If an iPhone email won’t attach a photo, first check where the problem occurs: the photo may be missing from the picker, may not have been inserted into the draft, or may be too large or blocked when you send. In Apple Mail, tap in the message, open the attachment actions above the keyboard, choose Photo Library, select the saved photo or video, and tap Done. Then use the checks below for the symptom you see.
How to attach a photo in Apple Mail on iPhone
Apple’s current iPhone guide documents this path for Mail. Exact labels can vary by iOS version; the guide consulted covers iOS 27.

- Open a new message or reply in Mail, then tap where you want the photo to appear.
- Tap the attachment actions control above the keyboard.
- Tap Photo Library, select a saved photo or video, then tap Done. Apple’s Mail attachment guide
The image may appear inline in the message rather than as a paperclip or separate file. Apple says attachment placement can depend on file size, so inline appearance alone does not mean it failed.

- Open Photos and confirm the image is in your library. Try selecting another photo you know is saved there; this helps tell whether the issue affects one item or the picker generally.
- Check app access under Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos. Apple documents these privacy controls, but checking them is a diagnostic step—not proof that permission is the cause. Apple’s guide to controlling access to information in apps
- If the image is not in Photos, use the attachment menu’s camera option to take a new photo or video, then tap Use Photo or Use Video.
- For an image or other file stored outside Photos, choose Attach File in the attachment menu and browse in Files.
If the photo does not seem to appear in the draft
After selecting it, tap Done and inspect the message body before sending. A photo can be embedded inline, so look through the draft rather than relying on a paperclip icon. If nothing appears, try another saved photo, then try a new capture or a file from Files. Comparing these routes helps isolate whether the trouble is with one library item or attachment insertion more broadly.

If the photo is in the draft but the email will not send
This is a delivery problem, not a picker problem. If Mail offers Mail Drop for an oversized attachment, follow the prompt. Apple says Mail Drop supports attachments up to 5 GB; recipients have 30 days to download them. A recipient’s mail system may impose a lower limit, so Mail Drop does not guarantee that every recipient can accept the message. Apple’s Mail Drop limits and requirements
Apple also lists other constraints that can affect sending, including an uncompressed folder’s size, message or recipient sending limits, and Mail Drop storage capacity. The same support page gives a 1 TB Mail Drop storage limit; each attachment expires after 30 days. These are service limits, not a measure of how often attachment failures happen.

If iCloud Mail is the account that cannot send
Work through Apple’s iCloud Mail checks: confirm iCloud Mail is enabled, install the latest iOS version available for your iPhone, check your internet connection and iCloud Mail service status, review iCloud storage and mailbox or message limits, try without a configured VPN, and restart the iPhone. If you use Gmail, Outlook, or another provider in Mail, check that provider’s current service status and account sending limits. The iCloud-specific checks do not establish the limits or fix for another provider.
