Choose the iPhone Duo if you will regularly unfold it for reading, documents, video or side-by-side apps. Choose the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max if you want a conventional phone, a more capable telephoto camera and a lower starting price. The Duo’s larger screen is its defining advantage; it is not an across-the-board upgrade.
Apple says the Duo will be available beginning October 23, 2026, so it is not yet on sale as of October 4, 2026.

What is the main difference?
The iPhone Duo is a foldable phone that opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and closes around a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple says the open display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max keep a conventional, rigid-phone design, with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays respectively, according to MacRumors’ September 16, 2026 comparison.
That difference changes how you use the phone. The Duo gives you more room for reading, viewing and working with two apps side by side, while still closing to a phone-sized form. The Pro models avoid the foldable form factor and cost less. Apple describes the Duo as its first foldable iPhone.

Which one should you buy?
Choose iPhone Duo if the open screen will change your routine
- You often read long documents, browse, or watch video on your phone and want a larger screen without carrying a separate tablet.
- You expect to use side-by-side apps or other tasks that benefit from the wider open display.
- You are willing to pay the cited $700 premium over the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro to get that foldable form factor.
The Duo makes sense when unfolding is a regular part of how you use your phone, not just an occasional novelty. Apple lists IP68 resistance under IEC 60529, with a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes, but that rating does not establish long-term foldable-screen durability or protection from damage.

Choose iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max if camera reach and value matter more
- You take photos of distant subjects and want the dedicated telephoto camera and up to 8x optical-quality zoom Apple lists for the Pro models.
- You prefer a conventional phone rather than a device with a folding screen.
- You want a lower starting price: the 256GB Pro and Pro Max were listed at $1,199 and $1,299 in MacRumors’ September 16, 2026 guide.
The Pro Max offers the larger conventional display; the Pro costs less. Neither is the foldable-screen option.
Does the Duo have a better chip or battery?
Apple lists the same A20 Pro chip across the Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, so the chip tier is not the key reason to choose one. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback using the Duo’s inner display or up to 44 hours using its outer display. Those are manufacturer figures under stated conditions, not independent results or a direct real-world comparison with the Pro models. The available figures do not establish which phone lasts longer in typical use.
Rank #3
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
What is known about charging and accessories?
Apple lists MagSafe, Qi2 25W and Qi-certified wireless charging support for the Duo. Apple also announced a two-part Duo Case and a Duo Folio with an integrated kickstand on September 9, 2026. Accessory availability and compatibility can change; confirm the specific product and seller before purchasing.
Verdict
For most buyers choosing between these designs, the deciding question is whether they will use the Duo’s larger open screen often enough to justify its premium. If the answer is yes, the foldable has a distinct use case. If not, the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max gives you a conventional design, stronger stated telephoto reach and a lower US starting price.
