachable by ICMP. That says nothing about HTTP(S) or any particular service.
How to read the results
Each reply line shows the responding address and the RTT. With several requests you can see variation and missing replies. Most implementations print a summary with packet loss and minimum, average and maximum times; the exact format and precision depend on the implementation.

To compare two servers or two runs fairly:
- Test from the same client and network, in the same time window.
- Use the same address family (IPv4 or IPv6) and the same count and options.
- Look at typical RTT, spread and packet loss, not just the single fastest reply.
- Don’t compare a name-based test with an address-based one without noting that resolution may differ.
There’s no universal “good ping” threshold in the primary documentation. Your distance from the server, the route, your access network and what you need the connection for all matter. A figure that suits file hosting may be poor for a real-time game.
When no reply doesn’t mean the server is down
Many hosts and firewalls drop or rate-limit ICMP, so a timeout doesn’t prove a web server is offline. Check the actual service (open the site, or test the port) before concluding anything.

For intermittent loss or a suspect route, use MTR, which combines ping and traceroute and shows latency and loss at each hop (Cloudflare Support). Be careful with per-hop loss: a middle hop that shows loss while later hops look fine usually just deprioritizes ICMP aimed at itself.

Your ping only shows the path from your own network. Public looking-glass services run ping from a provider’s vantage point; RFC 8522 describes this use, validating reachability and measuring RTT for a name or address. Use one when you want to know how the server looks from another region.
