Start with compatibility, storage, Wi-Fi, and power
Apple’s guidance groups update failures into different problems, so begin with the checks that can rule out the simplest causes. Its iPhone and iPad update troubleshooting page covers compatibility, storage, downloads, installation progress, and update-server alerts.

Check that your iPhone supports the update
Confirm your iPhone model and check whether it supports the iOS version being offered. If the model is not compatible, it cannot install that version; further troubleshooting will not make the update available.
Make room in iPhone Storage
Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If offered, enable Offload Unused Apps, or remove apps and other content manually. Apple says iOS may temporarily remove app data that can be downloaded again to make space without removing personal information. Apple’s guidance does not set one universal amount of free space required for every update.

Use Wi-Fi and keep the phone powered
Download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed. Use Wi-Fi and pause other downloads that may compete for bandwidth. Keep the iPhone connected to power during a wireless installation.
If the download is slow or the progress bar seems stuck
A slow download is not necessarily a failed installation. Apple says installation time depends on the update’s size and the device’s storage, and a progress bar can move slowly. Give it time rather than repeatedly restarting the phone while it is updating.

If the battery runs out, connect the iPhone to power and turn it on so the update or restore can finish. If the phone displays a specific error or never progresses, use the troubleshooting steps for that symptom below.
If you see an update-server or network alert
Apple lists alerts including “Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update,” “Unable to Check for Update. Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet,” “Unable to Download. This update is not available because you are not connected to the internet,” and “Unable to Download. This update requires a Wi-Fi network connection to download.” These messages point to a connection or update-server issue, not necessarily a problem with the iPhone itself.

- Retry the update using the same network.
- If it fails again, try a different Wi-Fi network or update using a computer.
- If attempts on multiple networks still fail, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, find the downloaded iOS update, and delete it.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.

Update with a computer if wireless updating keeps failing

Do not use the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot as the computer’s internet connection for the update. Connect the computer to a separate Wi-Fi network or Ethernet instead.
If the computer reports an update or USB error
Computer-based updates can fail because of outdated computer software, a poor cable or USB connection, security software, or network access. Apple’s guidance for update and restore errors and iOS update and restore error codes supports working through these checks:

- Update macOS or the Apple Devices app or iTunes, as applicable.
- Connect the iPhone directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a hub.
- Unlock the iPhone and tap to trust the computer if prompted.
- Try another USB port or a different cable. If replacing the cable, choose one that fits your iPhone’s connector and supports data transfer; Apple recommends trying another Apple USB cable when an update or restore error persists.
- Restart both the iPhone and computer, then try again.
- Check whether security software is interfering with the connection. If the error persists, try another computer on a different network.
Use recovery mode only for specific serious states
Recovery mode is an escalation, not the first response to a slow download or ordinary wireless error. Apple identifies it as a possible next step when the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, a computer does not recognize the iPhone or says it is in recovery mode, the screen says “Connect to computer,” or Recovery Assistant repeatedly starts without recovering the device.
If one of these conditions applies, follow Apple’s instructions for updating or restoring an iPhone that will not update or restore, selecting the steps for your exact iPhone model. An update attempt and a restore are not interchangeable: a restore can have different consequences for data, so read the on-screen choices and Apple’s instructions before proceeding.
