A Samsung SmartTag can beep because SmartThings Find’s Ring feature is sounding it, because it is confirming setup, or—on SmartTag2—because it did not recognize the battery properly when it was inserted. If the sound keeps happening without an obvious trigger, Samsung does not identify one definitive cause for recurring random SmartTag2 beeps. Check the timing and app activity first, then follow the battery and reset steps for your exact model.
Why your Samsung SmartTag may be beeping
The timing is the best first clue. Samsung documents several situations in which a SmartTag sound is expected, but it does not confirm that any one of them explains every unexplained or recurring beep.

| When it beeps | What Samsung documents | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| After Ring is tapped in SmartThings Find | Ring deliberately makes the tag beep so you can locate it nearby. | Stop Ring in the app once you find the tag. |
| During pairing or setup | A sound can confirm pairing mode. | If the timing matches setup, treat it as a setup cue. |
| Immediately after inserting a SmartTag2 battery | The battery may not have been recognized properly. | Reseat the battery and inspect the terminals. |
| Repeatedly, with no clear trigger | Samsung’s troubleshooting article does not give a definitive cause or dedicated fix for this exact symptom. | Check app activity and battery seating, then use the model-specific reset instructions. Contact Samsung if it continues. |
What to check before resetting it
Identify your SmartTag model
Start with the model name: Samsung’s battery and reset instructions differ between SmartTag or SmartTag+ and SmartTag2. Samsung’s SmartTag2 product and support page lists a global user manual. Use the instructions for the generation you own rather than assuming the procedures are interchangeable.
Check whether Ring or setup explains the sound
If the beeping began during a close-range search, check whether someone tapped Ring in SmartThings Find. That feature intentionally makes the tag beep. A sound during pairing can also be normal when it coincides with setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
For SmartTag2, reseat the battery and inspect the contacts
If the sound happens immediately after a battery is inserted, Samsung says the SmartTag2 may not have recognized it properly. Follow Samsung’s SmartTag2 troubleshooting steps to reinsert the battery and wipe the terminals when addressing power problems. This documented possibility applies to the sound after insertion; it does not establish why a tag might beep later or at random.
Check battery level where your model supports it
Samsung’s US guide for the original SmartTag and SmartTag+ says SmartThings displays the current battery level and specifies a CR2032 battery for those models. If the app shows a depleted cell, replace it as directed in the Samsung SmartTag battery guide. Do not assume that low battery is the cause of a beep unless the app or device gives you evidence for it.

Samsung says the original SmartTag and SmartTag+ CR2032 battery may last about a year, depending on usage and other factors; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed replacement interval. For SmartTag2, Samsung reported up to 500 days in typical use and 700 days or more with Power Saving Mode, based on internal lab tests. Samsung says actual life varies with usage, environmental conditions, battery manufacturer, and other factors; these figures are not a guarantee. Samsung’s published troubleshooting does not establish a definitive explanation for recurring random SmartTag2 beeps beyond the possibility of battery recognition trouble immediately after insertion. It also does not provide a dedicated fix for that exact recurring symptom. Avoid treating theories such as movement, loose contacts, or firmware as confirmed causes.
