Start by grinding finer, then check the dose and puck preparation before assuming the machine is faulty. Breville’s specific dose and timing figures vary by model, so use your machine’s manual for its settings.
What a watery shot tells you
On the BES870 Barista Express, Breville describes an under-extracted shot as flowing fast, with thin, pale crema and pale-brown color; it may taste weak or watery. That combination makes grind, dose, and puck preparation the first things to check—not a failed pump.

Consider flow and taste together. A shot that is pale and fast is a more useful clue than a wet puck by itself. The BES870 manual directs users with a wet puck to review its under-extraction guidance; a wet puck alone does not prove a machine fault.

Watch the flow
Note whether the shot starts quickly, runs in a thin stream, and looks pale. These signs fit the fast-flow under-extraction pattern in Breville’s BES870 Barista Express manual.

Grind a little finer
Make a small adjustment using the grinder controls described in your model’s manual, then pull another shot. Breville advises grinding finer to slow a shot that flows too quickly. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what affected the result.

Check the basket and dose
Use the basket intended for your shot and confirm that the dose suits your model. For the BES870, Breville’s balanced-extraction guide lists 8–11 g for a single basket and 16–19 g for a double basket. These are BES870 figures, not universal settings for every Breville machine.

Make puck preparation consistent
Distribute the grounds evenly, then tamp straight down without tilting. Uneven distribution or an uneven tamp can contribute to channeling, where water finds an easier path through the puck. Do not make tamping harder the main fix for a fast shot; first address grind and dose.

Measure a repeatable shot
A scale helps keep dose and yield consistent while you adjust. Breville’s espresso recipe gives a starting double-shot example of 19 g of coffee in and 38 g of liquid coffee out in 20–30 seconds. The BES870 manual separately lists 25–30 seconds for its balanced-extraction guide. These figures come from different Breville guidance; follow the recipe and manual for your machine rather than treating either time as a universal rule.

Rinse the basket
After extraction, rinse the filter basket and flush hot water through the empty portafilter basket, as the BES870 manual recommends. A watery-tasting shot alone is not a reason to begin backflushing or descaling; use your model’s maintenance instructions or look for a separate symptom that calls for those steps.
If the shot becomes too slow
Dripping or very slow flow is a different problem from a fast, watery shot. Breville says slow flow may mean the grind is too fine or the dose is too high. Depending on your model and recipe, try a slightly coarser grind or reduce the dose, changing one variable before retesting. Breville’s troubleshooting guidance is available in Espresso machine problems and fixes.

When to contact Breville
If flow remains abnormal after you have controlled grind, dose, basket choice, and puck preparation, check the manual for your exact model and confirm its warranty status before seeking service. The Barista Express support page provides model-related troubleshooting and support resources. Do not assume a replacement part is needed based on a watery shot alone.
