Start by checking which apps and activities are using the most power; then adjust the biggest drains first. Lower screen brightness, shorten screen-on time, restrict unusually power-hungry background apps, and use Battery Saver or Low Power Mode when you can accept its limits. If the phone still runs down quickly, check its battery-health or service information: settings can reduce daily consumption, but they cannot restore capacity lost to battery aging.
Find what is draining the battery before changing settings
Open the phone’s battery-usage screen and look for high-use apps, background activity, and long periods with the display on. This gives you a more useful starting point than turning off every feature at once. On iPhone, Apple’s battery information can show app use and clues such as background activity, location activity, and screen wake-ups. On Android, inspect Battery or Battery usage; labels and available details depend on the phone maker and software version. Change one likely cause at a time and observe whether the pattern improves. A high-use app may be doing necessary work, so restrict background use only if delayed updates or notifications are acceptable.

Dim the display and reduce screen-on time
Lower brightness or enable automatic/adaptive brightness if it suits how you use the phone. Set a shorter screen timeout or Auto-Lock interval so the display turns off sooner when left idle. These adjustments are especially relevant if the battery screen shows substantial screen use or the phone is often left awake. Apple lists high brightness and Auto-Lock among possible battery-drain factors; Google also recommends reducing brightness and shortening screen timeout.

Limit high-use background apps selectively
If a particular app has unusually high battery use, check its background activity and restrict it where the phone offers that option. Android users can also consider Adaptive Battery. Menu names and controls vary, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the model rather than assuming every Android phone has the same path. Avoid indiscriminate restrictions if you rely on an app’s timely notifications or background updates.
Use less power-intensive activity when charge is low
Navigation, GPS use, hotspot operation, video streaming, graphics-heavy games, and calls while moving can consume substantial power. When you need the remaining charge to last, pause or shorten these activities where practical. A dark theme may also be available as a battery-saving option on Android, though the effect depends on the device and display.

Use battery-saving mode when the tradeoff is worthwhile
On iPhone: turn on Low Power Mode
Enable Low Power Mode when you need more runtime and can tolerate some background work or features being limited. Apple says it can reduce or disable Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and visual effects. It is a short-term consumption measure, not a fix for a worn battery. On Android: turn on Battery Saver
Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity. Google warns that visual effects, some features, network connections, and apps may be delayed. Turn it on when preserving charge matters more than those conveniences; the exact activation path varies by model. Google’s Android Help notes that some instructions apply only to Android 13 and later and directs users to their device manufacturer for model-specific details.

Check for battery aging or a software-related change
Check iPhone battery health and service indications
On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the screen shows a Service recommendation, Apple advises considering battery replacement and following the on-screen instructions.
Apple’s current guidance says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; iPhone 15 models are designed for 80% after 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions. These are design figures, not a prediction for an individual phone: actual capacity depends on regular use and charging. Apple distinguishes battery life—the time a device runs before it needs recharging—from battery lifespan, the time before the battery needs replacement. For Android, use the phone maker’s model-specific guidance
Android phones do not share one universal battery-health menu, replacement threshold, or repair route. Check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model if runtime remains poor or you suspect the battery is worn. Google’s general guidance is available at Android Help; Android.com also offers general battery-saving advice, but neither establishes a cross-manufacturer health test or replacement threshold.
Allow time after an iOS update
If the drain began just after an iOS update, Apple says update-related tasks may continue in the background. Wait a few days and check battery use again before treating the change as evidence of battery failure. Apple published this guidance on September 18, 2026, in its battery-drain support article.

Protect long-term battery condition
Settings can lower what the phone consumes today; they do not reverse chemical aging or recover capacity that has already been lost. Heat is a separate concern for long-term care. Apple advises: “Avoid charging or leaving your iPhone in hot environments, including direct sun exposure, for extended periods of time.” More detail is in Apple’s battery and performance guidance.
A low percentage by itself does not identify a specific fault. Consider the usage breakdown, recent updates, and environmental conditions, then use the device’s own health or service indications if available. If replacement appears appropriate, use manufacturer or qualified repair guidance for the exact model; service availability and cost depend on device and location. Apple says out-of-warranty battery service is offered for a charge, subject to current terms and location.
Choose between reducing use and replacing a worn battery

If you need charge while away from an outlet, a compatible USB-C power bank or portable phone charger is an optional workaround. Match the connector and output to the phone; an external charger adds carried energy but does not repair the built-in battery.
