Yes, you can route a Roku through a VPN, but Roku does not provide a direct VPN app installation. The documented workarounds are to configure a VPN on a compatible router or share a VPN-protected connection from a Windows PC. Neither method guarantees access to a particular streaming service, regional catalog, or title.
Why you can’t install a VPN app directly on Roku
Roku runs Roku OS, which NordVPN says its app does not support. NordVPN Support explains: “Roku is a streaming device that plugs into your TV. It runs on Roku OS, which is not supported by NordVPN, so you can’t install the NordVPN app on Roku.” That describes NordVPN’s Roku support; it does not establish that every VPN provider has identical app availability. Two ways to route Roku traffic through a VPN
With either approach, configure the VPN outside Roku itself. Roku then connects to a network whose traffic is routed through the VPN.

Option 1: Configure the VPN on a router
- Check the exact router model’s documentation to confirm that it supports VPN client mode. Verify that it is compatible with your VPN provider and that the provider supplies current setup instructions for that router.
- Configure the VPN on the router by following the provider’s instructions. Router interfaces and setup requirements vary, so do not assume that a router can run a VPN just because it provides Wi-Fi.
- Connect the Roku to that router’s Wi-Fi network. Roku’s setup guide also notes that some models have an Ethernet port, so a wired connection is an option where the model supports it: Roku device setup guidance.
Because the router may route traffic for every device using its network, consider the effect on other household devices before changing its configuration.
Option 2: Share a VPN connection from a Windows PC
NordVPN documents sharing a wireless VPN connection from a Windows PC as another way to connect Roku through a VPN. Configure the VPN connection and Windows connection sharing according to the provider’s and Microsoft’s current instructions, then connect Roku to the shared hotspot. Will a VPN unlock another country’s Roku content?
Do not assume that a VPN will make a particular app or title available. A VPN changes the network route and apparent IP address, but the sources cited here do not establish that either setup method reliably unlocks a specific streaming catalog. Availability can depend on the service, platform, account, subscription, and content rights.

- Confirm that the phone and Roku are connected to the same local network.
- If the app still cannot find the Roku, review the network and IP configuration using Roku’s troubleshooting guidance.
What to check before choosing a setup
- Router route: Confirm VPN client support and provider compatibility for the exact router model before buying or configuring it.
- Hotspot route: Confirm that the Windows PC can share the VPN-protected connection and can remain available while Roku uses it.
- Network scope: A VPN on the router may affect other devices on that network; a shared hotspot routes devices connected to that hotspot.
- Streaming expectations: Treat VPN routing as a network setup, not a promise of access to a specific region, app, or title.
