Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your Android phone says “No SD card” or “SD card not inserted,” first check that your exact phone model supports microSD. Then check Storage settings, safely reseat the card, and test it in another compatible device. These checks help distinguish a card or compatibility problem from an issue with the phone. Don’t format the card until you’ve backed up any files you need: formatting permanently deletes its contents.
Start with compatibility and Storage settings
Check whether your model supports microSD
Not every Android phone accepts a memory card. Support, card type, and maximum capacity depend on the exact device model. Check the phone’s manual or official specifications before assuming the slot is broken or buying a replacement card. Samsung likewise cautions that card support varies by model: Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting guidance.

See whether Settings detects the card
Open your phone’s Storage settings and look for the card. The menu wording and location vary by manufacturer and Android version. If Settings recognizes the card but a file app does not, the card may be configured as internal storage rather than portable storage. Google notes that Files by Google may not show a card set up as internal storage: Google Files Help: Troubleshoot an SD card undetected issue.
Safely remove, inspect, and reseat the card
- Unmount it if the option is available. Use the Storage settings to unmount the card before removing it.
- Power down and follow the manual. Turn off the phone as directed by its manufacturer, then eject the tray using the model’s instructions.
- Inspect and clean gently. Look for visible damage or debris. Wipe the card surface gently with a soft cloth. Don’t scrape the contacts or push tools into the slot.
- Seat it correctly and restart. Reinsert the card in the tray as shown in the manual, then start the phone and check Storage settings again.
Samsung recommends removing, inspecting, gently cleaning, and reinserting the card as part of its troubleshooting guidance: Samsung’s SD-card use and troubleshooting guidance.

Test the card in another compatible device
Try the card in another compatible phone or in a computer with a card reader. A computer may recognize the card even if its file system is not supported by Android, so use this test to see whether the card is detected—not to assume that every file will be readable.
- The other device detects it: Copy important files somewhere safe before trying further fixes. The original phone, its slot, or its software is more likely to need attention.
- The other device also fails to detect it: The card may be damaged. If it contains the only copy of valuable files, don’t format it; consider your data-preservation options before replacing it.
Samsung recommends testing the card in another device before formatting and says a card that remains unrecognized may need replacement: Samsung Support: Issues with SD cards on Samsung phone or tablet.

Try low-risk software checks
- Restart the phone and install any available device software updates.
- Try Safe mode if your phone supports it. If the card works in Safe mode, a third-party app may be involved; consider whether a recently installed or suspicious app is affecting detection.
Safe mode steps and update menus are device-specific. Follow the phone manufacturer’s support instructions for your model. Samsung includes software updates and Safe mode among its suggested checks: Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting guidance.

Android supports two SD-card setups. Portable storage is for files such as photos and videos; the card can be moved between devices, but it can’t install apps. Internal storage can hold files and apps, but Android treats the card as part of that device’s storage, so it can’t be moved to another device as a normal portable card. Google explains these choices in Get started with an SD card.

Choose the next step based on what the tests show
- Settings sees the card but a file app doesn’t: Check whether it was set up as internal storage; the difference in visibility may be expected.
- The card fails in more than one compatible device: It may be damaged. Replace it only after considering whether you need to preserve files that are not backed up.
- The card works elsewhere but not in this phone: Continue with the phone’s model-specific software guidance. If a known-good, compatible card also fails, contact the manufacturer or a service center.
- You have a backup and have decided the files on the card are not needed: Formatting may be a last troubleshooting step. If the phone cannot format the card, Samsung points to the SD Association Memory Card Formatter for PC or Mac: Samsung Support’s SD-card troubleshooting steps.
