Why Is a Bitcoin Transaction Unconfirmed? Causes and What to Do

A Bitcoin transaction stays unconfirmed until it enters a block. Learn what causes delays and how sender-side RBF or output-based CPFP may help.

A Bitcoin transaction is unconfirmed until it is included in a block. It may be waiting because its fee is low relative to current demand for block space, because demand has changed since it was sent, or simply because block discovery is unpredictable. Check the transaction in the wallet or service that sent it; if that wallet supports fee bumping, the sender may be able to replace the transaction with a higher-fee version. Neither fee bumping nor waiting guarantees confirmation by a particular time.

What “unconfirmed” means

A wallet can report that a transaction was broadcast or received before it has been included in a block. That status is not the same as blockchain settlement. Bitcoin.org explains that blocks arrive about every 10 minutes on average, but this is an average, not a deadline for an individual transaction; any block may arrive sooner or later. Until a transaction is confirmed, it is not final. Bitcoin Core notes that nodes do not share a globally consistent account of which conflicting transaction was “first,” so an unconfirmed payment should not be treated as settled. Wait for a number of confirmations appropriate to the payment’s value and your risk. Bitcoin Core’s Opt-in RBF FAQ

Why a Bitcoin transaction can remain pending

The fee is low compared with current demand

Transactions compete for limited block space. A lower fee rate than competing transactions can leave a transaction waiting, especially when demand rises. Fees also depend on transaction size, and a wallet’s fee estimate is only an estimate based on conditions at the time—not a promise of confirmation. Bitcoin.org’s confirmation and fee FAQ

Block timing is unpredictable

Even a transaction with a competitive fee may not be included in the next block. The roughly 10-minute average between blocks does not mean one block arrives every 10 minutes on schedule, or that a transaction will confirm within a set number of minutes.

The sender or service controls the transaction

If an exchange or custodial service sent the transaction, you may not control the wallet keys or inputs needed to change it. In that case, the service—not the recipient—may need to address a delay.

How to check and respond to a pending transaction

  1. Find the transaction ID. Open the sending wallet or service and locate the transaction ID (also called a transaction hash). Check its status there. A block explorer can show whether it has appeared on the public blockchain, but it cannot give you control over a transaction sent by a wallet or exchange.
  2. Review the fee and wallet notice. Check the fee rate and whether the wallet offers an increase-fee, fee-bump, or replacement option. Fee conditions change, so an earlier estimate may no longer match the market.
  3. If you sent it, check for RBF or a fee-bump feature. A supported wallet may let you replace the pending transaction with one that spends the same input or inputs and pays a higher fee. The wallet may fund the increase by reducing change or adding inputs. Whether the replacement is accepted depends on the wallet and the relay and mempool policies of the nodes it encounters. Bitcoin Core’s Mempool Replacements policy and the Bitcoin.org psbtbumpfee RPC reference describe these constraints.
  4. If you received it, check whether CPFP is available. If you control an output of the unconfirmed transaction, your wallet may let you create a child transaction that spends it with a higher fee. Miners can consider the combined fee rate of the parent and child, but the method depends on control of an eligible output and wallet support. Bitcoin Optech’s fee-bumping guide
  5. If no fee bump is available, wait or contact the service that sent it. Do not send a second payment unless you understand whether it could duplicate the transfer or conflict with the pending one. For an exchange withdrawal or custodial payment, contact that provider because you may not have the signing wallet’s controls.

RBF vs. CPFP: which option fits?

Question RBF CPFP
Who generally initiates it? The sender, using a wallet that controls the original transaction. Anyone who controls an output of the unconfirmed parent, often the sender controlling change or the recipient controlling a payment output.
What happens? A replacement transaction spends the same input or inputs and pays a higher fee, subject to policy. A new child transaction spends an output of the parent; miners may consider the parent and child as a package.
What must the wallet support? Replacing or bumping the transaction and signing the replacement. Spending an unconfirmed output and creating the dependent child.
Main limitation The original must be available to the wallet, and the replacement must meet applicable relay and mempool policy. You must control an eligible parent output, and package or ancestor policy can constrain acceptance.
Does it guarantee confirmation? No. No.

Bitcoin Core’s documented replacement policy includes requirements beyond simply choosing a higher displayed fee rate. Its current documentation says replacements must cover the originals’ aggregate absolute fees, add enough fee to cover relay bandwidth at the incremental relay feerate, meet other mempool-policy requirements, and strictly improve the mempool feerate diagram. The policy page lists full-RBF as the default beginning with Bitcoin Core v28.0 and an incremental relay feerate of 0.1 sat/vB in the documented policy. These are Bitcoin Core policy details, not universal settings or fee advice: wallets, nodes, exchanges, and miners may behave differently. Bitcoin Core’s Mempool Replacements policy

Can you cancel an unconfirmed Bitcoin transaction?

There is no general undo button for a transaction that has been broadcast. A sender may be able to replace an eligible pending transaction through RBF, but that is a conflicting replacement—not a reversal of a confirmed payment. CPFP adds a dependent child transaction; it does not cancel the parent. Both options concern transactions before block inclusion and depend on wallet support and network policy. When to wait, and when to be cautious

  • Waiting is reasonable if the wallet offers no fee-bump control and the transaction remains pending.
  • For a high-value or consequential payment, do not rely on an unconfirmed notification as proof of settlement; wait for confirmations suitable for your risk.
  • If a service created the transaction, ask that service for its status and available options.
  • Do not assume a transaction will eventually confirm, and do not treat a fee increase as a confirmation deadline.
