Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can install a VPN app directly on Apple TV if your model runs tvOS 17 or later and the provider offers a native Apple TV app. Most of the providers below that document an Apple TV app list tvOS 17 as the minimum, so check your software version before choosing one. If your Apple TV cannot run a VPN app, your two fallbacks are a VPN configured on your router or a DNS-based streaming service. Only the router option encrypts Apple TV traffic.
The five providers in this guide are ordered alphabetically, not ranked. “Best” here means they meet documented criteria: a native Apple TV app, a manageable setup, location selection inside the app, published privacy information, and a fallback for unsupported devices. The published material does not include controlled speed or streaming-access tests, so this article makes no claim about which service is fastest or unlocks the most content.

Check your Apple TV’s software version first
Compatibility is the first filter because the setup path depends on your hardware and tvOS version. To see your version on the Apple TV, open Settings > System > About and read the software version. If the version is below tvOS 17, the native apps listed below will not install, and you should use one of the fallback methods described later in this article.

What a VPN on Apple TV does and does not protect
Apple’s own privacy disclosure for VPNs gives the clearest description of the trade-off. It states: “When a VPN configuration is installed and active, your VPN provider may be able to see, intercept, and modify your online activity.” The provider you pick therefore becomes a party that sees your traffic, which is why the provider’s privacy policy and any independent audits matter more than the app’s appearance.
Apple also notes that some essential system traffic can remain outside the VPN tunnel. A connected VPN does not mean every packet from the Apple TV is routed through the provider. Apple’s security guide describes VPN deployment on its platforms in more technical detail: Virtual private network (VPN) security.
The three ways to run a VPN-style setup on Apple TV
Direct app installation
This is the simplest route and the only one that runs the VPN on the Apple TV itself. The app configures a VPN connection on that device, so only the Apple TV’s traffic is affected. It requires a compatible tvOS version and, for some providers, a paid subscription.

Router-level VPN
A router-level VPN encrypts traffic from every device on your network, including an Apple TV that cannot run a VPN app. ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access both publish router guidance. The trade-off is setup effort: you need a router that supports a VPN client or a provider-specific configuration, and every device on that network then uses the VPN. Router firmware and capabilities vary, so follow your router’s and provider’s current instructions.
Smart DNS
Smart DNS changes how the Apple TV resolves domain names. It is not an encrypted VPN. ExpressVPN states that its MediaStreamer service is designed for streaming but does not provide the privacy and security benefits of a VPN. Smart DNS behavior and availability differ by provider, so do not assume a feature described by one service exists at another.

ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s Apple TV app setup page specifies tvOS 17 or later for its native app. Devices below that version can use MediaStreamer or a router running ExpressVPN. The setup page also includes an in-app speed test. That is a provider feature you can use on your own connection, not evidence of how ExpressVPN compares with other services.

PIA publishes a dedicated app for compatible Apple TV devices running tvOS 17 or later. Its guide, How to Install and Use PIA on Apple TV, covers sign-in, granting VPN configuration permission, and choosing a location. It states that the Apple TV app uses the IKEv2 protocol. PIA also documents Smart DNS and virtual router alternatives for devices that cannot run the app.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN’s Apple TV app page lists tvOS 17 or later and states that the app requires a paid plan. Installation starts in the Apple TV App Store and continues with on-screen sign-in. If you are on a free plan, the app is not a route to a working Apple TV setup.

Surfshark
Surfshark’s Apple TV setup article says the app requires tvOS 17 or later and an active subscription. The same page states that Surfshark’s SmartDNS feature has been discontinued. If you need a DNS-only route for an older Apple TV, Surfshark’s own documentation does not offer one.
NordVPN
NordVPN’s documentation describes installing its app from the App Store and selecting a location, and it names the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K device families. The Apple TV VPN setup page we checked is the Spanish-language version. Use NordVPN’s English-language official page for exact procedural wording and confirm the minimum tvOS version there.

How to install a VPN app on Apple TV
The general flow is the same across providers, but menu labels and sign-in screens differ. Follow your provider’s current guide if its steps conflict with the outline below.
- From the Apple TV home screen, open the App Store app.
- Search for the provider’s name and open its Apple TV app. Check the listing or the provider’s support page for the tvOS requirement before you install.
- Select the install option for the app and wait for the download to finish.
- Open the app and sign in with your provider account. Proton VPN requires a paid plan before the app can be used.
- When the app asks for permission to add a VPN configuration, approve it. Without this permission the app cannot route traffic.
- Choose a server location from inside the app.
- Connect, then confirm the app shows a connected status and the location you selected before opening a streaming app.
If your Apple TV cannot run a VPN app
An Apple TV below tvOS 17 has three realistic options. Choose based on whether you need encryption, not just a changed streaming location.
- Need encryption for everything on the network: Set up a VPN on a router that supports it, using the router guidance from ExpressVPN or PIA’s virtual router instructions. Every device on that network will use the VPN, so check that this is acceptable.
- Need only a streaming DNS route: Use a Smart DNS service from a provider that documents it, such as ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer or PIA’s Smart DNS guidance. You will change the DNS setting in the Apple TV’s network settings, as the provider’s guide describes. This route does not encrypt your traffic.
- Need the Apple TV app itself: Update tvOS if your model supports a newer version. If the model cannot run tvOS 17, the native apps in this guide will not install.
What this comparison does not establish
- Speed: No controlled speed tests of these providers on Apple TV were available. Speed depends on your connection, the chosen server, and the time of day.
- Streaming access: Whether a VPN unlocks a particular library or app varies by server, service, account, and time. None of the providers’ pages promise access to a specific library, and this article does not either.
- Server counts: Server totals are vendor claims and were not compared on a common basis. A larger network does not establish faster Apple TV streaming.
- Independent audits: The provider documentation reviewed does not establish whether each provider’s privacy claims have been independently audited. Check each provider’s privacy and audit pages before choosing.
