Facebook may not show the image you expect if the shared page has a missing or incorrect og:image, Facebook cannot fetch or process the image, or Facebook is displaying an older scrape. Check the exact URL you share, inspect its live metadata and image URL, then use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to review and refresh the scrape.
How to troubleshoot a missing Facebook preview image
-
Check the exact page URL
Test the URL people actually share, including any redirect or canonical URL. Open Graph’s
og:urlidentifies the canonical object URL, so confirm the shared page’s metadata describes the page and image you intend Facebook to show. See the Open Graph protocol. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
-
Inspect the live
og:imagetagA visible featured image on the page is not automatically the social preview image. The page needs an
og:imageproperty in its head metadata, and its value should be the URL of the intended image. What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Make sure Facebook can fetch the image
Check the image URL itself. It should be reachable without a login or other access restriction, and the image must be processable. A working page does not guarantee its image resource is accessible to Facebook.

-
Check for duplicate or conflicting tags
Templates and plugins can output more than one
og:image. Open Graph allows multiple values, but when values conflict, the first tag in the document receives preference. Inspect the page source from top to bottom and remove or correct an earlier tag that points to the wrong image. Structured properties should follow the image tag they describe. See the protocol’s image properties. -
Inspect and refresh Facebook’s scrape
Enter the exact shared page URL in Facebook’s Sharing Debugger. Review the metadata and image Facebook reports, correct any page or image problem, and request a fresh scrape. A general metadata checker can help confirm that tags exist; Facebook’s debugger is the relevant tool for inspecting and refreshing Facebook’s scrape.
-
If the image alone is still old, change its URL
Page metadata and the image file can present separate caching problems. If the debugger shows correct metadata but continues to surface an old image, publish the replacement image at a changed URL and request another scrape. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee of a particular cache lifetime.

What Open Graph metadata should the page contain?
The protocol identifies four required properties: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Put them in the page’s <head>. For example:

Do image dimensions explain the missing preview?
Do not assume one dimension or size threshold is a universal current Meta requirement. Recommendations differ, and a current official threshold is not established here. Use the Sharing Debugger’s output and current Meta guidance to diagnose the specific URL and image.
