There is no single best note-taking app. The right one depends on how you capture ideas, how you need to find them later, which devices you use, whether you work alone or with a team, and whether you want your notes stored as files you control. Current 2026 comparisons from ClickUp (September 16, 2026) and Dupple (updated June 16, 2026) both sort recommendations by use case for this reason.
This guide covers twelve apps that those comparisons and the vendors’ own pages describe in enough detail to compare. It does not present a ranked list of twenty. Instead, each entry names the reader it suits, one strength, and one tradeoff, so you can match a tool to the way you actually think and write.

How to choose: five questions to answer first
- How do you capture ideas? Typing a quick thought, handwriting in a class, clipping a web page, and recording a meeting are different jobs. Pick the app that makes your most frequent capture the fastest.
- How will you retrieve them? Opening a note is easy; finding one from three years ago is the real test. Check whether search covers the content you rely on, such as text, images, PDFs, or handwriting.
- Which devices do you use daily? An Apple-only workflow, a Windows and Android setup, and an iPad with a stylus lead to different choices.
- Do you collaborate? Shared wikis and databases help teams, but they ask you to set up structure before you write anything.
- Who owns the files? Some apps keep notes in their own service, while others store them as local Markdown files. Your answer determines how hard it is to leave later.
The twelve apps, by reader
Microsoft OneNote: freeform notebooks and handwriting
ClickUp positions OneNote as a flexible page canvas and a free notebook for Windows and Android users. It suits people who want to place text, sketches, and clippings anywhere on a page, much like a paper notebook. The tradeoff is that its freeform layout gives you less built-in structure than a database, so consistent organization depends on your own habits.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteApple Notes: quick capture inside Apple’s ecosystem
ClickUp recommends Apple Notes for people who stay within Apple devices. It supports Quick Note and Apple Pencil use, which makes it a low-friction place to jot down an idea from any Apple device. The tradeoff is that it is strongest when you stay within Apple’s platforms; if your work spans Windows or Android, another app will fit better.
#1 Best Overall
- A classroom classic: this 6-pack of 1-subject spiral notebooks helps you identify your subjects at a glance with color-coding efficiency; color assortment may vary
- The right ruling: these 8" x 10-1/2", college-ruled notebooks fit more writing per page than wide-ruled sheets; each notebook provides 70 double-sided sheets with red margin lines
- Perect perforation: Dependable micro-perforated sheets retain your must-have notes but still detach cleanly when you’re ready to revise
- Glide from page to page: Your favorite gel or ballpoint pens will move effortlessly across these smooth pages for A+ notes with minimal ink bleeding or show-through
- 3-Hold punched: Every notebook comes 3-hole punched to fit a standard binder; take along one notebook or several to save extra trips to the locker
Notion: structured notes and team wikis
Notion uses database-style pages, so you can organize meeting notes by properties such as project, owner, or date. Dupple describes it as an all-in-one workspace for teams. The tradeoff is that the structure you gain for retrieval and collaboration must be designed up front, which can feel heavy if you only want to write a quick thought.
Obsidian: a local knowledge base with linked notes
Obsidian is built around local Markdown files and links between notes. Both ClickUp and Dupple position it for readers who value file ownership and a knowledge base they can keep for years. The tradeoff is the setup cost: linking and organizing notes well takes deliberate habits, and the app is less of a shared workspace than Notion.
Rank #2
- 1 subject notebook comes with 70 wide ruled, double-sided sheets. Wide ruling is ideal for the younger student who needs more space between lines.
- Sheets measure 7-1/2" x 10-1/2" when torn out with an overall size of 8" x 10-1/2". Perforation easily tears out with clean edges.
- Notebook is 3-hole punched to store in your favorite binder. Covers are coated for durability and have writable label on front cover.
- Includes 6 notebooks in randomly selected colors: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple or Black. Colors will vary with each purchase.
- Assembled in U.S.A. with U.S. and foreign parts
Goodnotes: handwriting and PDF markup on iPad
ClickUp’s September 2026 comparison positions Goodnotes for handwriting and PDF markup, with searchable handwritten notes. It is the most relevant pick if you take class notes or annotate documents with a stylus. The tradeoff is that its strengths are tied to tablet handwriting, so it is a weaker choice for text-first capture on a laptop.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Evernote: web clipping and an established archive
ClickUp and Dupple both position Evernote for clipping web pages and searching captured material later. It suits people who collect articles and references in one searchable archive. The tradeoff is that it is oriented around collecting rather than linking ideas, so it offers less structure for developing a thought over time.
Rank #3
- 12-pack of 50-sheet note pads with letter-size 16 pound White paper; ideal for everyday use at home, school, or office
- Wide ruled with 11/32 inch line spacing for larger handwriting and easier reading and transcribing
- Perforated top for easy removal of the letter-size sheets from the pad
- Left-side margin and title space for organizing notes
- Product Dimensions: 8-1/2 x 11-3/4 inches (WxL, including binding)
Google Keep: fast lists and reminders
Dupple describes Google Keep as a simple choice for quick lists and reminders. It is the lightest option here, suited to shopping lists, short reminders, and one-line ideas. The tradeoff is that it is not designed for long-form notes or deep archives. Note that Google’s page redirected to a sign-in screen during checking, so confirm its current features on the official site.
Logseq: an open-source outliner
Dupple includes Logseq as an open-source outliner. Outlining suits people who think in nested points and want to build ideas bullet by bullet. The tradeoff is that an outline-first structure takes some adjustment if you prefer free-form pages.
Rank #4
- Composition book contains 100 double-sided sheets; A classic favorite for journaling and lab notes
- Wide ruling gives you plenty of writing space for notetaking
- Sewn binding is smooth, helps keep pages securely in place and lays flat when open
- Inside covers feature a class schedule, multiplication tables, conversion tables and grammar rules
- Pages measure 7.5" x 9.75"; Black Marble Soft Cover
Reflect, Mem, and Capacities: newer approaches to organizing ideas
Dupple uses these three tools to represent other approaches: AI-native daily notes, automatic organization, and object-based knowledge organization. They are for readers who want the app to shape or connect notes for them. The tradeoff is that automated organization makes it harder to see exactly how your notes are arranged, so test how you would find a note before committing.
Granola: an adjacent meeting-notes tool
Granola is a specialist meeting tool, not a general notebook. According to the September 2026 ClickUp comparison, it works from computer audio, rough notes you type during a call, and generated summaries. Choose it only if meetings are your main capture problem, and pair it with a general notebook for everything else.

Notion or OneNote: which is better for notes?
Neither is better in every case. Notion fits when notes need to be organized as a database, shared with a team, and filtered by properties. OneNote fits when you want a page-based notebook with a freeform canvas, and it is the more natural choice for handwriting-friendly, unstructured notes. If your main goal is a shared project wiki, start with Notion; if it is a personal notebook you fill as you go, start with OneNote.
Which note-taking app is best for free, and which work offline?
The sources do not establish current free-tier limits for most of these apps, and Dupple’s price snapshot is dated June 2026. ClickUp describes OneNote as a free notebook for Windows and Android users, but confirm the current limits on Microsoft’s own plan page before you rely on it. Offline use is also not stated for most apps in the reviewed sources. Obsidian’s local Markdown files are stored on your device by design, so they are the clearest case of a notes archive you control directly. For other apps, check each vendor’s help documentation to confirm how offline editing and sync work.
Check portability before you move your archive
File ownership and export are among the most important selection criteria in ClickUp’s 2026 framework. Before you migrate hundreds of notes, export a small batch of 10 to 20 notes from your current app, import them into the new one, and check that text, links, images, and attachments survived. Only move the full archive after that test passes. Keep the original export as a backup until you have confirmed the migration is complete.
Prices and plan limits
Plan prices and limits change often. ClickUp advises checking each vendor’s site for current prices, and Dupple labels its price snapshot as June 2026. Before choosing a paid plan, open the official pricing page for the app you are considering and confirm the current tier, storage, and collaboration limits.
Stylus and tablet accessories
If you plan to handwrite notes or annotate PDFs in Goodnotes or Apple Notes, a tablet stylus is the only accessory this topic requires. Apple Pencil is the stylus named in ClickUp’s comparison for Apple Notes. Confirm that a stylus you buy works with your specific tablet and app version before purchasing.
