If your external Blu-ray drive keeps disconnecting, first identify what has actually disappeared: power or activity, the drive from the operating system, the disc, or access from a playback app. Each points to a different layer of the problem. Check the USB connection and power first, then confirm whether Windows or macOS recognizes the drive before troubleshooting discs or software.
What does “disappearing” mean?
“Why does my computer keep disconnecting my external Blu-ray drive?” and “Why did my external Blu-ray drive disappear?” can describe several different symptoms. Note your computer and operating-system version, the exact drive model, whether it is connected directly or through a hub, when the dropout happens, whether the drive has power, and whether reconnecting makes it appear again.

- No power or activity: Start with the cable, port, hub, and any model-specific power supply.
- The operating system no longer lists the drive: Investigate the USB connection, device recognition, and system configuration.
- The drive is listed but a disc will not read: Check the disc and whether the drive supports its format.
- The drive and disc are visible but an app cannot open them: Check that app’s supported media and playback requirements.
A playback app cannot make an unrecognized drive reappear. Establish which layer is failing before changing software or buying hardware.

- Disconnect and reconnect the drive. Make sure the cable is firmly seated at both the drive and computer.
- Try another port on the computer and connect the drive directly, bypassing any USB or Thunderbolt hub.
- If you need a self-powered hub, check that it is connected to its AC adapter. A hub is not a universal fix; it is one possible factor when the setup has a power issue.
- If the drive has a separate power supply or an additional power cable, follow the instructions for that exact model.
- Restart the computer if the drive remains absent. ASUS’s quick-start guide for the BW-16D1X-U, for example, recommends checking the USB cable connection and restarting for a detection failure; that advice is specific to that model, not a guaranteed fix for every drive. For a Mac power alert such as “USB Devices Disabled” or a message that the device needs more power, Apple advises reconnecting the device, trying another port, connecting directly rather than through a hub, and checking the AC power of a self-powered hub. See Apple’s USB Devices Disabled guidance.

Does Windows still recognize the drive?
In Windows 10 or 11, check Device Manager for the optical drive and inspect its status. If it has a yellow exclamation point, record the status code before changing settings. Microsoft lists examples including codes 19, 31, 32, 39, and 41, and notes that the issue can follow an operating-system upgrade or installation or removal of disc-recording software. Microsoft summarizes the problem this way: “There are various reasons why a CD or DVD drive is not detected.”
Use Microsoft’s optical-drive recognition guide for its current driver update or reinstall steps and restart instructions. Follow the PC or drive maker’s guidance as well. The guide discusses BIOS and chipset settings where applicable, but those steps do not apply to every external USB drive; do not change unrelated firmware settings simply because the drive is missing. Microsoft also cautions that its listed fixes may not resolve every case.

Does macOS recognize the drive?
Separate accessory recognition from whether a disc mounts or plays. Check the Mac’s device view to determine whether the drive is detected, and consult current Apple instructions for your Mac model and macOS version.

Apple’s USB SuperDrive connection instructions are for connection guidance only. The SuperDrive is a CD/DVD drive, not a Blu-ray drive, so those instructions do not establish Blu-ray compatibility.
What if the drive appears but cannot read a disc?
Keep disc reading separate from USB recognition. Try a known-good disc in a format supported by the exact drive model, check the disc for damage, and confirm that it is loaded in the correct orientation. Consult the drive manual for supported media. If one disc fails while another supported disc reads, focus on that disc rather than treating the drive as disconnected.

What if the operating system sees the disc but an app does not?
Check the playback or authoring app’s supported source formats and requirements. A drive and disc that are visible to the operating system can still be unavailable to a particular application. Installing a generic player will not solve a drive that Windows or macOS does not recognize.

When should you contact the maker or replace the drive?
Before concluding that the drive has failed, try it on another computer and, where practical, test a known-good cable or port. If it repeatedly disappears on multiple computers after a direct connection and correct power, contact the drive maker. Provide the exact drive model, computer and operating-system version, any Device Manager status code, when the disconnection occurs, and the checks you have already completed.

Consider replacing the drive only when those checks make hardware failure plausible. Confirm USB connector and host-port compatibility, operating-system support, supported disc formats, and power requirements against the exact replacement model’s documentation. A USB-C-to-USB adapter is relevant only if the connectors do not match and the drive maker supports that connection.
