My rate calculator, proposal generator, contract generator, and invoice and cash-flow tracker are designed to download and open in a browser, with no npm install, build step, server, database, or signup. That simplicity is a deliberate fit for these tools—not a claim that a local file is right for every workflow.
What a single-file freelance tool means
Each tool is packaged as one .html file. The page contains its interface, styling, and client-side JavaScript, so a user can open it in a browser instead of deploying an application or connecting to an online account. The set described by maker Ahn mumu includes a rate calculator, proposal generator, contract generator, and invoice/cash-flow tracker. Ahn mumu’s article

The implementation is intentionally basic: application state is kept in the browser’s localStorage; JavaScript runs from a script tag; CSS uses custom properties; and window.print() with print-specific CSS supports printing or saving output as a PDF. The file can be distributed by download, email, or copying it to a USB stick.

Why choose this instead of another SaaS account?
For tools a freelancer may use only occasionally, I see recurring setup and service overhead as a poor fit: creating another account, handing over an email address, putting information on a service’s server, and paying an ongoing subscription. On the maker side, a hosted product also means taking responsibility for authentication, a database, hosting, and uptime. Those are my reasons for choosing a local file for this particular tool set, not a measured verdict on every SaaS product.

As I put it in the original article, “So I asked: what’s the simplest thing that could possibly work?” The answer here is a file that opens in a browser and handles a bounded task without requiring an online service.
What the format makes easier—and what it gives up
- Less infrastructure: There is no server, database, or authentication system for me to maintain for these tools.
- Local handling: The described design stores app state in the browser rather than relying on a hosted account. That is an architectural choice, not an independently verified guarantee about every browser configuration or every possible data flow.
- Simple distribution: A file can be downloaded or copied, without setting up access to a service.
- No built-in cross-device sync: A file and browser-local state do not provide the convenience of a hosted account that follows you from device to device.
- No collaboration features: The approach does not include shared workspaces or multi-user editing.
- You handle backups: Because the data is stored in the browser, users are responsible for protecting it. Browser-local storage should not be treated as a substitute for an intentional backup.
I also expect a file with no external dependency or API to be less exposed to a vendor discontinuing that dependency. That is a design rationale, not a guarantee that a particular file will work indefinitely: browser behavior and compatibility can change, and long-term durability has not been independently established.

How to decide whether a local file fits your workflow
Compare the actual work you need to do, rather than assuming local or hosted software is universally better:
| Decision point | Standalone HTML file | Hosted tool |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and account overhead | Download and open the file; no signup is described. | May involve account creation or setup; requirements vary by service. |
| Where data is stored | The described tools keep state in browser localStorage. |
Data may be stored on the provider’s servers; check the specific service’s terms and settings. |
| Sync or collaboration | No cross-device sync or collaboration features are included. | May suit shared or multi-device work, depending on the service. |
| Backup responsibility | You are responsible for backing up browser-stored data. | Backup and recovery arrangements depend on the provider. |
| Ongoing infrastructure or subscription burden | The maker describes no server or database to maintain for these files. | Infrastructure and subscription requirements vary by product. |
A local file is a good fit when you want a focused utility, work on one device, and are willing to manage your own backups. If you need a shared source of truth, reliable access from several devices, or team collaboration, those missing features may matter more than avoiding an account.

The approach in practice
Ahn mumu presents the “Complete Freelance Business Kit” as a digital bundle demonstrating this approach. The important idea is not that every business app should be a single file; it is that a small, occasional-use tool can sometimes do its job without the operational machinery of a hosted product.
