When a shopper describes “that little stone thing for face massage,” translating the words literally may not lead to the product they mean. In his account of building OneFindMe, a free multilingual search layer for AliExpress, engineer Ohad Farkash says the more useful task was resolving shopping intent first, then translating a concise product query. His experience offers practical lessons for teams building multilingual marketplace search—but it is one project’s account, not a measure of AliExpress search behavior overall.
Resolve what the shopper means before translating
Farkash describes OneFindMe as a search tool that accepts requests in 12 languages and applies translation, query shortening, and ranking. His central lesson is that a literal translation can preserve the words but lose the shopping intent.

For example, Farkash says Hebrew “לק ג׳ל” may be translated as “gel polish.” In his experience, that wording could bring back floor lacquer as well as nail products. His proposed alternative is to map the shopper’s phrase to a canonical product query first, then translate that resolved query for the marketplace.

That is a practical trade-off. Curated mappings take ongoing effort and cannot anticipate every phrase, while model-generated interpretations may sound convincing without identifying the right product category. Farkash says unknown terms could be translated and cached on first use, rather than requiring every possible query to be mapped in advance.

Send a short, noun-led query
Once intent is resolved, Farkash recommends keeping the marketplace query short. In the marketplace API he used, he says long descriptive queries performed worse. Put the product noun first and retain only one or two useful qualifiers.

This is a reported implementation result, not a documented rule about AliExpress search. Farkash does not provide a test set or ranking measurements, so the example is best treated as a design hypothesis to evaluate against a product’s own queries and results.

Rank for signs of demand, not just low prices
Farkash says his system ordered candidates using order volume and lightly penalized listings without reviews. He reports that users clicked these results. In his approach, price was a filter rather than a ranking signal: shoppers could narrow the set by budget without automatically pushing the cheapest listing to the top.
The distinction matters because a low price alone does not establish that a listing is relevant or trusted. But the source account supplies no click-through rates, order-volume thresholds, or controlled comparison with price-led ranking. It does not establish how AliExpress itself ranks listings.

Cache query resolution, not volatile product results
A resolved translation or canonical query may remain useful longer than a product result: marketplace availability changes, while the meaning of a shopper’s phrase is comparatively stable. On that basis, Farkash says OneFindMe cached resolved queries rather than product results, reducing latency in his implementation. New terms could be translated and cached the first time they appeared.
The account gives no latency figure, cache lifetime, or measured inventory-change interval. For a search system that also caches results, the practical design question is therefore what can safely remain stable and what needs a freshness policy: query interpretation can often be reused, while availability and other listing details may need more frequent updating.

Adapt retrieval to the shopper’s market
A query that works across languages may still need market-specific handling. Farkash names shipping thresholds, category economics, and modesty defaults as considerations that vary by country. In his account, the difficult part was removing irrelevant results without filtering out legitimate intent.
That points to a useful separation in system design: language handling resolves what the shopper is asking for; market-aware retrieval decides which results are practical and appropriate for that shopper’s destination and context. Farkash does not list all 12 locales or provide market-by-market measurements, so his examples should not be read as a complete localization checklist.

What the account does—and does not—show
These are lessons Farkash reports from building OneFindMe, not independently validated findings about AliExpress ranking internals or multilingual search systems generally. His account provides no model name, API version, study design, sample size, or quantitative outcome data. Builders can use the choices as starting points, then evaluate them with their own languages, query logs, and relevance judgments.
