What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The best screen recorder with overlays depends on what you mean by “overlay.” For flexible live scene composition—such as placing a webcam, text, or images over a screen—start with free, open-source OBS Studio. For a quick screen-and-camera message with hosted sharing, consider Loom. For Mac tutorial editing and annotations, consider ScreenFlow; for capture paired with instructional editing tools, consider Camtasia. These are matches to vendor-documented features, not results of hands-on comparison.
What counts as an overlay?
“Overlay” can describe several different jobs, and a recorder that handles one may not suit another:

- Webcam picture-in-picture: a camera image sits over the screen recording while you explain what is happening.
- Text and graphics: labels, logos, images, or other visual sources appear over the screen, either while recording or during editing.
- Annotations: you draw, point, or add emphasis to explain part of the screen.
- Camera styling: a frame or background changes how the webcam image appears.
Choose based on the overlay type, how much editing you need, where you want to share the finished video, and your operating system—not on the word “overlay” alone.
Best options by workflow
OBS Studio — flexible scene composition
OBS Studio is free and open-source software for recording and streaming on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its scenes can combine sources such as window captures, webcams, images, text, browser windows, and capture cards. It also lists unlimited scenes, custom transitions, per-source audio filters, hotkeys, Studio Mode previews, Multiview, plugins, and Lua or Python scripting.
#1 Best Overall

How to choose
- You need a webcam, labels, or graphics composed from several live sources: look first at OBS’s scene-and-source model.
- You want to record a screen-and-camera message and share a link: Loom documents that combined capture and hosted sharing flow.
- You work on a Mac and need annotations, animation, and editing: compare ScreenFlow’s listed tutorial and publishing features with your export needs.
- You want capture alongside tutorial-focused post-production: compare Camtasia’s camera, system-audio, cursor, and editing features.
- You are choosing by price or plan limits: check the vendor’s current terms directly. Loom’s stated Starter limit and trial terms, and ScreenFlow’s displayed starting price, are mutable product-page details.
An external webcam or microphone is optional, not a requirement. Loom documents screen-and-camera recording, and Camtasia lists built-in or external camera and microphone capture; use built-in equipment if it meets your needs.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a different task—keeping a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than recording your screen—StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploads, not a live camera feed. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Try StreamNeo’s free first day.
