Treat an AI-planned hike as a draft, not proof that a trail exists, is open, or is right for your group today. Trace it on the official map, check current conditions with the land manager, and prepare offline navigation, a backup plan, and a person who knows when you expect to return. The steps below draw primarily on National Park Service guidance for U.S. national parks; elsewhere, use the responsible land manager’s maps, notices, and rules.
1. Confirm the route exists and can be accessed
Open the official park or land-manager map and trace the proposed route yourself. An AI-generated line or trail name is not evidence that the trail or connection is real.

- Find the actual trailhead and confirm how you can reach it.
- Check every connecting trail, junction, and the planned exit point.
- Compare named landmarks and junctions in the itinerary with the official map and trail information.
- Check whether access roads, trailheads, and connecting segments are open to visitors.
The National Park Service recommends reviewing a map, noting landmarks, and staying alert to signs and junctions while hiking. See its Outdoor Emergency Plan.
2. Decide whether the route suits everyone going
Assess the whole route—not just its distance or a single difficulty label—against the experience, fitness, health, and equipment of every hiker. Use the least experienced or least capable member of the group as your practical baseline.

- Look at terrain, exposure, and likely conditions, not just a route summary.
- Check what clothing, water, and other equipment the terrain and conditions call for.
- If the route is beyond anyone’s ability or preparedness, choose a more suitable option.
The NPS explains that trail demands vary with conditions and group capabilities, and advises hikers to research terrain and equipment needs before setting out. See Hike Smart and its Trip Planning Guide.
3. Recheck conditions and rules close to departure
A route that appears suitable during planning may be unusable on hike day. Check the land manager’s official alerts and closure notices, along with the latest weather forecast, before leaving. Verify any permit, reservation, access, and activity requirements that apply to your route.

The NPS Trip Planning Guide says, “Always carry a backup paper map.” Its Outdoor Emergency Plan advises hikers to review the planned route and note landmarks they can use as reference points. A compass or GPS can help when you know how to use it, but neither replaces route preparation or current official information.

Give a trusted person the actual route, who is going, and when you expect to return. Agree in advance on what they should do if you miss your check-in. Choose a Plan B in case weather, a closure, access restrictions, or the group’s condition makes the planned route unsuitable.

If the AI suggests several options, use the same checks for each rather than choosing by headline distance alone.
| Compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Distance and elevation | Whether the full outing is manageable for everyone in the group. |
| Terrain and exposure | Whether the trail and likely conditions match the group’s skills and gear. |
| Current status | Official closures, alerts, and relevant hazards near departure. |
| Access and rules | Trailhead access and any required permits, reservations, or activity permissions. |
| Navigation and alternatives | Offline map availability, a paper backup, and practical options if the plan must change. |
These comparison checks follow NPS hiking and trip-planning guidance. For U.S. national parks, start with the park’s official information; on other lands, consult the agency or land manager responsible for that area.
