Use a Bitcoin wallet to access the keys needed to receive or spend bitcoin; use a block explorer to look up public blockchain records. They do different jobs, and many people use both. An explorer cannot send bitcoin for you, and checking a record in an explorer does not make a transaction private or independently validate the whole Bitcoin network.
What is the difference between a Bitcoin wallet and a block explorer?
Bitcoin records confirmed transactions on a shared public ledger called the blockchain. Wallet software uses keys to help manage funds and authorize transactions. A private key signs a transaction; the network can then verify whether the sender is authorized to spend the bitcoin. Bitcoin.org describes a transaction as “a transfer of value between Bitcoin wallets that gets recorded in the blockchain.” Bitcoin.org: How does Bitcoin work? Bitcoin.org: Bitcoin whitepaper

A block explorer is a lookup tool for public records. Depending on the explorer, you can search for a transaction, block, or address and view information such as its transaction history. An address’s history shows public activity associated with that address; it does not by itself identify the person who controls it. Bitcoin.org: Things to know Bitcoin.org: FAQ

In short: a wallet manages keys and actions; an explorer reads public records. An explorer can show you a transaction, but it cannot sign or send one for you.

Which tool should you use?
| What you want to do | Use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Look up a transaction, block, or address | Block explorer | It displays public ledger information; an address is not proof of a real-world identity. Bitcoin.org: FAQ |
| Receive or spend bitcoin | Wallet software or another wallet arrangement that accesses the relevant keys | An explorer cannot authorize a transaction. Bitcoin.org: Secure your wallet |
| Check a payment you made or received | Wallet history, and optionally an explorer | The wallet shows its view of your activity; an explorer offers a view of the public record. Neither display alone means you independently validated the whole network. Bitcoin.org: Things to know Bitcoin Core: Validation |
| Validate blocks and transactions yourself | Full-node software such as Bitcoin Core | A full node validates what it accepts, but requires more storage, bandwidth, and initial synchronization than a lightweight setup. Bitcoin Core: Validation |
How can you check whether a Bitcoin transaction went through?
- Start with your wallet. Open its transaction history and select the payment. Check the status and transaction details the wallet provides.
- Look up the transaction ID in an explorer if you want a public-record view. Use the transaction ID from your wallet rather than entering a recovery phrase or private key anywhere.
- Interpret confirmations cautiously. A confirmation means the transaction has been included in a block. Bitcoin.org says blocks are found about every ten minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic, so no transaction has a guaranteed confirmation time. Fees and network conditions can affect how long it waits. Bitcoin.org: Things to know
An explorer is showing data, not acting as your personal full node. If independently checking the chain matters to you, Bitcoin Core’s full-node validation is a different approach from relying on a wallet or explorer’s data view. Bitcoin Core: Validation
Are Bitcoin explorers and wallet apps private?
Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent once confirmed. Anyone can inspect address activity in an explorer, though the address does not automatically reveal its owner’s identity. That is pseudonymity, not a promise of anonymity. Bitcoin.org: Things to know

Looking up an address or transaction makes its public history easy to view, but wallet privacy also depends on how the wallet fetches data. Lightweight wallet designs may reveal information to the servers or peers they contact; privacy varies by design. Bitcoin Core documents the privacy trade-offs of lightweight approaches. What should you compare when choosing a wallet?
“Wallet app” covers different custody, validation, and privacy arrangements. Compare the specific wallet and setup rather than assuming all apps work alike.

Privacy and practical burden
Consider what address or payment information the wallet may reveal to the services it contacts, as well as the storage, bandwidth, and initial synchronization needed for your setup. Running a full node offers independent validation with greater resource requirements. Bitcoin Core: Privacy Bitcoin Core: Validation
Recovery and security
Check what the wallet backs up and how you can restore it. A recovery phrase can restore a wallet, but anyone who obtains it may access the associated bitcoin. If you lose the information needed to access a self-custodied wallet, the funds may be permanently inaccessible. Bitcoin.org: Secure your wallet Bitcoin.org: Backup your wallet

Does a hardware wallet replace a wallet app or explorer?
No. A hardware wallet is an optional dedicated device for storing keys, and some wallet software can work with one. It does not replace a block explorer, and it is not required to use a wallet. Bitcoin.org: Choose your wallet
