Instagram recommendations reflect signals such as content you have expressed interest in and actions you take across Meta apps. If those past signals no longer match what you want, Reels can feel off-target. You can steer individual recommendations or reset suggested content across Feed, Reels, and Explore, but Meta does not promise an immediate or permanent fix.
Why Instagram may recommend Reels that do not fit
Meta describes recommendations broadly: its apps suggest content based on interests people express and actions they take. That can help explain why recommendations may lag behind a change in your tastes, but Meta has not published a complete technical specification of Instagram Reels ranking or the weights assigned to different signals. Its Recommendation Guidelines explain the general approach, not why a particular Reel appeared for a particular person. Meta said it consulted 50 leading experts while developing those guidelines; that is a count of consulted experts, not evidence that recommendations are accurate or effective.

Recommendation eligibility is another factor. Meta says some content may be allowed on Instagram but not eligible to be recommended broadly. So a Reel appearing in recommendations does not mean every similar post will be distributed, and content being allowed on the platform does not guarantee it will be recommended.
Meta also announced that, beginning December 16, 2025, interactions with Meta AI would be used to personalize content and ad recommendations in most regions. Its example was that discussing hiking with Meta AI may inform hiking-related recommendations. This is a possible recommendation signal, not proof that an AI conversation caused any specific Reel to appear; Meta says feed and ad controls remain available. See Meta’s announcement.

Choose between targeted feedback and a reset
Use targeted feedback if you want to change particular topics or recommendations while preserving useful parts of your current suggestions. Choose a reset if you want a broader refresh across three surfaces and are comfortable with recommendations personalizing again from later activity. Neither option guarantees that the feed will become more relevant.

How to reset suggested content
- Open your Instagram profile and tap More options (the three-bar menu).
- Tap Content preferences, then Reset suggested content.
- Review and accept the terms shown, then confirm the reset.
Meta says the reset affects recommendations across Feed, Reels, and Explore. Suggestions personalize again over time based on the content and accounts you interact with. Meta does not specify how long that takes or promise that a reset will improve relevance. The menu may not be available to every account, and labels or availability can change. Give feedback on individual recommendations
Use Not interested for content you want less of
On a recommended Reel, tap the three-dot menu and select Not interested. Meta says this feedback helps shape recommendations. The option is useful for steering away from an individual recommendation without clearing suggestions across other surfaces. Meta describes the control in its Instagram settings announcement.

If Instagram offers Interested on a recommendation, selecting it signals that you want more content like it. The control’s availability has varied across surfaces and feature rollouts, so do not expect to see it in every Reel menu. Meta discussed recommendation feedback controls in its reset announcement and its explanation of how AI influences what people see.

Filter unwanted caption terms with Hidden Words
Meta describes Hidden Words as a way to hide recommended content containing specified words or phrases in captions. This can help reduce recommendations using terms you choose, but it is not a universal ban on a topic: content may use different wording, and a topic can appear without the exact term. Meta outlines the feature in its reset announcement and Instagram settings announcement.

What these controls can—and cannot—tell you
- Recommendations are personalized using expressed interests and activity, but old signals may no longer reflect what you want now.
- Eligibility rules can affect whether content is recommended, separately from whether it is permitted on Instagram.
- Meta’s public explanations describe broad signals and controls, not the proprietary ranking formula or a user-specific diagnosis.
- Menu labels, feature rollouts, account eligibility, and regional availability can change; Meta’s announcements do not establish that every account currently has every control.
