Use 16:9 for a regular widescreen YouTube video and 9:16 for the familiar full-screen vertical Shorts look. In your editor, set the project or sequence to the target ratio, then crop and reposition the footage—or fit the entire image and fill the extra space with a background. Cropping can cut off important details, so inspect the whole video after reframing.
Choose the right aspect ratio
Aspect ratio describes a frame’s width relative to its height. It is different from resolution, which describes the number of pixels in the frame. A 16:9 frame is widescreen; 9:16 is vertical. A clip can have the right ratio but still have a different resolution, and pixel-aspect settings can affect how an editor interprets some footage.

- Regular YouTube upload: 16:9 is the standard aspect ratio for YouTube’s computer player. YouTube’s player adapts to videos with other ratios and to viewer devices, so a non-16:9 video can still play. YouTube Help advises against adding black bars or padding directly into the video. YouTube Help: Video resolution and aspect ratios.
- Vertical Short: 9:16 is the common phone-filling vertical format. CapCut describes 1080 × 1920 pixels as an ideal Shorts size; that is CapCut’s recommendation, not a YouTube requirement. CapCut’s YouTube Shorts size guide.
- Shorts classification: YouTube Help says that, for standard channels, square or vertical videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, and no longer than three minutes, are categorized as Shorts. So 9:16 is not the only eligible shape. YouTube notes different dates for Official Artist Channels; check the current guidance for channel-specific rules. YouTube Help: Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts.
Adobe lists 1920 × 1080 pixels as a 16:9 HD example. Match export dimensions to the frame you have chosen and the quality of your source footage; neither example dimension is a universal requirement for every upload. Adobe Premiere Help: Aspect ratios.
Pick how the footage should fit the new frame
Changing the canvas shape does not create image area that was never recorded. A wide shot cannot fill a tall frame edge to edge while preserving every part of the original picture at its original size. Choose the treatment based on what matters in each shot.

| Method | What it preserves | Trade-off | Best fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crop and fill | A large, screen-filling subject | Parts of the original frame are cut off; repositioning may be needed as the subject moves. | The subject stays within a crop and immersive full-frame presentation matters most. |
| Fit the full image | The complete original picture | Unused canvas may remain around the image, which can look like empty space or bars. | Nothing at the edges can be lost and a smaller image within the frame is acceptable. |
| Fit with a background | The complete original picture, with the extra canvas filled by a solid color, blur, or custom visual | The video image may appear smaller than a cropped version. | You want to keep all the footage visible without leaving plain empty space. |
| Auto Reframe | A moving crop that attempts to follow the subject | It can miss a subject or important edge detail and still needs human review. | You want a starting point for reframing moving footage rather than adjusting every shot from scratch. |
YouTube may add padding to vertical videos in computer browsers and adapts its player to the video and device. Avoid baking bars into a standard upload unless you have a specific design reason. YouTube Help: Video resolution and aspect ratios.
Change the aspect ratio in your editor
The exact controls vary by app and version. The important order is the same: select the target frame, choose how to fit the footage, then inspect the result shot by shot.

- Choose the sequence you want to convert in the Project panel.
- Right-click it and select Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence.
- Choose the target aspect ratio, such as 9:16 for a vertical Short. Adobe documents different tracking behavior for slower motion, such as a talking head, and faster movement, such as sports.
- Review the reframed sequence and manually adjust any shots where the subject or important content is not kept in view.
Adobe says a sequence’s aspect ratio can be changed even though the project’s original frame and pixel-aspect settings are established when it is created. If footage looks unexpectedly stretched or interpreted incorrectly, check its pixel-aspect interpretation as well as the sequence frame ratio. Other editors or an online resizer
Look for project, sequence, canvas, or aspect-ratio controls. Set the output to 16:9 or 9:16 before adjusting the clip. If the editor offers a background or canvas-fill control, use it to fill unused space while keeping the complete source image visible. CapCut’s online resizer documents preset canvases, previews, background treatments, and output settings. CapCut online video resizer.
Reframe carefully, then export and inspect
- Set the destination frame. Choose 16:9 for a regular widescreen upload or 9:16 for a vertical Short. Use the sequence or canvas setting, not a non-proportional stretch of the clip.
- Choose crop, fit, or background fill. If cropping, enlarge and reposition the shot until it fills the frame. If the crop removes something important, fit the whole image and use a suitable background treatment instead.
- Check every shot. Watch for faces, hands, text, products, and action near the original frame edges. Follow the subject through movement; a crop that works at the start may lose the subject later.
- Use auto-reframing as a first pass. Correct missed subjects and edge details manually. A moving crop is an aid, not a guarantee of good composition.
- Export to the selected canvas dimensions. For reference, Adobe’s 16:9 HD example is 1920 × 1080 pixels. CapCut’s stated ideal Shorts size is 1080 × 1920 pixels. Preserve a suitable source and editing workflow rather than assuming one frame rate or codec is right for every video.
- Watch the rendered file. Preview it at phone size for a Short and in the intended player for a regular upload. Confirm the subject stays visible, text remains readable, the image is not stretched, and no unwanted bars have been introduced.
Fix common aspect-ratio problems
- The subject is cut off: the crop is too tight or positioned poorly. Scale the footage down, reposition it, or switch to fitting the full image with a background.
- The subject disappears as the shot moves: a static crop no longer follows the action. Adjust the framing over time or use auto-reframe as a starting point, then correct the tracking manually.
- The video has empty bands or bars: fitting the complete source into a different frame leaves unused canvas. Use a designed background if appropriate. For standard YouTube uploads, do not bake in bars merely to force a particular player shape.
- The picture looks stretched: the clip may have been resized non-proportionally, or its pixel aspect may be interpreted incorrectly. Restore proportional scaling and check the source’s pixel-aspect interpretation.
- Text or objects at the edges are hard to read: the crop may be unsuitable for the source composition. Keep the whole image visible or reposition the clip; inspect the rendered version at the size viewers will use.
- The exported frame does not match the editor: check that the sequence or canvas ratio and export dimensions agree, then preview the rendered file again before uploading.
