iOS 27 downloads can take longer when the update is large or your internet connection is slow. Apple recommends using Wi-Fi and avoiding other downloads while the update runs. A slow progress indicator alone does not mean the update has failed, and Apple has not published a fixed download-time estimate for iOS 27.
Why an iOS 27 download may be slow
- Internet speed and competing traffic: Apple says download time depends on update size and internet speed. Other downloads using the same connection can compete for bandwidth, so pause them while iOS downloads. See Apple’s update troubleshooting guidance.
- Update size: Apple identifies size as a factor, but the sources cited here do not establish a specific iOS 27 file size.
- Release-period demand: The Apple Post reported that simultaneous requests to Apple’s update infrastructure could slow downloads around rollout. That is a possible release-period factor, not an official diagnosis for your iPhone. The Apple Post’s report was available as a search-result snippet.
- Storage, server access, or an incomplete update file: Apple lists insufficient storage, trouble reaching the update server, and an incomplete update among reasons an update may not succeed.
- VPN or proxy connections: Apple says these connections might prevent a device from contacting update servers. This is relevant when the phone cannot connect or verify an update; it does not establish that a VPN is behind every slow transfer. See Apple’s instructions for updating an iPhone or iPad.
Is the iPhone update stuck?
Not necessarily. Download time varies with the update size and your internet speed, and Apple says you can continue using the iPhone while an update downloads. A slow-moving progress display by itself is not proof of failure. No fixed number of minutes or hours is established as normal for iOS 27, so judge the situation by whether the download is progressing and whether the phone reports an error—not by an unsupported time threshold.

Keep download time separate from installation time: the transfer depends on the network and update size, while the later installation is a different stage. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance cautions against treating a slow progress bar alone as failure.

What to do when iOS 27 is taking too long
- Check the connection and storage. Confirm the iPhone is online and has enough available storage. If an alert says the update server cannot be reached, retry the connection; if the alert persists, try another network.
- Use Wi-Fi and pause other downloads. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network and stop downloading other content while iOS is updating. Apple says download time depends on update size and internet speed.
- Connect the iPhone to power and back it up. Apple recommends plugging in the device and backing it up before a wireless update. These steps help prepare the phone; a charger will not increase internet speed.
- Retry using a different network if needed. If the server or connection alert continues, try again on the current network, then switch to another. Apple does not guarantee that a particular network will download faster.
- Delete and redownload an update file that fails. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, find the downloaded iOS update, and delete it. Then go to Settings > General > Software Update and download it again. Labels can vary by software version.
- Use a computer if wireless updating keeps failing. Apple documents updating with a Mac or iTunes. Follow Apple’s computer-update instructions; the available route depends on your computer and setup.
What Apple has—and has not—said about iOS 27 download times
Apple’s published guidance is that download time depends on update size and internet speed. The sources cited here do not give an iOS 27 file size, a typical completion time, or a guaranteed wait threshold. The Mac Observer likewise reports that Apple has not published a specific iOS 27 download time or size: The Mac Observer’s coverage. Treat online estimates as estimates, not Apple-published expectations.
