Ripping a standard 2D DVD makes a digital video copy; it does not create stereoscopic 3D. To produce a 3D-style file, you need software that explicitly converts 2D video into separate left-eye and right-eye views, then you must choose a layout your player and display can handle. DVDFab has described this DVD conversion capability, but its detailed DVD-specific feature description dates to May 2011, so confirm current support before relying on it.
First, distinguish ripping from 2D-to-3D conversion
A DVD ripper extracts or transcodes the video. If the DVD contains ordinary 2D footage, the resulting file remains 2D unless a separate conversion step synthesizes stereoscopic views. Such conversion estimates depth from a flat image; it does not recover the original stereoscopic photography or guarantee a convincing 3D effect.

DVDFab’s detailed description of DVD 2D-to-3D conversion is a historical vendor article published in May 2011. It describes taking a 2D DVD and producing a stereoscopic output, but it is not proof that the feature, formats, or workflow remain available in the current release. Check the current product documentation and requirements before installing or purchasing software: DVDFab’s 2011 DVD and Blu-ray 2D-to-3D description. A more recent DVDFab resource page also mentions DVD-to-3D capability, but verify the exact current feature set there: DVDFab’s DVD-to-digital resource.

How to create a 3D-style file from a DVD
- Confirm the source and drive. Make sure you have a DVD and a computer with a DVD drive. If the computer has no optical drive, an external USB DVD drive may be needed; check its connection and DVD-media support. MakeMKV documents DVD disc reading and DVD mode in its DVD mode manual.
- Choose software with explicit DVD 2D-to-3D conversion. A tool that only reads, copies, or transcodes DVDs will not synthesize stereo views. DVDFab’s historical material describes this feature, but check current software documentation for support of DVD discs, folders, or images and for current operating-system and licensing requirements.
- Choose the stereo layout for your playback setup. The historical DVDFab description lists left/right and top/bottom output. These are different arrangements of the two views, not video containers. Check that your playback app and display support the selected arrangement before encoding.
- Select a supported file container. The same historical description lists AVI, MP4, MKV, and FLV. Treat that list as historical, not as a current specification. Select a container offered by the software and accepted by your player.
- Encode, then test the result on the intended setup. Confirm that the player interprets the selected stereo layout correctly and that the image displays as expected. Successful playback confirms compatibility, not that the conversion has recreated native 3D.
When a normal digital copy is all you need
If the goal is simply to store a DVD digitally or change its file format, use a ripper or transcoder rather than assuming a 3D conversion feature is involved.

MakeMKV for DVD-to-MKV copying
MakeMKV says it reads DVDs and writes MKV files while preserving most information without changing it, including audio and video tracks, chapters, and metadata: MakeMKV. Its 3D FAQ concerns Blu-ray 3D, not a conventional 2D DVD: MakeMKV’s Blu-ray 3D FAQ.
HandBrake for transcoding
HandBrake documents conversion to MP4, MKV, or WebM and processing DVD and Blu-ray sources. The cited documentation does not describe stereoscopic 3D synthesis. It also states: “HandBrake does not defeat or circumvent copy protection of any kind.” See the HandBrake 1.7.0 introduction.

If the disc is actually a 3D Blu-ray
A 3D Blu-ray is a different source from a standard DVD. If your goal is to preserve authored stereoscopic material from a 3D Blu-ray, follow a Blu-ray 3D workflow and verify how the resulting file and player handle its 3D data. MakeMKV’s 3D FAQ discusses Blu-ray 3D playback; it does not establish a way to turn an ordinary DVD into native stereoscopic video.
