Yes—ChatGPT dots can keep working between conversations because each has its own cloud computer. You can give a dot an ongoing goal, schedule reminders or recurring checks, and let it review information from apps you have connected and authorized. That does not mean it can take every action unattended: some actions require approval or your direct involvement, and access depends on your plan, region, and—in some workspaces—administrator settings.
What a ChatGPT dot does when you leave
OpenAI describes a dot as an always-on ChatGPT agent that can take on ongoing responsibility and make progress between conversations. A dot can work toward a goal you provide, run scheduled checks, and proactively review permitted information from connected sources. It can save private notes from that research and surface updates in its conversation.

The cloud computer is what makes ordinary background work possible without keeping your own computer running. Connecting a personal computer is an optional, separately configured path—not a requirement for a dot to continue cloud-based work.

Ongoing goals and research
You can ask a dot to research a subject or keep track of an ongoing area. It may also review information from connected sources it is allowed to access, even when you have not sent a new message. What it can see depends on the permissions granted to the dot and the connected service.

Reminders and recurring checks
You can schedule reminders or recurring tasks. Scheduled runs and proactive updates appear in the dot’s conversation, where you can review active, paused, and completed work or pause the dot.
Research is not the same as taking action
OpenAI’s safety guidance draws a line between proactive research and acting on your behalf. Research can read permitted connected information and save notes, but its research tools cannot directly message other people, modify content through plugins, or control a browser or computer. Who can use dots, and where can you create one?
Availability below reflects OpenAI’s documentation checked on October 3, 2026. The rollout is gradual, so eligible accounts may not receive access at the same time.

Create a dot in the ChatGPT desktop app or on desktop web. OpenAI says you cannot currently create one on mobile, and dots are not supported on mobile web. You may be able to talk to a dot in the mobile app once mobile access is available. Set up messaging channels such as Slack or texting from desktop.
Does the dot need your computer to stay on?
No, not for ordinary cloud-based work. A dot has its own cloud computer, and local-computer access starts disabled. If you choose to connect a computer, you must enable that access and explicitly allow it through the desktop app.

There is an important difference for workspace users: OpenAI’s workspace guidance says a member using local-computer access must keep that computer online and the ChatGPT app open. A dot can still use its cloud computer where the relevant cloud capabilities are enabled. An administrator’s settings and local-device policies can therefore affect which work continues. Permissions, approvals, and mistakes
A dot does not automatically gain access to every app or website. Connected-app permissions, the service’s own authorization, workspace plugin controls, and administrator settings determine what it can access and when approval is needed. Workspace administrators can separately control dot access, Slack or Teams use, local-computer access, custom rules, and cloud browser, network, and computer capabilities.

Some sensitive work requires your involvement. OpenAI says actions such as changing a password or transferring money require you to complete the action yourself. Permanently deleting data or installing software may require approval each time, and any advance approval applies only to what you specifically authorized. Review consequential work: OpenAI warns that dots can make mistakes.
What happens to a dot’s context and connected data?
OpenAI says a dot may retain context from its conversations and plugins for as long as the dot exists. Deleting the dot deletes its own context, but files and conversations stored separately may remain. Disconnecting an app stops future access; it does not erase information the dot has already incorporated into its context.
For personal plans, the “Improve the model for everyone” setting controls whether eligible dot conversations and work may be used to improve models. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu data is not used to train models by default. For details, see the privacy and safety FAQs.

Dots are not the same thing as ChatGPT Work scheduled tasks
OpenAI’s release notes describe related capabilities under ChatGPT Work, but they are separate product concepts. The July 9, 2026 Business release notes describe Work as an agent for longer tasks involving research, connected apps and files, deliverables, and scheduled tasks. The August 25, 2026 release notes describe webhook-triggered tasks for Gmail messages, Slack channel messages, and GitHub pull request activity, as well as task sharing and approval pauses for consequential actions. Those Work features should not be assumed to be the same as a dot’s proactive research or scheduled tasks. See the ChatGPT Business release notes and ChatGPT release notes.
