Choose the right caption workflow

There is no like-for-like independent accuracy benchmark establishing that one of these tools is more accurate than the others. Choose based on your editing workflow and required deliverable, then review the output yourself.

Before generating: prepare the audio and decide what you need
- Check the language. Select the language actually spoken in the recording. Supported languages differ by tool, and simultaneous languages can complicate recognition.
- Use the clearest available audio. Background noise, low volume, long silences, overlapping speakers, and unclear speech can make captions inaccurate or prevent them from appearing. If you are recording future footage, clearer source audio may help; you do not need a new microphone to caption a video you already have.
- Know the delivery format. A native caption track can be switched on or off by viewers; burned-in captions are part of the picture; an editable caption track or subtitle file may suit further editing. Confirm that your current app version supports the format you need before you begin.
- Leave time to proofread. Prioritize names, numbers, specialist vocabulary, punctuation, speaker changes, and caption timing. Automated recognition can mishear accents, dialects, and mispronunciations.
Add captions to an uploaded video in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Subtitles and select the video.
- When automatic captions are available, review the generated text. Select the caption track to correct transcription errors and timing, or remove text that is wrong.
- Save or publish the corrected captions using the available controls for that video.
Captions may not be ready immediately after upload. YouTube says processing time depends on audio complexity. If captions do not appear, check the spoken language and the audio for poor sound, long silence, overlapping speech, or multiple languages at once. YouTube’s supported-language list is finite, so confirm that the language is supported in its current help page: Automatic captions on YouTube.

For a YouTube live stream
YouTube’s automatic live-caption availability is more limited than its uploaded-video workflow. Its help page describes automatic live captions as English-only and subject to conditions including normal latency, no professional captions, rollout availability, and channel-level constraints. Live captions do not remain when the stream ends; YouTube creates new automatic captions for the video-on-demand version. Check YouTube’s current eligibility and availability guidance before relying on live captions, since rollout conditions can change.

Caption a short clip in YouTube Create
- Open the project in YouTube Create and tap Captions.
- Choose All videos to caption detected speech in the original recording, or Voiceover for voiceover recorded in the app.
- Select the voiceover language if applicable, then tap Generate.
- Select a generated caption layer to correct its words. Use Style to adjust size, font, color, background, outline, or shadow.
- Review the full clip, including the start and end of each caption, before using the project.
YouTube Create’s caption feature cannot generate captions for clips longer than 60 seconds. YouTube currently lists Android phones with at least 4 GB of RAM and iPhone XR or later running iOS 17 or later as supported device requirements. Availability and interface details can change; consult YouTube Create’s current help.
Create caption tracks in Adobe Premiere Pro
- At import: select Automatic Transcription during import and choose the transcription language and audio source. Depending on the workflow, you can also select speaker labeling and download a language pack if prompted.
- For media already in the project: open the Captions workspace and choose Create captions from transcript.
- Set the caption preset and format, then adjust caption length, duration, and gaps to suit the project.
- Generate the timecoded caption track and inspect its text and timing against the footage.
- If needed, create additional translated caption tracks in supported languages, then review each translation and apply the desired styling.
- Check the captions again before export.
Premiere’s transcription language and translation options depend on its supported languages and installed language resources. Adobe’s guidance recommends checking generated captions for accuracy before export. See Adobe’s Speech to Text workflow and Adobe’s caption and translation tutorial.

Generate captions in CapCut
- Open or import the video project in CapCut.
- Choose Auto captions and select the source language.
- Generate captions, then edit any incorrect words and adjust timing and style as needed.
- Export using the option that matches your project. CapCut’s desktop product workflow documents exporting a rendered video; confirm the available caption-file or video options in your current version if you need a particular deliverable.
CapCut documents this core workflow across web, desktop, and mobile. Speaker differentiation, punctuation refinement, and batch SRT export may depend on platform, region, and app version. A separate bilingual-caption workflow lets you choose a recognition language and a target translation language; check both the transcript and translation before use. - Listen while reading. Correct words that sound plausible but do not match the audio, especially names, places, acronyms, and numbers.
- Check speaker changes. Make sure captions do not attribute speech to the wrong person or combine overlapping dialogue into a misleading line.
- Check timing. Captions should appear with the speech and remain long enough to read. Correct early or late starts, gaps, and text that runs into the next speaker’s line.
- Check presentation. Confirm the text is legible against the image and does not cover important visual content. Styling controls differ by editor.
- Check translation separately. A translated track is not proof that the original transcript is correct. Review the translated wording for meaning and clarity.
- Watch the exported or published version. Confirm the captions appear as intended in the final destination, not only in the editing interface.
Common problems and fixes

Copyright and publishing considerations
Captions do not grant permission to use copyrighted video or music. Before publishing, make sure you have the rights needed for the footage, soundtrack, and any material included in the video. Also ensure the captions represent the actual audio: inaccurate captions can mislead viewers even when the video itself is permitted. YouTube recommends reviewing and editing automatic captions rather than treating them as final.
