A new refrigerator may hum, click, gurgle, or crack as its compressor, fans, refrigerant lines, and defrost system operate. Those sounds can be normal, but the sound alone cannot confirm that your refrigerator is working properly. Check whether the noise is brief or persistent, whether the appliance is stable and clear of nearby surfaces, and whether it is cooling normally.
What different refrigerator noises can mean
Sound descriptions are clues, not diagnoses. The cause depends on the model, when the noise happens, where it seems to come from, and whether cooling is normal. Samsung notes that a refrigerator is not completely quiet, even when new; that general guidance is not a guarantee about every sound or model.

Check the simple, external causes first
- Note the timing. Record a short audio or video clip if useful, and note whether the sound is continuous, occurs during cooling cycles, follows a door opening, happens during ice-making, or appears during defrost. This can help you describe the problem to a service team; it does not diagnose the cause by itself.
- Look for contact or vibration. Make sure packaging, containers, and nearby objects are not touching or rattling against the refrigerator. Check the clearance from walls and cabinetry against the installation instructions for your model.
- Check stability and level. The refrigerator should stand firmly on the floor. Follow its installation guide for leveling-leg adjustments. A bubble level can help check level, but is optional and does not replace the model’s instructions.
- Check the ice-maker setup. If the ice maker is not connected to a water line, use the model manual to find out whether and how to turn it off. Do not guess at controls or alter plumbing based on a sound alone.
- Escalate ongoing or concerning noise. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance service provider if the sound remains unusually loud or persistent, seems to come from an internal fan or compressor, or occurs alongside poor cooling.
When should you contact service?
A brief operating sound with normal cooling and no obvious vibration or contact may be part of ordinary operation. Get the refrigerator assessed if the noise is persistently unusual or very loud, if cooling is impaired, or if external checks do not resolve a rattle. Manufacturer guidance cannot diagnose an individual unit remotely, so do not infer a failed component from a sound label alone.

Use model-specific guidance for the final check
Manufacturer troubleshooting advice varies by model and product generation. Consult the refrigerator’s installation and owner’s manuals, then contact the manufacturer if the instructions do not address the sound. For reference, LG USA Support describes common operating noises, while Samsung US support explains that refrigerators are not completely silent. Treat these as general guidance, not a universal noise limit or a diagnosis for your appliance.
