Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFortnite can take three hours for two very different reasons: the update is downloading slowly, or the launcher has already downloaded data and is spending the time verifying, decompressing, installing, and rearranging files. Before changing internet settings, compare network activity with disk activity. High disk use with little network traffic usually means legitimate patching; low activity on both usually indicates a stalled launcher, connection, storage, or server problem.
What a “three-hour update” actually includes
The progress display may combine several stages:
- Checking: contacting Epic or the console platform.
- Downloading: receiving compressed update data.
- Verifying: checking existing files.
- Installing or patching: writing, replacing, decompressing, or reorganizing files.
- Finalizing: preparing the game to launch.
The displayed gigabytes may describe data to download, data being processed, or an estimate that changes during installation. A major seasonal release can be much larger than a routine hotfix, but a large figure does not automatically mean Fortnite is downloading the entire game.

First, identify what is slow
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| High disk usage and little download activity | Files are being installed or patched | Wait while monitoring disk activity |
| Consistently low download speed everywhere | Wi-Fi, ISP, router, or household traffic | Stop competing traffic, test Ethernet, and restart the router |
| Other services are fast but Epic is slow | Epic route, server load, launcher limit, or disk bottleneck | Check status, disable the limit, and inspect disk activity |
| Both network and disk remain idle | Stalled launcher, storage problem, connection issue, or outage | Restart the launcher or console after checking service status |
| The estimate keeps changing | Recalculation, verification, or communication error | Let it recalculate; verify files on PC if the size looks implausible |
| “Checking for Updates” never advances | Server communication or platform-network issue | Check status and follow the platform-specific network steps |
On Windows, open Task Manager while the update runs. A zero download rate does not prove that the internet failed: Epic says the launcher can pause network downloading while it writes downloaded files to disk (Epic’s explanation).

Wi-Fi and competing traffic
Signal distance, interference, router congestion, streaming, cloud backups, uploads, and downloads on other household devices can reduce sustained throughput. An internet speed test measures a different route and moment from an Epic download.

Epic or platform congestion
Traffic often rises immediately after a major release. Check Epic’s live status page before assuming your setup is at fault. An incident or widespread reports can make waiting the only effective fix.
A launcher download limit
Epic Games Launcher can be configured to cap downloads. As of August 2026, open the profile icon, choose Settings, scroll to Download Settings, clear Limit Download Speeds, and restart the launcher (Epic’s menu instructions).

Slow or busy storage
A mechanical hard drive, nearly full disk, drive errors, or antivirus scanning can make installation and verification much slower than downloading. An SSD may improve this phase, but it cannot fix Epic-side congestion, weak Wi-Fi, or a capped connection.

Routing and security configuration
VPNs, proxy servers, DNS resolution, firewall rules, and ISP routing can interfere with Epic connectivity. DNS changes are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed speed upgrades; do not permanently disable security software.
Fix a slow Fortnite update on PC
- Check service status. Review status.epicgames.com. Epic recommends this first when downloads or the launcher malfunction (slow-download checklist).
- Stop competing traffic. Pause Steam, Xbox, Battle.net, cloud synchronization, video streams, large uploads, and other household downloads.
- Test Ethernet. A wired connection removes many Wi-Fi variables. If unavailable, move closer to the router, use the less-congested band where available, and retest.
- Watch disk activity. High disk use with a low network rate normally means installation is catching up. Let it continue unless progress and disk activity stop completely.
- Restart the launcher cleanly. Sign out, close Epic Games Launcher, open Task Manager, end remaining Epic launcher processes, then reopen it. Epic documents this approach for stuck downloads (stuck-download procedure).
- Clear only the launcher cache. Exit Epic from the system tray, press Windows key + R, enter
%localappdata%, openEpicGamesLauncherSaved, and delete available folders namedwebcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. Do not delete the Fortnite installation folder (cache instructions). - Verify Fortnite. In Library, find Fortnite, select the three-dot menu, choose Manage, then Verify. Verification repairs damaged or different files without affecting saved data (Epic’s verification guide).
- Check free space and drive health. A nominal download can require additional temporary working space. Check the drive for errors and try another drive if failures repeat (Epic’s PC troubleshooting sequence).
- Reinstall only last. Reinstallation consumes a full download and may reproduce the same HDD or network bottleneck. Epic places it after verification, cache, launcher, and drive checks.
Update steps for PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch
PlayStation
- Open Library, select Fortnite, press Options, and choose Check for Update.
- If it remains on “Checking for Updates,” check Epic status, restart the modem or router, test a wired connection, and use PlayStation’s license and network troubleshooting. Custom DNS or MTU changes are advanced steps, not universal speed fixes.
Xbox
- Press the Xbox button.
- Choose My Games & Apps → See All → Games.
- Select Fortnite and choose Update if offered.
Nintendo Switch
- Connect the Switch to the internet and highlight Fortnite on the Home menu.
- Press + or −, choose Software Update, then Via the Internet.
Epic’s platform paths are listed in its Fortnite update instructions. On any console, check both Fortnite and system updates, power-cycle the console, and use the manufacturer’s cache procedure. Reinstall only after simpler repair steps fail (console troubleshooting).

Pause, restart, verify, or reinstall?
Pause and resume
Pause once, wait briefly, and resume to refresh a stalled transfer. If nothing changes, fully restart the launcher or console. Repeatedly cancelling an active installation can trigger another verification pass.
Wait versus force-close
Wait when disk activity is high and the estimate or processed amount is changing. Restart when the launcher is completely idle for an extended period, after checking status. Force-closing during active installation can lead to repair or verification.

Verification versus reinstalling
Verification is less disruptive and normally comes first. Reinstalling is appropriate when verification repeatedly fails, files are corrupted, or the installation drive is problematic; it is a poor first response to ordinary server congestion.
How long should it take?
For downloading alone, a rough estimate is:
seconds ≈ file size in bits ÷ sustained download speed in bits per second
This excludes decompression, verification, disk writes, server throttling, other network use, and retries. Internet plans advertise megabits per second (Mbps), while game sizes use gigabytes (GB), and sustained performance is usually below the headline rate. No responsible fix can promise that a three-hour estimate will become a particular number of minutes.
When waiting is the right answer
- An Epic status incident is active.
- The update launched during a major seasonal release and many players report the same delay.
- Disk activity is high and progress continues, even with a zero network rate.
- Other downloads are also slow on the same connection.
Buy hardware only after diagnosis: Ethernet is the sensible first test for Wi-Fi instability; an SSD is relevant when disk activity proves storage is limiting installation; a router or internet upgrade is justified only when multiple devices show persistent network problems. Premium “gaming” cables, VPN subscriptions, and boosters do not bypass Epic congestion.
The Bottom Line
Three hours does not automatically mean Fortnite is stuck. Check whether the network or the drive is busy, then work from least destructive fixes—status check, traffic control, Ethernet, launcher restart, cache clearing, and PC file verification—before considering a reinstall.
