Why Is My Printer Printing Only One Page? How to Fix It

A one-page printout can come from a page-range selection, printer alert, stuck queue, connection, or software issue. Follow these checks to find the cause.

If your printer prints only the first page of a longer job, check the document’s page range and the printer’s alerts first. A one-page selection, a paused or stuck queue, a connection problem, or a driver or Windows print-spooler issue can all produce the same symptom. Work through the checks below in order; the result of a test page can help narrow down where the problem lies.

1. Confirm that the job includes all the pages

Before changing printer settings, open the document’s print preview and check how many pages are shown. In the print dialog, make sure the page range is set to print the whole document—not “Current page,” a selected page, or a custom range containing just one page. Also check that the document itself contains the expected pages.

If the preview or range contains only one page, correct the selection and print again. That points to the document or application’s job settings, not necessarily a printer fault.

2. Check the printer for a prompt or error

Look at the printer display and status lights. A printer may stop and wait for you to clear a paper jam, load paper, close a cover, or respond to another alert. Microsoft’s Windows printer troubleshooting guidance includes checking for low paper or ink, an open cover, and paper jams when a printer reports an error.

Follow the instruction shown on the printer, then resume or resend the job if needed. The printer’s panel can reveal a condition the computer’s print dialog does not make obvious.

3. Inspect the print queue

A later page may never reach the printer if the job is paused, stuck, or reporting an error in the computer’s queue. Cancel the stalled job, then try printing a short document with at least two pages. Epson advises Windows users to cancel stalled spooler jobs; on Mac, check that the printer appears in the printer list and is not paused in Epson’s “Nothing Prints” guidance.

If a new small job prints correctly, the original job may have been blocked or affected by its document, application, or settings. If it stops after the first page too, continue with the connection and test-page checks.

4. Verify the printer connection

USB connection

Check that the USB cable is firmly connected at both the printer and computer. If the printer is not consistently recognized, try another computer USB port. Consider a known-good, compatible cable only if these checks point to an intermittent or failed cable; replacing a cable is not a general fix for a one-page-only job.

Wi-Fi or network connection

Confirm that the printer is connected to the network and that the computer can reach it on the relevant network. A lost or unstable connection can interrupt a job after its first page. Microsoft and Epson both include connection checks in their printer troubleshooting guidance.

5. Print a test page to separate printer problems from document problems

Use the printer’s own product-check function, if available, or print an operating-system test page. Microsoft recommends a test page to help confirm printer operation, while Epson distinguishes a printer product check from print setup on the computer.

  • The test page also fails or stops: focus on printer status, paper handling, or the connection before troubleshooting a particular document.

6. Check print settings and the selected driver

Make sure the correct printer is selected and the full page range is still chosen. Then check settings that change how a job is laid out or delivered: copies, collation, multiple pages per sheet, and two-sided printing. These are separate options in Brother’s Windows driver settings guidance.

If expected settings are missing, the computer may be using a generic driver rather than the printer maker’s model-specific driver. Check the manufacturer’s support page for the correct driver and instructions for your printer and operating system; labels and menus can differ by model, driver, and OS version.

7. On Windows, use Brother’s direct-print check if the whole job still stops

For the specific symptom of a multi-page job printing only one page, Brother provides a Windows diagnostic that temporarily bypasses normal spooling. Its instructions use the exact setting label “Print Directly To The Printer.” The menu names in Brother’s article include older Windows versions, so the precise path may differ on a current PC.

  2. Select Print Directly To The Printer, apply the change, and retry a small multi-page document.
  3. If every page prints with direct printing, Brother says the spooler is likely involved. If the job still stops, the Windows print processor could be involved.

This is a diagnostic, not proof that a particular component has failed. Restore or adjust the setting in line with current Windows or administrator guidance after the test.

8. Reset the Windows print spooler only after simpler checks

If preview, printer status, queue, connection, and test-page checks have not resolved the issue, Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes restarting the Print Spooler and clearing its pending files. This removes queued spool files, so jobs in the queue may need to be submitted again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the Print Spooler service.
  2. Delete the files in %WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS.
  3. Start the Print Spooler service again.
  4. Retry the job. If the issue remains, update or reinstall the driver that matches the printer model and Windows version.

Use Microsoft’s current Windows printer troubleshooting steps for the service controls. The page covers Windows 10 and 11; for Windows 11, it presents the Get Help troubleshooter before a spooler reset.

9. Consider a print-speed pause only if the timing fits

If the printer has been printing continuously for a long time and then slows or pauses, a mechanism-protection pause may be relevant. Epson says some printers can slow during extended printing and advises leaving the printer powered on to rest for 30 minutes before retrying. This is model-specific guidance for sustained printing, not a default explanation when a job stops after its first page.

Use the symptom to choose your next check

  • Only one page appears in preview: correct the document or page selection.
  • The printer panel shows an alert or asks for input: address that condition before resending the job.
  • The queue is paused, stuck, or in error: cancel the stalled job and check printer connection and status.
  • A test page works but the document does not: investigate the application, job settings, or driver.
  • A Windows job works only with direct printing: the spooler is a likely area to investigate; if it also fails that way, Brother’s diagnostic says the print processor could be involved.
  • A USB printer appears and disappears: check the port and cable before considering a compatible replacement cable.

Menu paths and available tests vary by printer model and operating system. For model-specific instructions, use the printer maker’s support page; Microsoft’s general guidance applies to Windows, while Epson’s “Nothing Prints” article includes Windows and Mac checks.
