If your Roku keeps buffering, first check whether the problem affects one title, one app, or everything you stream. Then use Roku’s built-in connection test to separate an app or service problem from weak Wi-Fi or an internet-access issue. Work through the fixes below in order, starting with the least disruptive.
First, find out whether the problem is one title, one app, or your whole Roku
Try another movie or episode in the same service. If that also buffers, open a different streaming app. If only one title or app has trouble while other content plays normally, the cause may be specific to that service rather than your Roku’s general connection. Check whether the service reports an interruption and whether your account or subscription includes access to the content. Roku’s playback troubleshooting guidance recommends this kind of comparison.

- One title: Try another title in the same app.
- One app: Test a different app, then check the affected service and your access to its content.
- Multiple apps: Continue with Roku’s network test.
Run Roku’s connection test and read the results
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings > Network > Check connection.
- After the test, open Settings > Network > About to review the connection and signal information shown for your device.
The connection test checks whether the Roku can see the network and reach the internet. If the Roku connects to your router but cannot reach the internet, try opening a public website on another device connected to the same network. If that device also cannot get online, contact your internet service provider about a possible outage or access problem. Roku’s connection-check instructions explain the test and its results.

What Roku’s signal ratings mean
- Excellent: Strong, stable signal. Roku says, “Streaming should be smooth with no buffering” for this result; it is a description of the rating, not a guarantee that every app or network condition will be trouble-free.
- Good: Reliable for most streaming.
- Fair: Weak signal.
- Poor: Very weak signal, likely to cause buffering or disconnections.
Compare your internet speed with Roku’s typical figures
Roku lists typical download-speed requirements of 3 Mbps for SD, 5 Mbps for HD, and 25 Mbps or more for 4K Ultra HD. These are typical figures, not a promise of smooth playback in every home; individual streaming apps may set their own requirements. A speed result alone also does not identify whether the Roku’s Wi-Fi signal, internet service, or network activity is causing the interruption.

Restart the Roku and network equipment
Use the restart sequence that matches what the connection test showed. Roku’s Wi-Fi improvement instructions say to unplug the Roku, router, and modem for about 15 seconds, then power them back on in this order: modem first, router second, Roku third. Wait for the modem and router to reconnect before testing playback again. See Roku’s Wi-Fi improvement instructions.
If the Roku reaches the router but has no internet access, Roku’s connection-check page separately advises unplugging the Roku and router for 30 seconds. Follow the instruction relevant to the symptom rather than treating the two durations as one universal rule.

Improve the Wi-Fi connection before changing router settings
A weak or obstructed wireless path can interrupt streaming even when other devices sometimes appear to work. Try these placement and traffic changes first:
- Move the Roku and router closer together where practical.
- Reduce obstacles between them, and avoid enclosing the Roku in a cabinet. If possible, do not leave the player hidden behind the TV.
- Keep the router away from potential interference sources such as cordless phones, microwaves, and baby monitors.
- Pause large downloads or other streaming on the home network while testing.
Retest the connection and playback after each change so you can tell whether it helped. Roku’s Wi-Fi guidance covers placement, interference, and competing network use.

Try Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi if your equipment supports it
Test 5 GHz Wi-Fi
If both your Roku and router support a 5 GHz network, try connecting to it. Availability and support depend on the device and router, so this is not an option for every setup. Roku’s connection guidance discusses 5 GHz as a possible connection mode.
Test a wired Ethernet connection
Roku describes Ethernet as more stable than Wi-Fi, but not every Roku model has an Ethernet port or supports a compatible adapter. Check your model’s connection options before buying a cable or adapter. If wired networking is supported, temporarily connecting the Roku to the router can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the weak link. Roku discusses wired connections in its connection-check article and Wi-Fi improvement article.

Change router channels only if simpler fixes do not work
If the connection remains intermittent and you are comfortable changing router settings, check whether the router is selecting a congested Wi-Fi channel. Roku says automatic channel selection can contribute to intermittent or slow connections. Its North American guidance names channels 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz and non-DFS 5 GHz channels 36–48 and 149–165. These recommendations are region- and equipment-dependent: available channels and DFS support vary by router, Roku model, and software. Consult your router maker or ISP if you are unsure, and avoid changing settings you cannot restore. See Roku’s advanced networking guidance.
Reset network settings or factory-reset only as a last resort
A network connection reset means reconnecting the Roku to Wi-Fi afterward. A factory reset is more disruptive: it erases device settings and requires setting up apps again. Try the less disruptive troubleshooting steps first. Roku’s connection-check article says, “In extreme cases, reset your Roku to factory defaults, but only after trying everything else.” Roku’s Wi-Fi improvement guidance covers resets and their consequences.
