ASOShot is a free, browser-based editor for building screenshot sets for Apple App Store and Google Play listings. The vendor says you can start from a template or a blank canvas, add realistic device frames, write localized captions, set backgrounds, and export store-sized images, including a multi-locale ZIP. It advertises no sign-up and no watermark. The title of the original write-up is a first-person “why I built it” account, but this article does not reconstruct the builder’s personal motivation, which is not available to us in detail. Instead, it explains what the tool does, how to use it well, and where its claims stop.
What ASOShot is for
Store screenshots are one of the few listing assets a visitor sees before deciding whether to install an app. Producing a clean set means choosing device frames, writing short headlines, keeping type readable at thumbnail size, and then repeating the work for every language a listing supports. ASOShot is aimed at that production step. It is not a store listing manager, an analytics product, or an image generator. It is an editor where you assemble the finished images.

How the workflow runs
The vendor describes a straightforward sequence. The steps below follow that description; the menu names are the ones the vendor’s guides use, and your screen may differ if the interface changes.

- Pick a starting point. Open a template or a blank canvas. Templates give you a layout you can adjust rather than building from nothing.
- Place the device frame. Add a phone or tablet frame and drop your app screen into it. The vendor describes these frames as realistic.
- Write the headline and subtitle. Use the headline and subtitle text layers, then adjust formatting, typography, effects, and container position.
- Set the background. Adjust the canvas background so the device and text stay legible against it.
- Localize. Duplicate the set for each locale you support and replace the caption text. Check each language before export.
- Export. Download the store-sized images. For several locales, use the multi-locale ZIP export rather than saving files one by one.
Writing captions that survive a small screen
ASOShot’s caption guide makes a few points that matter more than any tool feature. The first line should lead with a concrete benefit, because that is the part a reader scans. A subtitle earns its place only when it adds context the headline cannot carry. Before exporting, view the canvas at a small zoom level and confirm that the headline still reads at a glance. Text that looks fine at full size often collapses on a phone.

Test copy with the store’s own tools
The guide recommends testing alternate copy through the store’s own product-page experiment features rather than assuming a new headline will convert better. Treat the editor as the place where variants are produced, and the store’s experiment tools as the place where they are measured. Neither a template nor a clean layout guarantees a stronger result.
Localization across 22 locale presets
Localization is where a screenshot tool saves the most repetitive work. ASOShot lists 22 locale presets, which sets up the layouts and text fields for each target language. A preset does not translate anything for you. Captions still need a translator or a native reviewer, and line length changes significantly between languages, so a headline that fits in English may wrap or crowd the frame in German or Japanese. Review every localized export on the device frame before publishing.

Where AI fits in the workflow
ASOShot’s vendor describes an AI-assisted planning step that happens before any visual work. The suggested uses are generating short caption variants, drafting briefs for localization, deciding the order of screenshots, and writing experiment hypotheses. Whatever an assistant produces should be checked for accuracy and for claims your app cannot back up. Translations need the same review. The actual layout, export, and design decisions happen inside ASOShot.
Two boundaries are worth stating plainly. The vendor says the editor does not expose a public screenshot-generation API or an MCP server, so this is not an automated pipeline you can call from code. It is also not an AI image generator: the screenshots are assembled by you in the editor.

The vendor’s comparison guide positions the free workflow for individuals and small teams. Teams that need shared review, approvals, or collaboration features are pointed toward paid collaboration platforms. Whatever you choose, confirm current pricing, privacy terms, export dimensions, and cancellation terms directly with each provider, because those details change.

- Every claim in a caption matches what the app actually does today.
- Translations reviewed by a native speaker, not only by an assistant.
- Device frames match the screen sizes you are submitting.
