French-Door vs. Side-by-Side Refrigerators: Which Is Right for You?

French-door models offer broad upper fresh-food storage; side-by-sides provide narrow door swing and eye-level access to some frozen food. Fit and model details decide the better choice.

French-door refrigerators are usually the better fit if you want a broad, easy-to-reach fresh-food compartment; side-by-side models are a better fit if narrow door swing and eye-level access to some frozen food matter more. The deciding questions are whether each layout fits your kitchen and whether its shelves and freezer can hold the foods you actually store. Neither style is automatically more energy-efficient: compare the exact models.

How the two layouts change everyday access

What matters French-door Side-by-side
Layout Two fresh-food doors above a lower freezer drawer. Fresh-food and freezer compartments sit beside each other vertically.
Door swing Two narrower fresh-food doors need less swing space than one wide door. Narrow doors can be useful where a kitchen is tight.
Fresh-food access A wide upper compartment makes it easier to arrange broad shelves and larger dishes. Some fresh food is at eye level, but each compartment is narrower.
Freezer access The lower drawer pulls out, so access involves bending and needs clearance in front. Some frozen items are at eye level, reducing the need to bend for them.
Wide frozen items Check drawer and shelf dimensions for your largest items. The narrow freezer can make wide items, such as frozen pizza boxes, difficult to fit.
Energy use Depends on the model and its size; do not assume category-wide superiority. Also depends on the model and size; compare model-specific energy information.
Feature tradeoffs Features vary by model. Many models offer icemakers or water dispensers, but features and reliability vary.

Consumer Reports refrigerator tester Breann Chai notes that side-by-sides put some fresh food and frozen items at eye level, so you may bend less than with a top- or bottom-freezer layout. That access benefit comes with the narrower freezer compartment, which can make wide packages awkward to store. Consumer Reports’ refrigerator guide discusses these category-level differences.

Which refrigerator is better for a small kitchen?

Either layout can work in a compact kitchen, but the relevant measurement is not just the refrigerator’s listed width. Side-by-side models have narrow doors, while the two doors of a French-door refrigerator need less swing space than one wide door. A French-door model still needs room for both doors to open, and its lower freezer drawer needs space to pull out.

Consumer Reports lists category widths of 28–37 inches for French-door refrigerators and 33–36 inches for side-by-side models. These are broad category ranges, not dimensions for a particular unit. The same guide lists capacities up to 31 cubic feet for French-door models and up to 29 cubic feet for side-by-sides; listed capacity does not establish how conveniently a specific model’s interior will hold your groceries.

Measure the whole installation, not just the opening

  1. Measure the width, height, and depth of the intended space, including any cabinets or counters that could interfere with the doors.
  2. Check the chosen model’s installation manual for required ventilation clearance; there is no single clearance figure that applies to every refrigerator.
  3. Confirm the doors can open far enough beside nearby walls, cabinets, or an island, and that the freezer drawer can pull out fully.
  4. Measure the delivery route through entrances, hallways, and turns. A refrigerator that fits the kitchen opening may still be difficult to bring into the home.

Use the exact model’s specifications and installation documentation for final measurements rather than relying on category averages.

Will a side-by-side fit a pizza box?

Possibly, but do not assume it will. Side-by-side freezers are narrow enough that a wide frozen pizza box may not fit flat or may be difficult to place. Measure the largest frozen package, baking dish, or container you regularly store, then compare it with the usable shelf and compartment dimensions for the model. A French-door freezer drawer may accommodate broader items, but its usable space also varies by model.

Which layout makes sense for your food habits?

Choose French-door if fresh-food space is your priority

  • You want a broad fresh-food area for wide dishes, trays, or large containers.
  • Your household opens the refrigerator more often than the freezer.
  • You are comfortable reaching into a lower pull-out freezer and have room for its drawer to extend.

Choose side-by-side if narrow doors and vertical access matter more

  • Your kitchen layout makes wide door swing inconvenient.
  • You want some frozen food at eye level as well as fresh food.
  • Your usual frozen items fit comfortably in a narrower compartment.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 member survey reporting says 56 percent of members who purchased a refrigerator bought a French-door model, compared with 16 percent who bought a side-by-side. Those figures describe Consumer Reports members, not national market shares, and do not show which layout is best for a particular household.

Which refrigerator uses less electricity?

There is no reliable category-level rule that makes every French-door refrigerator more or less efficient than every side-by-side. Size matters: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR guidance says larger refrigerators generally use more energy and that the most energy-efficient refrigerators are typically 16–20 cubic feet. ENERGY STAR also says top-freezer models tend to use the least energy compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side models. That general comparison does not establish a winner between the French-door and side-by-side finalists in your shopping list.

Compare the exact models’ annual energy-use information and ENERGY STAR certification rather than using door layout as a substitute. Certification is available for both French-door and side-by-side designs. See ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator guidance for its sizing and efficiency recommendations.

Are icemakers and dispensers worth considering?

Features such as an icemaker or external water dispenser can be convenient, but they are model-specific tradeoffs rather than a reason to choose one layout on its own. Consumer Reports reports that 31 percent of refrigerators with icemakers in its member survey had an icemaker problem by the end of their fifth year. The survey included more than 71,500 new refrigerators purchased between 2015 and 2025; this result is a survey finding, not a prediction about an individual refrigerator.

Before choosing a model, decide whether you will use the dispenser or icemaker enough to value the convenience, then review the exact model’s feature details and reliability information. Consumer Reports’ category guidance also notes that French-door models tend to cost more to run and may offer less actual storage than claimed capacity suggests; treat those as tendencies, not guarantees for every model.

Quick Recap

A final checklist before you buy

  • Confirm exact exterior dimensions, door-opening room, drawer clearance, ventilation requirements, and delivery access.
  • Compare usable shelf, bin, and freezer space—not just headline capacity—and check that your largest dishes and frozen items fit.
  • Match the access pattern to your household: broad upper fresh-food storage and a lower freezer drawer, or narrower vertical compartments with some food at eye level.
  • Compare model-specific annual energy use and certification.
  • Decide whether an icemaker or dispenser is worth the feature tradeoff for your household.
