Eye-Fi Card vs. Wi-Fi SD Card: What’s the Difference?

Eye-Fi was a specific wireless SD card brand, while Wi-Fi SD covers a wider range of products such as FlashAir. Both need careful compatibility and support checks today.

Eye-Fi was one specific brand of wireless SD card; “Wi-Fi SD card” is the broader category, which includes products such as Toshiba FlashAir. Today, neither is a straightforward supported wireless-transfer option: Eye-Fi’s original wireless service path ended in 2016, and support and app distribution for FlashAir W-04 ended March 31, 2026. Compatibility also depends on the exact card generation and camera model.

Eye-Fi vs. Wi-Fi SD card: the basic difference

Eye-Fi is a brand name. A Wi-Fi SD card is any SD card designed to transfer photos wirelessly, and different brands and generations may use different workflows and software. Toshiba FlashAir is one example of a separate Wi-Fi SD card product family.

That distinction matters when comparing products: Eye-Fi and FlashAir are not interchangeable names, and the available manufacturer information does not establish that every card from either family connects or transfers in the same way. Check the documentation for the exact card and camera rather than assuming a shared setup process.

What changed with support and software?

Eye-Fi wireless service is legacy

SanDisk’s support notice says Eye-Fi announced on June 30, 2016 that it would stop supporting products including SanDisk Eye-Fi SD cards. The notice advised users to stop wireless use no later than September 16, 2016 because some dependent services would shut down. That history makes the original Eye-Fi wireless experience a legacy setup; it does not establish whether an individual card remains usable for ordinary SD storage. SanDisk’s Eye-Fi support notice

FlashAir W-04 app support has ended

Kioxia’s notice, dated December 11, 2025, identifies the FlashAir SD-UWA W-04 models SD-UWA016G, SD-UWA032G, and SD-UWA064G as discontinued. It states that related app distribution and product support ended March 31, 2026. Do not treat the FlashAir app as currently supported. Kioxia’s FlashAir W-04 notice

Will one work with your camera?

There is no universal compatibility guarantee. A camera may recognize one FlashAir generation but not support Eye-Fi features, or may require specific setup. For example, Ricoh’s WG-7 guidance lists compatible FlashAir types, requires firmware updates and initial card setup, and states: “Eye-Fi linkage function is not supported.” It also warns not to format the FlashAir card in the camera. This is guidance for the WG-7, not a rule that can be applied to other camera models. Ricoh WG-7 FAQ

Kioxia’s W-04 checked-operation list is likewise a model-specific reference. It says transfer procedures can vary depending on whether a device has a FlashAir menu, and that its operation checks do not cover server-upload or peer-to-peer functions. A listed camera/device check should not be read as a guarantee for every feature or every setup. Kioxia FlashAir checked-operation list

How did Eye-Fi transfer photos?

Some camera makers documented a workflow in which users configured Eye-Fi settings, enabled the camera’s Eye-Fi option where available, and then transferred photos after shooting or when the camera started with pending images. Casio describes that behavior for applicable cameras, but it is a description of the documented workflow—not evidence that the discontinued Eye-Fi wireless services work now. Casio Eye-Fi camera FAQ

What to check before buying or trying a used card

  1. Identify the exact card. Record the brand, generation, model number, and capacity. “Wi-Fi SD” alone is not enough to determine its setup or compatibility.
  2. Check the camera maker’s documentation. Search for your exact camera model and the card generation. Confirm supported card types, firmware requirements, setup steps, and any exclusions.
  3. Confirm software and setup access. Establish whether the required app or configuration tools are still available and supported. For FlashAir W-04, Kioxia says app distribution and support ended March 31, 2026.
  4. Ask about the individual card’s condition. A used listing does not prove that the card works, that its wireless features are functional, or that its original service flow remains available.
  5. Separate storage from wireless transfer. A card’s wireless support history does not by itself tell you whether that particular card can still store files as an ordinary SD card.

What replaced Eye-Fi?

FlashAir W-04 is a historical alternative to compare, not a current supported replacement: Kioxia discontinued that series and ended its related app distribution and product support in 2026. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a single direct replacement compatible with every camera. If you need wireless transfers now, choose a solution only after confirming it supports your exact camera and that its required software and services are available.
